  1. Mineral12, I tried basically this after I got home before I saw this, but did not remove poi. It worked, so there was a corrupted file but I still am not sure why downloading a fresh query, causing it to recompute the internal files didn't clear it up. Thanks. While the problem existed however, my wife and I used our phones for a few days and probably will keep doing that. The ease of use is simply too big of an advantage. I will probably reserve the gps for hiking, camping or deep woods geocaching where battery life becomes a large factor.
  2. Never used a Mac, only windows 10 devices. Will look for any extraneous gpx files when back from coffee shop. Never intentionally loaded as POIs but will look for that also. Thanks for something else to check.
  3. Logging complete, cleared out ggz and sql folders, disconnected unit, turned on, no geocaches. Downloaded latest GSAK, did query, put in GSAK. Checked data base, caches just logged not there. Downloaded to 64s. Depressed find, data base looked fine, logged caches not there. BUT, they were still on map. So, problem is not filter but geocache data not being updated on map. So, marking as found, no impact on map. Load New data into GPS, no impact on map. Location triangle on map OK, map orient OK, just no geocache data update on map. Last resort hard reset, but only after we get home next weekend when I have my faithfull (working properly) 62s in hand. Any other suggestion welcomed.
  4. 1. just started using 64, so no. before that used 60 then 62. 2. Yes, and they properly operate on the list displayed when find is depressed, just not on map. 3. Agree. I will update to latest gsak just as a precaution. 4. Database reset was next step after waiting for answers, master reset if that doesn't work. It seems it may be more of a map page problem. Often I will select a geocaches from map display and select go to navigate to it. It appears to be navigating (compass working and if you hit find says it is navigating to the selected cache, but if you go to the geocaches page brings up list instead of data on the one being navigated to.
  5. No, we found a number of geocaches in town. All marked as found did not show up in list when find-geocaches were depressed, but still showed up on map as unfound (closed chests). On chat with Garmin last night their response was "it might accidently work when downloading caches to device from gsak but should use Garmin Express". I will try this but from the symptons this seems like pure BS. If the filter removes them from displayed find list they should not appear on map. I went to map, depressed menu-geocache filter. The filter name was displayed. Highlighted it. There was no option to apply it so hit enter. No affect.
  6. When I set up the geocaches filter I can choose to show or not show found geocaches. When set to show (green check) they show up in list when find is depressed as open (found) geocaches. When set to not show they Don't show up in list. In both cases they are shown on the map as closed (unfound) geocaches. I Don't understand why filter is not applied to map. This is a major problem for me as I use the map much more than the list. Any help appreciated.
  7. When we say useless logs, we mean something like, "Yes,It is right there." or "no hint needed" or "there are two ways in". We realize that sometimes there are hints that are meaningful to the cachers in a particular area because they know the cacher who placed the hide OR the type of hide certain people place. Those, we have no problem with. Something like nano as the hint when the size designation should already tell one that information is another example.
  8. Useless hints should not be given. No hint is acceptable if the CO so desires. Some people do still decode by hand, especially new cachers and this very thing might discourage their future as cachers. When we first started, we used paper and decoded by hand because we did not know if we were going to be interested in putting in the money for this strange hobby. We did learn and invested in better equipment but when we need a hint and look and find something useless, it angers and disappoints us. It seems that one thing the reviewers might do would be to notify COs to eliminate useless hints. I heard someone say that they submitted a cache and the reviewer would not publish it until the hint was useful or eliminated.
  9. It seems that perhaps Wintertime's response is the most likely answer. Unfortunately, how do we deal with the situation? It was interesting (and reassuring) that at least one other person has had the problem (so I know it is not my "magnetic" personality!!! Thanks for all responses. I hope that there is a solution forthcoming from somewhere too.
  10. As I said, the first incident was my daughter's GPS. We have nothing in common with the electronics. She used her computer, her GPS, etc. We just happened to be together to cache. Today, our GPS had been loaded from a query on our computer. (We do not live together so as I said, no electronics were used which belonged to the other party.)
