  1. I have been mucking about with a theme creator for my IPAQ and have created a theme based on a cache photo. I am thinking of doing a series of them if there are enough IPAQ users interested.

For those of you with IPAQs and interested in wasting storage space to give yourself a pretty Geocaching background please let me know and I will create a few more and add proper links to my website.

I am not sure about compatability but I guess if you are using PocketPC 2002 they/it will work. Not sure about any others though.

Download it from here: Geocaching IPAQ Theme

Just copy it to the Windows Directory on your PDA and select it from the Today Icon in your settings. It is resonably OK for a first effort and I am sure they can only improve.

    Thanks

    Chris

  2. Well I maintain a Garmin MPS file and an EasyGPS file on my website that contains all the caches I have completed. You can download them and see just how many I have actually done!!

That is not only sad but egotistical as well ( I thought I would get that in before anybody else does).

  3. A few clarifications here:

1- If we can camp over our we near our cars (As I have loaned a lot of my gas powered camping equipment to my sister in law and only have 12v stuff. No worries if we cannot just need to know.

2- How many are camping over? Is the campsite oversubscribed?

3- Is there a timetable of events anywhere?

4- What facilities are there? Loos and or showers etc....

5- Are all of the caches within walking distance of the site?

6- Are there restrictions on the site such as 'no naked flames?', No water pistols etc icon_wink.gif ??

Sorry to bombard you with questions but I like to be prepared. If there is a site which has all these answers then just give me the URL and I will be happy to stop pestering...

On another note I have completed 'Hidden Treasure III' Geocaching photo screensaver and will be bringing about 20 CDs with me. First come first served.

    Thanks

  4. Quote from Team paradise (I wish I knew how to do the quote thingy!):

    ______________________________________________

If I saw Lassitude in a dark wood and didn't know him, I'd probably soil my underwear!

    ______________________________________________

I spend a week in Portugal- (Incidently there are some cracking caches there), return and catch up of the forum and what do I find?

Suggestions that my appearance in the woods after dark may cause loss of bowel control.

Well I do not know what to say! - Actually I do-Steve I am not sure how I would feel about you creeping up with a fag hanging out of your gob and an Otterbox in the other icon_wink.gif .

Anyway I will arrive on Saturday Morning with a tent and a hangover thanks to Reading's Real Ale and Jazz on Friday Evening. I suspect 11AM is realistic although I am not sure icon_wink.gif . I will be more than happy to help.

Are we going to have enough space for all these Geocachers?

    Thanks

  5. A few things I consider with Travel Bugs:

    - Only release them in caches that have frequent visitors.

    - When you are moving somebody elses TB try to put it in a cache that is frequently visited, has not been trashed/destroyed recently.

    - Make the goal of the TB easy enough so that people are not put off from moving it.

    - Make sure the Goal ot the TB is on a waterproof tag attached to the TB.

    - Attach the tag to the TB securely so there is no chance the tag and the TB and goal tag are separated.

    - Give a team a months grace before enquiring when they intend to move it on. I actually had a Norweigen Geocacher return a TB to me by post because he had been too busy to place it for 3 months.

    - Check to see the logs are correctly made by teams finding and moving it on. I had a team in Sweeden who due to language and inexperience made a real mess of the logs, getting the dates mixed up and only after a number of emails got it cleared up.

    - Send Emails to Teams who pick up the bug thanking them for doing it. It makes a lot of difference to a team if they know the owner of the TB is interested in its movements. I have exchanged Emails with a good number of American, Canadian, sweedish, Dutch and New Zealand Teams who have provided photos and other interesting information.

I have 4 TBs on the go and none have been lost yet..

It does not matter where you place your bug intitially. I usually take a primed TB with me and will only place it in a cache I feel happy with leaving it at.

They are great fun. I have one that had done a lot of traveling. Started in the UK, went to NZ, then to Canada and now is in the US. (Lassitudes Legionnaire).

  6. Lassitudes Legionnaire (One of mine) has clocked up 23153 Miles and has been to NZ, Cananda and is currently in the USA. It will possibly appear in Oregon next (According to the person who has it).

  7. I only suffer from very mild hayfever. I may get a bit sniffy or sneeze a couple of times passing an oilseed rape field.

