  1. A month from when the files started containing the BOM. I DID report it here, right after it occurred. But nothing will be done until 3/13/2012. That's not good service IMHO.
  2. On another thread, Moun10bike posted.... This issue was caused by the addition of a byte order mark (BOM) at the start of the GPX files generated by the site in preparation for handling Unicode. While this is allowable practice, it is not recommended and has broken some third-party applications. Since the BOM is not necessary for UTF-8 files, we will be removing it in our next site release, currently scheduled for Feb. 28th. ...One correction to my previous post - the fix will be in our March 13th release rather than our February 28th release. Since Groundspeak is going to take a month to fix the file problem that "has broken some third-party applications", can I get a 1 month credit on my premium membership?!?
  3. As of the last update of the geocaching Web site, Groundspeak is apparently now adding BOM (byte-order-mark) characters at the beginning of their GPX files, and it's causing lots of software to choke on the files. There's a discussion of the issue on the GSAK forums. The change was made to accommodate Unicode characters, or so I've read. Clyde (the genius behind GSAK) has just made available a stand-alone utility program that will strip those characters from the beginning of a file. Click here for more information. Alternatively, you can open the GPX file in a text editor and delete the first three characters in the file. That has apparently solved the problem for some users. --Larry Thank you Larry & Clyde. That does work, but this is a cumbersome solution to have to unzip the PQ run the strip program rezip the files email the files back to myself All so that I can use the PQ on my phone. In a pinch, it'll work, but it certainly won't allow me to update in the field. I'm going to have to do all this work on the home PC before I can head out caching A resolution to the new gpx files is needed. GeoHunter isn't supported any longer so I guess I'll be looking for another app to use. Suggestions are welcome (but GeoBeagle isn't an option as it's having the same problems with the new files). I really don't want to pay +$9 for Geocaching's app...as a premium user, I balk at having to pay even more to use their software...
  4. With the recent gpx files received, I've not been able to get them to sync into GeoHunter on my Android phone. This started with the file I received on 2/16/12. Older files are working but of course, they're getting out of date. What steps will reproduce the problem? 1.Open new gpx file with AndroZip 2.Sync /sdcard/download in GeoHunter 3. What is the expected output? What do you see instead? I expect the files to sync/update, but with the newest gpx files sent from geocaching.com this week, I get the following message... "Error parsing file 'File 8222559_Travelers.gpx PI must not start with xml (position: unknown @1:5 in java.io.InputStreamReader@45b7dcd0)'. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? GeoHunter 1.9, AndroZip 2.1, on Android OptimusV 2.2.1 Please provide any additional information below. On Geocaching.com forum, it was suggested that the problem might be due to an extra character that's now at the front of the files, but that doesn't help me fix the problem....
  5. Soooooo....what do I do to get the gpx files to load into Geohunter now?
  6. Starting on 2/16, I've had problems with a pocket query syncing to GeoHunter on my phone (Android smartphone). After I unzip the file using Androzip and then try to sync it in GeoHunter, I get the following message... "Error parsing file 'File 8222559_Travelers.gpx PI must not start with xml (position: unknown @1:5 in java.io.InputStreamReader@45b7dcd0)'. The PQ has not been changed in any way (by me) since the last time it ran. This morning, I tried building upon another existing PQ, and it also returned the same error message. Does anyone have any ideas what's causing this, & how to fix it? Thanks much!
  7. Looking for some advice....I haven't seen any current discussions on this topic so am posting this issue hoping for some guidance. I'm seeking a solution for entering multi-cache coordinates in the field into my smart phone & being able to navigate to them based on my current position. I'm a premium member using PQs downloaded to my phone into the free Geohunter app. This works great for finding single caches, but not so well (at all) for entering multi-stage coordinates. When I started caching about 7 months ago, my research directed me to using free apps (GeoBeagle then GeoHunter) instead of paying $9.99 for the Geocaching app. I've been doing pretty well with my Android smart phone and this setup. BUT....it's not so good at multi-caches where I would need to input coordinates to find anything beyond stage 1. So...does anyone have recommendations for a remedy? Is there a (free or cheap) mobile-friendly website or app you'd recommend for getting accurate directions for coordinates? I've found maps that will pinpoint the coordinate, but not integrate where I'm at in relation to it, like my Geohunter app does with my PQs. Before considering a dedicated GPS unit, I'm looking for advice on how to get my smart phone to work better for the multi-caches. Thanks! msoregon91 Creedmoor, NC
  8. I've read a lot of cache descriptions & posts warning how we must be stealthy when retrieving the cache around muggles & I just don't know why. After all, it is a game, and if someone should observe & become interested, all the better, right? Though I realize that our behavior (walking in circles, muttering to ourselves, , etc) probably makes us look bizarre (to say the least), to those that happen to care to notice, I still don't see the need to be overly discreet. In fact, I think that hovering in an area, waiting for the right moment of solitude to grab & sign, might attract more attention than being quick & moving on. I know that we don't want the caches moved, vandalized or thrown away. Other than that, is there any reason to be so secretive & to warn other cachers to be stealthy? Just wondering if I'm missing something...
  9. Thanks! But I still don't know what the paw print icon is. GC1MH4F is an example. When I open caches like these, I can navigate like any others, but the Details button isn't available. I've yet to physically hunt these, since I'm not sure what they are. If they are caches, what's different about them?
  10. I'm new to geocaching & am using my LG Optimus V (Android platform) with Geobeagle. Since there's no help available on the phone, I was hoping to find it online, but didn't find any. Please let me know if any exist. In the meantime, can anyone explain what the various icons mean...in particular the paw prints that come up with only a cache code but no name or details? Thanks!

  12. Thanks, but I still have some questions.... 1. Once I click on the email attachment and am taken to AndroZip on my phone, do I click "Open" when asked to Choose Action? 2. When I do click Open, my instinct tells me to Complete Action with "GeoBeagle", but is that correct? 3. The 3rd step in the GeoBeagle/Pocket Query instructions says "In GeoBeagle, click on the "Offline List" button to get to the cache list page. Click the menu button, then select "Sync GPX files from /sdcard/download." GeoBeagle will import all caches from every file ending ".gpx" or ".zip". " but I don't have an "Offline List" button. What/where is this? Thanks much!
  13. I'm new to this but love it. We went last weekend & found 4 using my Android (LG Optimus V), GeoBeagle & Geocaching.com. I've set up 2 PQ's to run & I receive them via email, plus I can preview them on the website, but I don't know how I can use them on my phone without internet access. When I open the file through my email on my phone (using AndroZip) I am prompted with a menu of choices to open the file with. I've tried many (AndroZip, AndroZip Text Reader, GeoBeagle) but none of them open it in a usable manner. If someone familiar with opening PQ's on the Android can help me I'd really appreciate it. Until then, I'll be forced to only cache when I have internet access & can navigate from the PQ preview.... Thanks in advance for your help.
