  1. i seem to reamember some forum posts not so long ago that say the exact opposite to this but hey what do i know You sound bitter...why? I'm just very thankful that Deceangi is willing to take on the job - and only want to wish him all the best. VB
  2. 7. MJBVBJJB 256 Edit: oops - can't count
  3. My favourite is a series - the Universally Challenged Nos 1 - 10 (GCNA6W)! It was a great walk (or 3, in our case) but nicely done and had enough to keep the youngest member of our party on the move. I don't know how to do a link though, sorry!
  4. I don't know what classes as a newbie, but have less than 80 caches under my belt and even less posts on here. Anyway, in answer to your question, although I will continue caching, the ruckus on here of the last few weeks on here has certainly put me off attending a caching event, for now at least.
  5. I have a tendency to put a fair bit on my logs...this is partly because we cache with our 3 year old and I have a (soppy) hope that some day when he can read and write for himself...and maybe even enjoys going caching by himself ....he can look back at what he did when he was a littl'un and his parents and grandparents dragged him out in all weather (and moods) on a treasure hunt! I have no idea whether the cache setters enjoy what we put, or whether it's just a case of "oh, here she goes again....." Our logs in the books tend to be short, though. Mainly because the same little person, not to mention the other big person in our team, are not known for their patience! HTH V
  6. you're not kidding....many a night i was kept awake as a teen by possums fighting in the roof space above my bed - horrible noise. It's a sport over there.... combining cars and possums! (or it was among some people....... ) you know - all that time over there i didn't know that bats and seals were native. I saw many seals but can't remember seeing bats...got all excited at seeing them when I moved here tho! Anyway - back on topic...where's that armchair caching list, I take it I can do them both naked and nude? Edited to add: curiosity got the better of me...apparently the only indigenous mammals are bats, seals were imported .....or so my old friend google told me.
  7. KiwiGary has got around this by being a marsupial but........ isn't NZ a country with no native mammals....and don't the marsupials come from Australia! As a fellow kiwi I spent a lot of time pointing out to the not-so-little people I taught after I moved out here (geographers at that) that calling me an aussie is the geographical/mileage equivalent of calling a Brit a German (although I haven't worked out the exact mileage)! But then again I may have misinterpreted your comment....if so.................... But - back on topic......... naked caching is great stuff! A real feeling of achievement is got from a good naked-cache find. Our first find was a naked cache find and made me feel it might be worthwhile nagging MJB until he bought me a proper GPSr for my birthday (he didn't....but that is another story). Having caches which can be done naked (as opposed to nude) is great as it enables people to test the sport! TFTC V
  8. Hi careygang I guess I didn't respond to your original post when I added my bit...sorry. I tend to think that people should be able to play the game how they like. I suppose I feel that we all play this game in our own little ways - some go for numbers, some like the walk and the introduction to an area they didn't know so well, some want the ftf, some like to meet others......and on and on. So - if the cache owner doesn't mind how the virtuals were logged then I feel that it isn't for me to mind - at least the logger has put some effort into it and not just logged randomly. I think, if I remembered rightly, your original post addressed someone who had just got 200 caches. Nowadays, if you look at the numbers that isn't too many and hopefully shouldn't really corrupt any statistics. Hope that makes some sort of sense?! VB
  9. this is a great thread for me to put a query about something that I've been thinking about for a while! In looking at my old stomping ground of NZ I found a virtual cache there that I have visited umpteen times! There is a photo of me there with my brother and sister when I was about 7 years old and more photos I took when we visited about 7 years ago. A friend of ours also lives within stone throwing distance! But, of course all this was before I knew about geocaching. On the page for this cache I don't need to find some info and send it to the placer (not even a photo), just have been there..... so, do you think that the fact that I have been there AND have proof of it, means that I can log it as a find? (I am so hoping that the general consensus is yes!) VB
  10. Hey.......... one man's tat is a wee child's absolute treasure!!!!!!! Please don't forget that the littl'uns often really like McD toys (as long as they are in good condition). Who are the swaps really for? Do adults really take them or is it mainly kids? Most adult only logs I've seen are "TNLN" logs. I've not put a McD toy in a cache but our son, who always caches with us, adores the ones he has found. V
  11. metric for me!!! But - then I was brought up in NZ which is totally metric. Miles confused me when I first got here as it seemed to take ages to get anyway - I'm used to it now (after 15 years) and when I drive the distances are in miles (because of the road signs), but I do most else in metric, including my GPSr (except I have no idea of my metric weight, just in imperial) V
  12. My favourite way is to use Google Earth to show where all the caches are - it's great for planning as it shows where all the caches are and you can link to the sheets from Google Earth and print off as needed! HTH V
  13. Is there some etiquette about types of knights? I've dropped a couple of knights I found at home in caches lately Not for my wee lad - to him a knight is wonderful, no matter what sort! I might just have to find where you have been recently to take him on a hunt, as you're not all that far from us! I'll keep you posted!
  14. Ohhh oohh oohh I do hope this is near us ...... I know of a certain little boy who would be absolutely over the moon and all the way up to the stars to find one of these in a cache!!!!!

  16. On the odd cache I have done on my own I'm not interested in the swaps - it's the walk, exploring a new area and the thrill of the hunt. But - I usually cache with my 3 (nearly 4) year old and we would never get him to come out with us if it were not for the lure of "treasure". He is always dissapointed if there is nothing for children, so we try not to do micros and if there is nothing obvious for him in the cache I try and sneak one of our swaps in for him to take. It's always hard to get him to join us if we have had a run of caches which are poorly stocked for children. It's always great to see him keen and eager when he finds a good swap - a ninja turtle we found is still a well played with toy, a dalmation still joins him in bed, cars/trucks/fire engines are very very popular with him. So, our swaps are for the little-cachers. I'm willing to bet that most adult cachers aren't there for the contents, but the fun so I don't cater for adults, unless I've been caught without my cacher's bag and then the cache gets what I have on me! HTH V
  17. I'm just wondering if there is an unwritten rule about logging a cache for when you know someone has found a cache before you that day but hasn't logged it yet? Should I wait until they've logged it before I add my bit....or doesn't it matter? Just wondering thanks V
  18. You can get ALL geocahes for the Tom Tom from 'Geocacheuk.com' File download page. But then I expect you know this. it's probably really obvious, but I've been hunting and can't find the download page! I'd love to get the geocaches on my TomTom! Please.... where can i find it?
  19. How about also setting up a Travel Bug (or two) in their names so they can track them. Google earth can give them a great visual as to where the TBs have moved. V
  20. JJB is 3, VB is thimumble mumble mumble and MJB is very close to 42. Can we do a composite age as that would make us pretty old?
  21. ohhhhh - I'm too curious for words......what is it? tell us please pretty please
  22. Hi We were in Cyprus a couple of weeks ago, but were south so it was quite easy to find them. The best thing I can suggest is to look for them on Google Earth. If you go onto your account page and scroll down there is a bit on the bottom right (ish) which says "download Geocache browser in Google Earth". (obvously you need to have google earth already, but I can't remember how to get that, sorry) Anyway, having got the Google Earth browser, when you zoom in it shows the caches. When I did this for Cyprus it's clear that there are not many caches in the northern part. Try "stuck between a rock and a hard place" GCRYP8. hope that helps V
