  1. Just to let you folks who have Mapsource software from Garmin the 4.09 is available for download. I don't think it is a very impressive upgrade but it's free if you own it. Thanks Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. Via French from Latin lassitudo , from lassus 'weary'.]
  2. Just got back from a driving holiday round Europe and had an absolute nightmare in Denmark. The first cache was after a rainstorm at the end of a runway so every time a plane took off large water droplets fell from the leaves drenching me. Then the monsterous mosquitoes dined on me and that left me looking like a leper the next morning. The following morning I did a cache which I failed to find, lost my GPS pouch and got torn to shreds by brambles thrashing through undergrowth, got stung so bad by nettles that my legs were still burning the following morning (along with the itching of th inflamed Mosquito bites). I don't know why but I seem to ignore pain when I am trying to find a cache and only realise what I have done afterwards. I know pack a pair of leggings and mosquito repellant (Deet based stuff is best! It kills 'em if they come near you!). 4. 1- Read the cache description on Geocaching.com. Quite often it will give you pointers as to the location of the cache. 2- After you have completed a few caches you will get an idea of where they are likely to be hidden. Think about what plants or what cover is likely to be there all year round (I suppose this applies to rural areas). 3- What website are these caches on? The co-ordinates on Geocaching.com are in WGS84 Format which is N (or)S xx° xx.xxx W (or)E xxx° xx.xxx. I have made the mistake once putting in a waypoint on my GPSr when the format on the GPSr was wrong. This gave me a location about .75 of a mile out. I guess that is what you did. Set up your GPSr to accept the correct waypoint format before entering the waypoint. You will have to refer to your manual for this as I own a Garmin so cannot help. 4- The version of the GPS firmware (2.02) should not make a difference. Updated versions usually fix bugs. It is unlikely that a bug would cause such a large error. 5- I find that the older I get the less likely I am to read the manual ;-). If you are capable of placing a note in a forum I am sure you can figure it out. In summary- Print out the Cache page and take it with you, make sure your GPS is set up for the correct wapoint format and try again. Good Luck Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. Via French from Latin lassitudo , from lassus 'weary'.]
  5. MossTrooper I don't have any objections to people informing me of caches they have placed in the forums. I do see that it could get out of hand if everybody posted a thread about every cache they have placed though. So: Why not have a couple of threads: 1- Cache information/querys- A thread where people can post quesions such as the one I asked you regarding caches near Newcastle. 2- Blatent plug- A thread where you can inform people of your cache. The only restriction in this thread would be not replies except by Email and only one message for each cache. Then you could enforce things more strictly in the rest of the forum and if it is possible move meassges with plugs to the correct thread. Ok, I'll stop waffling now... 6. Long time since I have been to York. Would probably make it a long Weekend as we live in Reading. A provisional 'yes please' based on dates/times etc. Thanks Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. 7. Press and hold the enter key when powering on. Not sure what use it is though (Unless you are a Garmin Engineer). Cheers Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. Via French from Latin lassitudo , from lassus 'weary'.]

  9. I have located the following area for a a waypoint N52 37.488 E5 09.613 It is near to Hoorn which is reasonably close to Amsterdam. If any body in the Netherlands can help I would appreciate it. Thanks Chris Franklin LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. Via French from Latin lassitudo , from lassus 'weary'.]
  10. To any cachers in the Amsterdam area. There is a Cache on Geocaching.com that I need help solving my waypoint for this cache is: N52 37.488 E5 09.613 The lattitude of the waypoint was made from my user name and the letter to number conversion provided by telephone keys (please look at the cache page for details): http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=12627 The Longitude I have chosen. I could have chosen one in the UK but that would have been boring. The virtual cache instructions require another cacher to go to the location and take a photo of their GPS reading the Lat/Long I have provided and some photos of the area. The cacher who does this will also score this cache. Please mail me the photos and details at chris@franklin.fsbusiness.co.uk Please email the photos to me. The waypoint is near to Wijednes which is close to Hoorn which is quite near Amsterdam. If a Dutch cacher can help with this we will both score a cache!!! Thanks Chris Franklin LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. Via French from Latin lassitudo , from lassus 'weary'.]
  11. Good luck in your walk and I hope the weather is kind to you. If any of you want to know what Wally has been up to check out his website: http://www.Lehigh.EDU/~wwt1/walking.html If there a cacher who is near to a cache which is on his route why not put something in it adressed for his attention??? Cheers Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. Via French from Latin lassitudo , from lassus 'weary'.]
  12. One thing I will say is that if you do not intend to keep a gift you take from a cache why take it? If you see that a cache is poorly stocked why not leave a couple of things and not take anything? If you note this on the cache page you will probably find the next visitors do the same and soon the cache will be better stocked! Thanks Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. Via French from Latin lassitudo , from lassus 'weary'.]
  13. Got 16 1800mAh rechargeables and my charger is coming with me so I should be OK. Thanks for the advice about the tunnel. Sounds like a nightmare. I had looked at 'Angel of the North' Geocache to do. Quite like to take a look at the angel as it is supposed to be quite impressive. Thanks for the help Chris Franklin LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. 15. Just been fiddling about with my Mypop profile. I cannot see how to set up the SMS bit and the other profile entires do not seem to work. Could anybody help me with setting this up (I read the Help page but that does not tell me what to do) Sorry to post twice in a row but the SMS thing would be really handy. 16. On June 7th we depart from Newcastle to Bergen in Norway. I intend to visit some caches on the way up to Newcastle from Reading. I want caches that will not involve long walks as we will be short of time so I was wondering if any of you 'up north' could suggest some caches we could do on the way up that are close to the A1M which is the road we will follow most of the way. As a footnote if any of you guys and gals up there want a bug to go to Norway / Sweden / Denmark / Germany / Austria I am sure we could arrange to visit a cache where you have placed the bug on the way up. We will set out at 9AM from Reading and will need to catch the ferry at 19:00. I recon 2 or perhaps 3 caches on the way up. If I get some good suggestions I will let you know which ones I will try for and you can place bugs and let me know. There are about 3 or 4 caches in Bergen but not many more in Norway. Sweden is full of them. Denmark has a few, Germany has plenty. I alreadt have Pooh Bare who is going North when I drop him in Sweden. 17. I have completed the caches you have mentioned and can only say Cluedo, the SPs and Cranbourne in one day. I bet you were cranky by the end of it! I think my recors is the SP caches which would be 7 because SP7 is now dead. I bet you stayed late logging all of those!! I suppose if I got up at a reasonable time at the weekends I would stand a fighting chance of beating that stat. But not now as I have cleared all the local caches... 19. It rounded off a great days caching in the Avebury area. I think if you are going to place a virtual cache then make sure there are some normal caches in the same area. That way they will be visited to 'tick them off' Thanks Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. 23. I am now the proud owner of 16 Maplins 1800 mHa batteries for my eMAp. They last for a real long time. Not as long as Duracell M3 batteries but close and I can recharge them!! Very happy- and I will soon make my money back. Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. 24. I purchased my eMap with 16MB and Mapsource Europe Metroguide. I am happy with it as far as getting to caches is concerned but because it is not TOPO (Topographical-has footpaths and hight refernce) when you get close it is of little use. Garmin are supposed to be producing a TOPO version for the UK in the next year or so. They are currenty in negociation with O.S. for the Map data. 25. They are not difficult and you can score six in one day! Whats more there is a nice walk around a forest as well. If you want to travel 'Room 101' and 'Combe and find me' have exceptional veiws if you don't mind hills. I won't mention mine though....