However this was a topic of dicussion at work today and apparently the sister of my boss cannot take anti-histermine pills. She visited a health food shop and they suggested applying a thin layer of vasaline up her nose. Sounds painful and dubious to me but I can understand how it may work.

  9. Not very good news. It is worth all of us keeping our eyes open for stuff like this. If you had not read that bit of news and sombody had got hurt.....

Hows about hiding the cache somewhere in the park that would not require poking about in undergrowth and stating that fact in the cache clue?....Perhaps make it a micro and hide it in a tree or under a bridge (Somewhere where traps would be placed)?

    quote:
Not quite as bad as a trap but recently found a small bag which I thought was the cache and when I squeezed it I found it was full of Doggy Doo.

    - Why oh why do people do this? instead of just leaving the dog poo to decompose they seal it in a plastic bag and chuck it under a bush(Instead of disposing of it properly). Stupid.

My wife and I have been in stitches wondering what you look like!!!

I tried to take a pic but the my digital camera refused to take the picture. Probably a good thing. The world is not ready for my big pink frilly tutu. icon_eek.gif

  11. In my (Long Winded) opinion:

In the fist example you provide where you have 4 caches that can be solved and scored separately. Each provides a clue to get to the multi in question then each cache should have a terrain rating based on its own terrain. Likewise the final (Multi) cache should have a terrain rating based on its own terrain. I say this because the inividual parts can be scored as a cache anyway. The terrian score of a cache is most useful to people who are suffer mobility problems, have pushchairs/wheelchairs in their party. Each individual cache should mention in the Multi cache clue any increased difficulty for the final multi.

If (As in the second example) you choose to make them all one cache then mark the difficulty to reflect the most difficult cache in the series. Again you want the terrain to indicate how difficult the worst part of the terrain is to save disappointment. If you add all the difficulties together you may end up with a number greater than 5! So for example if location 2 of your Multi was the most difficult terrain wise and is terrain 3 then make the Multi terrain 3.

As far as Travers comment about people avoiding Multis that is partially true. You tend to find Teams who travle to an area will cherry pick quicker caches and will attempt the multi if they get time. Most of the finds on Multi's tend to be from people who are relatively local to it.

    Thanks

  12. quote:
It should provide information to Geocachers on areas that have been given the green light and any exceptional rules for cache placement in those areas e.g. The forestry Commision have allowed cache placement on their land as long as it is within 20 metres of a track.

Sorry to get your hopes up but this was a hypothetical example to illustrate the sort of information that could be provided by the 'Association'. Should have chosen an example less credible icon_wink.gif . e.g. You can only place caches on Forestry Commission land if you are wearing a pink tu-tu. Now lets see if anybody quotes that one out of context icon_wink.gif

  13. - should it represent UK, GB, England, Wales etc?

It should represent England, Scotland, Wales and possibly Northern Ireland as long as there is general consent from the teams living in these countries. I think the term UK and GB my not be appropriate (particularly with Scotland and Wales having their own devolved governments making different laws).

    - how many people would be needed to run it?

As few as possible. A point of contact/representative for each county or cluster of counties may be a good idea to enable easy communication between landowners and a local relevent person.

    - should it pro-actively be promoting geocaching?

I did not agree with actively seeking publicity at first but think it has helped the hobby recently. I bet there are good number of people on this forum who read/saw/heard about Geocaching from various radio and TV articles about it.

However I do think this will have to be carefully handled. You can have too much of a good thing. The HCC barbeque weekend is a good example of how publicity should work if all the plans and arrangements work out.

Publicity can also be used by the association to promote the hobby to landowners and further legitimise things.

    - Should it be pro-actively promoting to landowners, with the aim of getting "general cache-placement approval"?

A big yes. There are a lot of caches out there that are already on private land.

    - should it act as a "single & convenient point of contact" for caching enquiries (eg from both people wanting to go hunting, and landowners who find a cache)?

A tricky one. I do not think it should replace the Geocaching.com logo on cache containers but do think if a person placing a cache does not want to put their own mobile number of the cache an alternative number could be made available by the association.

    - should it be promoting a single set of UK-wide (or GB-wide etc) "local recommendations" for cache placement?

