Implications of the current secuirity scare.

First thing I did when I saw the news about the police searching the woods was to fire up MemoryMap and see if there were any caches in the woods... There weren't... S -
How Much Have You Paid To Find A Cache?
slimey replied to housefamily's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
£60 & 3 points, or £75 and 2 hours for the speed awareness course. As Liz is a new driver, she's taken the speed awareness course, otherwise she's half way to losing her license (you're only allowed 6 points in the first 2 years after you pass your test now). It's disgusting that they make you pay so much for the course, and she's really not looking forward to it. All this just for 34mph in a 30mph limit... Simon -
As I see it, the problem exists where: - Event A is planned, and published. It's a daytime event. - Some people decide they want to camp either side of Event A, and publish Event B, which those people who camp 'attend' - Some more people decide they're going to go out to a pub in the evening, after event A, stick a cache in the carpark (to make it geocaching related), and publish Event C. In this situation, I fully agree that those should be merged into one event 'ABC' However, if: - person X decides to hold an event at a location, and publishes event A. The event has a theme making it more suitable for, say, mountain climbers. - person Y decides to also hold an event, about 1 mile from event A, and publishes event B. Being a kind and considerate cacher, they notice that event A is happening, and targets their event at kids and the 'less strenuous' walkers. In this situation, I can see that both events should be able to exist. S -

Just upgraded my TomTom ONE, and will have to wait see if the subtle UI changes will confuse my wife :-) I did notice on the old version, the tomtom would sometimes reboot when doing a traffic update - I wonder if that's fixed in this version. Thanks, S

I like having a full UK database because I import it into Memory map, and it means I can scroll around the country easily, and see where there's caches worth looking for. (Particularly if I'm being sent somewhere on business) Okay, the new google map function looks nice, but it still a little limited in what it will show on a map (limit ~15 caches per map?) S

Anyone got the dates for PQ 23 (and probably 24, 25, etc, by now...)? S

A Prodigal Returns, With A Request
slimey replied to enitharmon's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
Oooh, I'd not noticed that one - I think it must have got lost amongst all those Dewdrop micros. I'm not too far from Twyford, so I'm happy to be considered too, as a surrogate parent. Simon -
But how do you get all the caches into GSAK? Yes, you can setup a whole load of PQs to grab them, but if everyone does this, it adds considerable load to the gc.com database. Personally, I'd much prefer it if gc.com would allow us to grab a dump of all the UK caches - to load into GSAK, then import into tomtom/memorymap/whatever... S

Unauthorised Cache Found On Ben Nevis

And I thought I was the addicted one. I was telling my wife about this story just now, as I'd heard it on the Radio driving home from work - and *she* was the one who suggested that it might have been a cache. S -
Yeah - I've seen that before, but I was thinking more that some of the manhole covers look similar to many geocoins I see. Can't you say that about many coins these days? dadgum. Now, where's the nearest Geocoiners Anonymous meeting...

I was shown this URL today, and immediately thought of geocoins... http://frangipani.info/photography/v/manho...nholes_of_japan Perhaps someone could get some inspiration from one of them... Simon

Will it have a logbook attached? S

This could well be our next event... Getting into the swing of these events now! Confirm a bit nearer the time, but will probably camp if there's a group of people all camping at the same site... S

I noticed in the pack of paper spam that I got with a screwfix order this week that vistaprint.co.uk are offering a free rubber stamp to screwfix customers. You just have to pay for postage. There aren't many choices for the design, but I paid an extra 99p to extend the range of fonts, and just got a simple 3 line "Slimey found this cache on....." design for about £4 including postage (okay, I chose their cheapest postage option which says allow up to 21 days). http://www.vistaprint.co.uk/screwfix2006 S

Placing New Cache - Help Needed Please.
slimey replied to bhodisatva's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
If you want the micro to be seperately loggable, then just create it as a regular cache. Then, in the description for your multi say that you have to have found the other cache first in order to decode the clues. I don't see a problem with that, and I've seen other caches that do something similar. S -
I've just booked my camping spot for Saturday night, and they didn't suggest that they were getting full, so it sounds like there's still plenty of room if you still want to camp. The weather forecast is looking okay for tomorrow... S

Congratulations To Dodgydaved!
slimey replied to The White Family's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
So there I was this evening, driving home from work, close to my cache, and I pass a short bearded chap, accompanied by two teenage lads, one of whom was holding an A4 sheet of paper. I thought to myself 'they just *have* to be caching!". Not only were they cachers, but it was our very own dodgydaved (as revealed by the log entry just now). I'd missed this thread, but thought that perhaps my cache might have been the 500th - but this was not the case - I was a week and a bit too late. Oh well - thanks for finding my cache as your 502nd, congrats on your 500th, and well done on introducing some new lads to the hobby. S -
This website might help: http://www.ramblers.org.uk/INFO/publicatio...ountryside.html According to that website, if it really is a byway, you have a right to take a dog with you. Simon

We did the Cryptik clean up (Reading CITO event) - GCTFC0 - yesterday. A fantastic effort by all involved (and probably one of the best attended events in the UK). Several people commented that we probably found enough bits to make an entire car. S

2006 Shrops Cache Event - In Search Of The Grail
slimey replied to Team Maddie UK's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
Just added myself to the event page, but will add myself here too. This looks like it'll be a fab event. 1 tent, 2 adults, 2 kids (4yo & 2yo). Not sure exactly which days, but most likely only the weekend. Thanks! S -
If you add a PQ for today, you should receive it within about 30 minutes (depending on how loaded the servers are, I suspect). Simon
-
Sorry, what does this have to do with caching? S
-
Okay, having been insipired by the wonder atmosphere, and wonderful weather for the Reading CITO event yesterday, we thought me might try to come along to this one and bring the tent. I'll try to call the park on Monday to book a space, but does anyone know if there are still spaces available at the campsite? What facilities are there at the campsite? My son (4) is really keen on the idea, and wants to help organise the trip, so here's a message from him: i like campmeeng
