  1. But isn't the reviewer supposed to check the satellite images and confirm that the location is legal and correct before publishing?
  2. A friend emailed a different reviewer and the cache was retracted. I wonder if there are other fake cache pages like it? If so, then nobody else seems to be posting about the topic, yet.
  3. I just got a new cache notification, but it's VERY fishy. The country of origin is wrong (Russia, not Canada), and the satellite images show it in an impossible location (the middle of a ferry terminal laneway intersection). Even the reviewer's name is new to me. I'm pretty certain that Groundspeak may have been hacked again, but I see no news of that in the forums. How do I report the cache as fake without clicking on it?
  4. It was great meeting you also! You all seemed to be having such a fun time at the Easter Egg hunt (I agree--the chocolate didn't hurt). We are glad that you came to visit cameracowgirl
  5. I downloaded the Mapsource maps and selected the section where I go caching the most (Southern Vancouver Island) and tried to send it to my GPS. Unfortunately, it won't send it because the map set is 8.47MB and my unit only has 7.98MB of available space (the manual says that the GPS can only take 8MB). It said to select fewer maps, but I'm only selecting one map. When I went to send the map to my GPS I also got a pop-up window saying to lower the "baud rate" if the transfer didn't work. It tried that, but it made no difference. Is there some box or drop-down list that I'm not ticking that's causing the map to have too much information on it? cameracowgirl
  6. I got some advice this afternoon on how to download from mapsource. I managed to get the mapsource map into the BaseCamp map but when I went to put it on the GPS the MapInstall said that it couldn't download the 494KB of information (the map for my local area) to my GPS, even though the GPS manual said that there is supposed to be 8MB of space on the unit. I was told on another site just now that due to it's unique interface cord, the eTrex Legend can only handle the purchased basecamp maps. Are you sure you had the exact same unit of GPS and that you put the free maps on it? cameracowgirl
  7. I have a 2005 Garmin eTrex Legend (the blue one with the weird RS-232 interface cable so it can't take GPX files). I already have the basic Garmin basecamp map on the GPS, but it only shows highways. I don't like printing off paper maps since it's bad for the environment, but I also don't like getting lost without a map. I would really like to add maps to my GPS but I don't believe that the overall cost of the GPS plus maps is worth what they are charging for them compared to a device that has maps already on it (Legend + maps= $225 vs Explorist GC with built-in maps and paperless caching = $150). At any rate, until I can afford to upgrade I was told that I can download open source maps or open street maps. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to get those maps from my computer onto my GPSr. Does anyone know how to get the maps onto my GPSr, or even if it's possible to do that with this particular model of GPS? cameracowgirl
  8. A-ha! I listed it as "not collectible" because I didn't want anyone else to collect it. That's why I couldn't put it in my own collection. The problem is now solved Thanks Gitchee-Gummee and Isonzo Karst! cameracowgirl
  9. I registered a new GC the other day and it is now my inventory, which is not where I want it. I simply wanted to have it registered for now but stay in my personal collection at home for the next year or two. Now that it's been placed in my inventory I've almost accidentally logged mileage on it twice and nearly logged it as dropped off once. I need to get it out of my inventory without dropping it off. I tried logging it as "missing," but I got the impression that if I were to go through with that then geocaching.com would permanently remove the GC's page, which means that I won't be able to put it into my inventory at a later date when I am ready to send it on it's journey. How do I move it out of my inventory without logging it as "dropped off" or "missing"? cameracowgirl
  10. LOL! Easy there, guys! When I posted my questions I didn't worry about spoilers for HAG8 because I figured that the statistical odds of knowing the cachers who read my post would be slim. What are the chances that 3 of you replying would be participating in HAG8? LOL! And that's not counting those who read the post and didn't reply. Sorry, The A-Team, Popokiiti, and The Incredibles, but I've said too much already. You'll just have to wait... cameracowgirl
  11. Thanks, everyone! That's good to know. A-Team--You'll have to wait for HAG8 before you can go find it. Mwuh-ha-ha! cameracowgirl
  12. I'm a part-time disabled cacher and I really appreciate disability-friendly caches. I'd like to give back to the caching community by hiding a driving night cache that is disability-friendly, but I've never hidden a night cache before. I read an article about how to hide night caches and it said to never hide a micro or nano for the final. Unfortunately, in order for my hide to be accessible, it needs to be on flat terrain and easy to reach (between knee and shoulder height, without bending the arm). I found the perfect place, but it limits me to using a nano. As long as I post that disabled cachers will need some dexterity (or a caching buddy with dexterity), is it OK to use a micro/nano for this type of night cache? Also, since night caches are considered puzzle caches, would there be a conflict if I were to have the starting co-ords within 161m of a traditional cache, or would there be a problem with that since you have to go to the start to do the cache? cameracowgirl
  13. Hahaha! This is turning out to be a lot easier than what I thought. In the end, not only did I not need to figure out what a "blackhorse code" was, but it also turns out that I don't need to use my GPS to find this cache. I had my suspicions of where the cache was located based on the clues in the name and the description, but since I didn't want to arouse the suspicions of muggles I thought that it might be a good idea to figure out the co-ordinates in case I was wrong. I finished calculating the blackhorse code and checking the co-ordinates on a map a few minutes ago. My suspicions have been confirmed. Coincidentally, I was planning to be across the street from this cache tomorrow for an unrelated reason, so I can just drop off the TB while I'm at it. Did I mention that this is turning out to be a lot easier than what I thought? Thanks for the help everyone! cameracowgirl
  14. Thanks for the suggestion, sshipway. I was not aware of that type of store code and it didn't come up in any of my googling or geocache research. Once I added the word "store" to my search criteria it came up right away. I should be able to solve the puzzle now Thank you very much! Sorry, popokiiti, but GC1B2Q3 has a terrain rating that might land me in the hospital. It does look fun, though cameracowgirl
  15. It all depends on the type of disability that someone has. I have found that it's more important to know your abilities and do your research before you go to the site. Just because a cache is listed as wheelchair accessible, does not mean that it's suitable for all persons with a disability. I have polymyositis, a rare illness that causes me to lose muscle with exercise. I tire easily, have weak muscles that cause balance problems, am prone to tripping, need to move slowly, and can't climb very well. I have learned that for my abilities I need to stick to a 1 1/2 terrain rating or less, and mostly the cache must to be within 100m of a parking spot. I can only spend less than 15 minutes searching, so if a cache has a difficulty rating of more than a 1, I either try to find out why, or else I make more than one attempt at finding the cache. I always bring a cel phone in case I fall and can't get up and sometimes I just need to bring along an able-bodied buddy to help. Helpful hint: When I am geocaching alone and need to use my hiking poles instead of my cane, I can't hold my GPS. One of the best things I ever did was to take 2 small hose clamps and use them to attach the vertical part of an "L" bracket to my hiking poles. Now I can temporarily mount my GPS on the horizontal part of the "L" bracket with a couple of strong elastic bands. This way I can use both poles for stability and still "hold" my GPS. cameracowgirl
  16. A few weeks ago I discovered geocaching for the disabled and now I'm hooked. Even though I'm still new at this, I love it! Unfortunately, I think I got in over my head today when I picked up a TB that wants to be placed in a puzzle cache. The only disability-friendly puzzle cache that I can find within 60km has a puzzle that is beyond my experience level. The puzzle requires me to figure out the co-ordinates using a code called "Blackhorse +3." I was hoping to find out what that code was through internet and geocache research, but so far I have gotten nowhere. Does anyone know what a "Blackhorse +3" code is, or can anyone link me to a website that will tell me what this code means? Thanks! cameracowgirl
