  1. The Viewranger OS mapping app has been our constant companion for eleven years of GeoCaching. Apart from the obvious benefit of immediately displaying location on any previously downloaded Ordnance Survey map, individual POIs could be added and displayed while on the trail, Co-ords of any chosen type would be displayed in realtime, plus straight line distance between POIs could also be displayed. Finally any GeoCaching Cache info GPX file could also be uploaded to Vewranger to display all Cache sites on the downloaded maps. This was all invaluable when searching for Caches, and for us, indispensable when hiding Caches. Unfortunately, Viewranger having now "merged" with Outdoor Active, none of these facilities are available.with the Outdoor Active app. Strangely enough this so called "merger" was launched as being of great benefit and improvement for all Viewranger users. Nothing of the sort, it is a mega downgrade. My question is this. Is there any OS Mapping app available which includes the versatility outlined above for Apple iOS devices? We have been unable to find any apps remotely offering these features on the App Store. Many thanks Neil & Jackie C aka Team Lankidden
  2. How to calculate distance between Lat/Long Coordinates BEFORE Caches are reviewed and published? Many thanks Neil C
  3. Words of one syllable please of procedure to transfer own Caches to another CO. Many thanks Neil C aka Team lankidden
  4. Thank you for your prompt reply, this is exactly the info which I needed. Neil C
  5. I'm sure this query has been raised many times, but having re-located three hundred miles distant from my original Cache locations, and thereby no longer being able to realistically continue to undertake maintenance , I have the agreement of an experienced local Cacher to take on the ownership. So what is the procedure for initiating the changeover? Many thanks Neil C aka Team Lankidden
  6. How do I - download a pre-created PQ, from it create a List, and upload that List to Lists on my iPhone? I cracked how to do it on the earlier and now obsolete app, but so far achieving what presumably is a simple task on the current app has me beat!! Thanks Team Lankidden
  7. Our GPS unit of choice is an iPad 2, via the GeoCaching App plus ViewRanger Mapping App, which works well for us. Today I wanted to FTF on half a dozen newly posted Caches, but it was too early to include and download them as part of a PQ, so I downloaded individual GPX files for each Cache and successfully imported each file as a POI into Viewranger. What I couldn't work out was how to send or import the GPX files to our iPad. The iTunes interface doesn't seem to supply any options, so as the iPad is linked to our GeoCaching UserName, and picks up PQ files as they are created, what is the procedure for importing individual GPX files. Many thanks Team Lankidden PS Successfully located all five newly placed Caches with Viewranger and paper files, but was only second TF ! !
  8. So, if I understand you correctly, the only place it is saved, and the only way I can return to it as a saved Co-ord/Waypoint is within the actual Cache page to which the Co-Ords were added? Certainly I have seen the Orange Flag locating the new position, but wondered how I would call it up when needed. That part of my query you would seem to have answered. So, the Flag locates to the newly entered Co-ords if neither "Set to Current Location" or "Set to GeoCache Location" is touched to select, but what action occurs if either of theses Icons is selected? Many thanks Lankidden
  9. We go Caching via an iPad2, the GC iPhone App, oh, and the ViewRanger OS Map App as well. No accounting for taste, but it works for us. My query relates to entering new Co-ords into the GC iPhone App, for example after solving a Puzzle cache. Entering the new Co-ords per se is easy enough, after which a choice of "Set to Current Location" or "Set to GeoCache Location" can be touched to select, or ignored. If ignored, touching Done to select brings up the new Co-ords on the Map page, whereafter it is possible to navigate to the new Cache site. Here is my query. Is there any way within the GC iPhone App whereby those Co-Ords/Cache location can be saved/edited/displayed for future use. If it is automatically saved, how can it be brought up? Or is it just lost when quitting the GC iPhone App? Many thanks Lankidden Oxford UK
  10. Hi Guys, Thanks for the replies. I think I've probably been making this more difficult than it actually is. Yes, I do have the latest 4.5.1 version, and as I said, I am working with an Apple iPad2, an amazing bit of kit, and as long as it is protected with my life, it does after all belong to "She Who Must Be Obeyed", a superb GPS instrument for GeoCaching. Where I think I was going wrong is that I assumed that I did actually need to unzip, and then somehow import manually the GPX file to the iPad. What I think happens, although there is no download button to download the GPX file, as per the iPhone FAQ, is that once the PQ File has been created and is available for download, it then automatically appears in the logged in Account on the iPad, and is then, as you guys have pointed out, available for saving for offline use, within the Pocket Queries Search Tab. Anyway, that's what seems to have happened with a test PQ File which I had created earlier. In other words, I assumed that an iTunes/iPad connection was necessary as for normal App updates or MapTile additions. What also threw me I guess, is that after the PQ File has been imported once, it would appear to no longer be available for an additional import, if it has been edited or deleted. Unfortunately, the PQ Help details are somewhat less than comprehensive, particularly where the iPad is concerned, read non-existant ! ! So, thanks again Neil C aka Lankidden
  11. I'm still totally stuck here. Some PQs I have imported to the iPad with seemingly no problems, but at present I am failing completely. PQ created via GC WebPage - no problem PQ downloaded to local HD - no problem Then what?? Add GPX File to iPad Library ? ? ? Unlike Viewranger App there seems to be no easy way I can find to include the GPX file in any iPad Sync. Clicking on Search in the iPad GC App and then clicking Pocket Queries only reveals the PQ's I have previously, and now forgotten how to, import. This is driving me insane, and wasting so much time it is untrue. All I need to know is how to successfully import a Pocket Query .GPX File from my computer HD, presumably via iTunes, to the GC App so that I can save the details for offline usage. Not a lot to ask, but I do need help here. Neil C aka Lankidden Oxford UK