It should provide information to Geocachers on areas that have been given the green light and any exceptional rules for cache placement in those areas e.g. The forestry Commision have allowed cache placement on their land as long as it is within 20 metres of a track.

It should also provide information of sensitve landowners, forbidden caching areas and any complaints from landowners.

    - should it be involved with cache approval?

The cache approvers need to be aware of locations where caches are not allowed. So there will have to be some communication between them and the Association. They will need to refer to the association but do not neccesarily need to be a representative of the Association. I also think we need to define how caches would get rejected:

Landowner says no- Cache not allowed

Landowner is not aware- If it is a big landowner then it should be referred to the expertise of the association to seek approval. If it is a smaller landowner for example a farmer or private landowner then that is up to the team to seek approval

    - what should it be called?

    Not Important to me.

    Thanks

    Chris

Our Legend runs all day on a fully charged set of batteries (though we also have a car power lead when driving).

Note - I have no connection with the company - I'm a satisfied customer.

I use this battery/charger combo as well (I have an Garmin eMap). It is well worth the investment when you consider that a pack of Duracell M3's will give you little change from a fiver.

The charger is really quick (A couple of hours), it has a cigar lighter adapter (As well as mains) and shuts off/indicates when the batteries are charged. You can opt to charge 2 or 4 batteries at a time.

In a full days caching I will only need to change the batteries perhaps once with the 2000mAh batteries that come with it.

You may want to look out for this product on eBay. My friend got his from there and saved himself a tenner.

    Thanks

  15. So- If they have not closed the road once in the last year and do not mark it as a private road then I can use it...

I am not going to though. Consulting the OS map again I notice the parking for Beacon Hill (Where Room 101 is/was) is probably the best bet. I know it is possible to safely cross the A34 via the road bridge and there is a footpath that lead to the entrance of the 'private' road. A little bit further to walk but no hassle from Mr 'I havent got anything better to do'.

Nice to hear how US law deals with this sort of thing. It's probably the 'English roots' of your legal system that causes all the problems icon_wink.gif

  16. I am trying to find out what a yellow road indicates on an O/S map. It says it is a road usually greater than 4M in width. I want to know if a road indicated in yellow on an O/S map is actually a public highway.

The reason I ask is that I met a rather unpleasant man while trying to do 'Another Lost Line' the other day. I attempted to park near the footpath on leading to the cache and was met by a local resident who informed me the road was private (No signs indicating it was though). Not having an appropriate O/S map I could not argue my point but when I got home I checked my maps hence the question above. He said the council had told him it was private.

  17. Another tip when logging caches at Internet Cafes:

Make sure you untick the box 'remember my login' when you logon to Geocaching.com. You do not want to have a cookie created on their PC for your login.

  18. Here's my opinion:

1-I am at about 230 caches and have paid for parking at a good few caches. I do not object to it if I am forewarned of the cost in the cache description.

2-I am already paying for petrol to get to the caches which is probably the biggest outlay so the odd few caches that you have to pay parking/entrance to are OK in my opinion as long as point 1 is adhered to.

3- Caches in places you have to pay to enter should have the permission of the landowner and the Cache placer should be prepared to pay the costs of entry to check up on the cache from time to time. If the cache placer is not prepared to do that then they should not place the cache.

4- The pay for entry location should be somewhere worth visiting.

5- As long as the cache placer has not got a vested interest in the place where the cache is placed then I cannot see how it could be deemed commercial.

6- As far as site entry fees are concenred I have not yet payed an entrance fee to get to a cache. I think it is not a good idea if there are places in the area cache can be hidden without this cost. Exceptions have to be made for caches placed in cities as it is very difficult to find appropriate sites for caches.

    Thanks

  20. Yep I also have had errors so large when viewing mapsource maps that they cannot be put down to GPSr inaccuracies. Quite often I use the map on my eMap to (try to) navigate to caches it indicates are on one side of a river or railway line only to find they are on the other side.

The answer is that the maps do not seem to be very accurate when it comes to things that are not roads. I wonder if they just drew lines for road and rail in the rough area when they wrote the map database thinking that people would not actually use the maps to walk along riversides.