  11. This is really weird. On Saturday, (10/08/11) I was caching with my daughter, greykitties. While we were in MD, we attempted to go to CJS - Chapel Point State Park, GC2F43F. Three times while attempting to look at this cache information, her GPS (Oregon 500T) locked up. She had to remove batteries in order to get it working again. After the third attempt, she stopped trying to use it for that cache. Others would come up and behave normally. I tried to use my Droid to see if that would work and the description (text part) showed up on the phone in red (almost impossible to read in sunlight.) TODAY, (10/11/11) on Tuesday, my husband and I were down the Northern Neck of VA and we were looking at GC2F41Y CacheCJS - Historic Urbanna. Suddenly, the GPS locked up (We have a Garmin 62S). The screen went blank, it could not be turned off so he had to remove the batteries and replace them. When he turned the GPS back on, he went to that cache again and the screen went blank and the description would not come up. After again removing batteries, we checked on other nearby caches and they all behaved normally. I then again tried my Droid and again, the DESCRIPTION part of the information showed up in red print while descriptions of other caches appear in white print. Being CJS caches (and me being present) it seems that this is the only common denominator. Any observations, suggestions, or comments?
  12. Help needed in Germaany. I will be in Colonge on Monday, August 15. I know it is short notice but my GPS has lost my information and I amm not finding any caches. I reaally want to fidnd some while I am on a river cruise. I have itermitent web service but if someone sees this and could help I would appreciate it. I am on The River Harmony.
  13. This was a fun topic and Thanks to all who posted. I've enjoyed it and so much of the "stories" ring true.
  14. Like Doctor A, full disclosure, I am the Mother of one greykitty and Doctor A. I also have been slightly involved in the trail which is currently the object of discussion. A bit of history- The land was purchased by an individual who saw possibilities of a rail to trail development. As mentioned earlier, the county supervisors declined to participate and have a "public" trail. The owner and others in the community have spent many, many hours working on this trail to make it accessible for anyone who wishes to use it. There are some neighbors who did now want a trail in their backyards even though the rail property has been in existance since the Second World War. There is a fairly large group of people who support the trail and work to have various activities occur in connection with the trail. The BOD of the DRHT asked me about two years ago to hold an event which would be publicized to the members of the group so that geocaching could be introduced to the (loosely knit group of) "members." They saw it as another use for this resource in the community. I re-state, I believe that the owner of the land is attempting to Cover (CYA) and protect himself from a legal standpoint by granting the permits. There is no charge for them and the BOD suggests the SASE so there is not a cost to the owner who issues the permits. It is unfortunate that this permit is being looked at as "invasion of privacy". I agree with the posters who have mentioned that there are places which charge fees to enter. There are places which obtain information as you enter which equates to the same thing as is asked for with the permit. Knowing the trail, I, personally, can "do" this trail and there are many places which I cannot "do". I am not wheelchair but I do have some physical limitations which mean there are caches I cannot do (Mr vaetanone has to do some of them alone.) "We" have placed caches which I could not seek out but I did help place some of the caches which have been grandfathered on the trail. We have only had positive comments from those people who have hunted the caches and many have returned to bike or hike at a later date. It does seem that a reasonable accommodation might be made in this case. From the first, those of us who have placed caches have indicated that a permit should be obtained but I doubt if everyone has done so.
  15. There are other requirements for some caches, such as needing to use a credit card to rent a boat for a water cache, etc. where one submits some information to a third party. In addition, in the case of needing a permit for this trail, I feel that the owner is CYA since there was an attempt to have the trail taken over by the county and the county refused to do so (for many reasons) but the owner is encouraging people to use the trail for various activities such as biking, hiking, horseback riding, etc.
  16. In this case the GPS led me on a roughly 200 ft bushwhack lasting several Min, roughly same time back. I have no idea which "excursion" was correct, since I didn't find the cache. The track on the map page showed an egg shaped loop a couple of hundred feet wide even though my path out and back varied less than 10 feet. I am not claiming it was caused by WAAS, only that both times I have seen this I was under cover with WAAS on. In the last instance it started showing the cache roughly 50 feet from where I left the trail, and very slowly decreased (at a much lower rate than my position was changing) until I was over 200 ft from trail. It then changed and pointed back to where I left the trail. If it was repeatable I could walk a trail and use Google Earth to see what is happening, but it has occured twice in roughly 100 cache searches.