  12. I have completely lost the plot on uploading/importing Pocket Queries onto the iPad 2. I have successfully uploaded two PQ's some weeks ago, but for the life of me, I cannot remember the procedure. Steps to follow in words of one syllable would be much appreciated ?? Many thanks, Neil C aka Lankidden
  13. Hi Guys, We're still comparative newbies, although this weekend we completed our first 8 x multiple cache hunt, plus bonus ninth, so think we might be getting the hang of it, happily working with GeoCaching sites on our iPad2. However, before we went away, I created my second Pocket Queries file, and try as I might I couldn't remember how to import the file into the iPad app. I do already have my first set of PQs successfully imported, but after this weekend's failure, I could really do with some pointers as to how to repeat the process. Secondly, when we had decoded the clues for the ninth bonus cache, this gave us the full degrees, mins, secs Lat/Long Co-ords, but again we could not find any way to import these co-ords into the GC iPad app. We got around the problem by importing into the Viewranger OSGB app, and using that to navigate to GZ, but again, assists in importing to the GC iPad app would be much appreciated. Many thanks Lankidden Oxford UK
  14. Hi Tim, Have just been out to find today's Cache. Had all three Apps open, ViewRanger, Motion X, and the Groundspeak GeoCache App. On a severely limited survey of a single Cache, whilst standing at GZ, ViewRanger displayed a distance to site of between zero & two feet. At the same location, GeoCache displayed a distance to site of twelve to sixteen feet, while when Motion X displayed zero feet to site, I was actually standing at around fifteen feet from the site, in fairly dense undergrowth. Although clumsy, I do find it easier to navigate to GZ by switching screens within ViewRanger. Switching between the Google/Bing Map, and the Distance Window within the GeoCacheApp is fairly accurate, but the App is let down by being designed for the iPhone, thus causing blurring if zoomed to full screen on the iPad. Motion X I find is an excellent product, with the iPad version being scaled up to successfully take account of the iPad screen real estate. The screen display is excellent, and the "My Position" window first class, I would like to take more advantage of what Motion X has to offer, but I need to work my way around the many many windows and options. For the record, you can find ViewRanger's Home Page here. http://viewranger.co.uk/ and I see that the USA Nat Geo 1:24,000 mapping is readily available. For me, navigating via GPS, while superimposing my GPS position onto known and trusted paper mapping iPad screen images is a no brainer, and once I get used to the additional features built into Motion X, and can combine both Apps while in the field I might even stand a chance of becoming reasonably proficient at GeoCaching. Had a look at MacCaching, but as the WebSite doesn't appear to have been updated in over two years, and as the App is only compatible with Garmin & Magellan units, it's probably not for me. All the best Lankidden
  15. Hi Tim, The ViewRanger App enables the downloading of complete Maps, or sections of Maps from most National Mapping Agencies, which here in the UK is The Ordnance Survey. The complete UK National map at 1:250,000 ie road atlas scale is a freebie, while 1:50,000 & 1: 25,000 walking and hiking maps can be downloaded for as little as £00.12 GBP per tile/section. Any POI or Cache can be entered, and live GPS positioning enables navigation to the POI to be displayed against realistic hiking mapping, showing footpaths, field boundaries, woodland, streams etc etc etc. This was one reason for which we purchased the iPad, although apparently ViewRanger, with which I have no connection other than being a satisfied customer, is available for almost any Smart Phone worldwide. I have now downloaded the Groundspeak App, but have yet to try it out seeking a Cache, but I will give it a go tomorrow, in comparison to Viewranger, and will post a report. What I would really like to find is an App which has a simple "old fashioned" GPS position window, displaying current coordinates in real time, just like my initial Magellan did around eight years ago, or any bog standard GPS handheld will still do. As I wrote in my initial post, Viewranger does display current coordinates, but for no more than three seconds on screen per click. When GC'ing via the Groundspeak App, which version of mapping works best for you, street, topo, or satellite? Lankidden
  16. Sorry, which iPhone App? The ViewRanger App I've downloaded is the iPad version, although it is also available as an iPhone App, or are we talking about something completely different?? Lankidden
  17. Our iPad 2 is around ten days old, and was bought primarily to supplement family desktop & laptop as a laptop Browser, games player & eReader, but also to hopefully negate a need for a separate dedicated GPS handheld, for our relatively undemanding leisure, mainly lowland, walking. At the time, there was no thought of GeoCaching. HOWEVER ! ! ! Three local caches have now been visited, and two out of the three coordinates were spot on. Leaving aside the obvious restrictions caused by it's physical size, while the iPad functions superbly well as a navigation device via the ViewRanger App, navigating to a precise point via pre-loaded coordinates, so far seems a tad clumsy. The coordinates only remain on the screen for around three seconds per click, and while the audio alarm is fairly accurate, displaying a "distance from" distance seems to require continually toggling between the Details Window and the previous Menu Page. So here is my question. Is there something I have missed, and is there an easier way of navigating via the iPad to a precise coordinate that I have so far not come across? Many thanks Lankidden Oxford UK