  17. I too have had two instances under heavy cover where my Garmin 62s guided me over 100 ft in one direction then back with WAAS on. After the second instance I wondered if WAAS was a factor. Next time I will turn it off and see what happens. I have not had this occur before starting to use WAAS recently nor in the clear.
  18. ecanderson, no I didn't do a safe removal. Wish I had read your question before I updated wife's to 2.6. Had to remove battery followed by hard reset this time. When I get a chance I will update mine to 2.6 and try the safe remove to see if that helps.
  19. Just did a webupdater update for my Garmin 62s from Ver 2.4 to Ver 2.5. Everything appeared normal until the process completed. Unplugged unit from computer. Normally here it turns off. Then heart palpitations started. Unit hung at the startup page where Garmin is displayed with small blue triangle over n. Waited as palpitations continued, waited longer. Tried to turn off using on/off button. Nothing. More palpitations, started searching for manual update procedure. Finally removed battery, cursed thing finally went off. Re-inserted battery, normal startup, shows correct Version, loaded caches, all appears normal. Palpitations calmed down. Anybody else seen this?

  21. I was not allergic to PI and did not (could not) remember just what it looked like UNTIL about 4 years ago when I was learning to ride a bike (at 65 yrs of age). I crossed a bridge, hit a BIG bump and went off the trail, down an embankment and landed upside down in bramble roses, headed towards a river. After husband rescued me, he went back down the bank to retrieve equipment and had to pull himself up with handholds and he is pretty athletic. Oh, the PI. A few days later, when a friend asked about the rash on my legs and it kept getting worse, I went to the Dr. who told me it was PI. We realized that being scratched by the roses allowed the oil to get into my system and cause the rash. Since that time, I am allergic to PI and DO break out when I come into contact with it. NOW, I definitely know what it looks like both when it is green and leafy AND even the bare vines which one sees particularly in the winter. FYI those who do not know, the vines look ropy and HAIRY. The old saying of "Leaves of three, turn and flee, leaves of five, allow to thrive" is a good one to remember! It is nice that there are actually parts of the country which do not have PI (or ticks), of course those probably have rattlers or scorpions!
  22. OK, simple question , I hope. I downloaded into Mapsource a track of a bike trail in a local park with 722 points. I filtered it to 500, and it loads to the 60Csx fine, left at 722 it is Truncated in the 60Csx transfer. How do I make it an "Active Track" so it has the 10,000 point limit on 60 Csx download?
  23. Wow, this hobby of ours does generate discussion and suggestions! Personally, I agree with several of those who have posted, Doctor A, Bush and Boots and Purple Haze especially. I understand that the reviewers can and do let us know when we want to place a cache too close to an existing waypoint but especially when one lives in a rural area (not in Ca by the way) placing caches can involve a fair amount of driving and at the prices of gas these days.... It definitely is a consideration. In addition, some of us are not as technically able as others and don't have all of the toys for being able to get online while in the field. We have cached with someoe who is able to look up caches while out there, make phone calls (when towers are available), send emails, etc. It is great when that can all be done but for various reasons, we can't all do those things. To me, puzzles are more of a problem than the multi caches even though those also can present problems especially if they have numerous point. ie. a multi in our area has five stops but each one has two possible locations so that eliminates quite a lot of possible cache locations in that town. The other example is that a puzzle is within 1.5 miles of our home. I THINK I know about where it is but I haven't been able to solve the puzzle so I avoid that whole general area. It would be nice if we could check those locations without having to "bother" the reviewer. I really appreciate the work the volunteer reviewers do and it seems that if they have to respond to many queries as to possible locations for new caches that after a while it could become onerous. Sorry to be so long winded but figures I'd put in my two cents worth. By the way we live in VA.
  24. We have a problem with Route Pocket Queries we haven't seen before. We generated a query which when run gives a Server Error - Queue Empty error. When we click on it after that in our query list hoping to bring it up and delete it we get the error immediately, so can't delete it. Anybody have any suggestions either on the problem or how to delete the query from our list?
