  1. I may have not seen where to do it but I know there is an advanced search page where you can use keywords to search for a cache.

My suggestion is to have a button on the main page and on your "my cache page" that takes you to the advanced search with a field added so that you can look up a persons geo-name to see what caches they have placed etc.. and to see their profile.

  2. Heaven forbid they have more visitors to a state park that the people of that state pay for, maintain and pay the employees. I agree with the earlier poster who said how many people can it be. Do they have busloads of people coming in everyday running around with handheld GPS's? It couldn't possible be all that many people, we can see that from the logs of the caches and what's wrong with wanting to get out into nature and enjoy it and at the same time have some fun. I truly doubt that an Army surplus ammo can or a tupperware container are going to destroy the environment. Let's be reasonable. I am all for obeying the rules but some rules have no basis in reality or praticality. Are they going to ban certain hiking boots because their soles are too thick, or overweight people because they are leaving too deep an impression in the ground?

    Oh well...

  3. Is there any way on this site to enter a friends name to get to his user profile. In other words if I know a friend may be involved in this, is there a way to enter his name, "John Doe" and have it take me to his profile page so I can see his activity etc...? icon_biggrin.gif

  5. Actually I just got it working. I called Tec Support, they answered very quickly btw. I kind of figured it out on my own though. There was a button you could uncheck if there were errors having to do with the speed.

My PC is a 2G P4 so I think what was happening was that the speed was so fast that is was causing errors and it was unable to "keep up". as soon as i unchecked the box and restarted the process, it started up right away, I also downloaded and extracted the file to the desktop that time instead of creating a new file.

I hope this helps any future owners, thanks for the quick response!

  7. Hi,

I just bought an ETrex legend. I wanted to make sure that I had the most up to date software on it, so I went to the PC, connected the serial cable to the PC and the GPS. I went to Garmin.com and found the newest version, I think a 911k update. I downloaded the update, extracted it and ran the executable. It got to the point of automatically finding the GPS and when it goes to start updating the version the PC says:

"E Trex Legend software version 2.29

    Erasing...

(This may take a few minutes)"

    the GPS says:

    "Loader

    Loading.."

That's all it does, it doenst seem to be doing anything at all. The first time I let it run for 20 minutes plus. I hit the abort button, restarted the GPS and began again and there seems to be no change.

    Please help a Newbie!

    Thanks

  9. I noticed that Matthew said we are planting no new trees or erecting new mountains etc... I didn't know we built the Rockies but I could be mis-informed. As far as not planting trees, I am not sure where he has been. Paper companies plant tons of trees. Pretty good idea too if you ask me, they chop one down, plant a few more in its place, they want to make money so they keep their base product in supply by planting the trees that they weill chop down in 15-20 years. I just don't get into the environmental-wacko mentality. When I go in the woods, I don't litter, I just walk. I can't see how walking on ground is going to cause the end of the world as we know it, the ground is meant to be walked on. One of the first things I noticed on this site was the phrase, "casche in, trash out" how great is that, people go into the woods to enjoy nature, get some exercise have some fun and at the same time clean the area up. Where others simply walk in witha heavy backpack camp out a few days build a fire and become one with themselves. I think it's great when anyone wants to get out an d enjoy nature and the beauty of it all, but taken to extremes is simply silly and not necessary. When I start this hobby I plan on making sure that I leave it as I found it or better and to enjoy the outdoors as much as I can, and not worry about the people that believe their cliam to the land is any more important or justified as mine.

I will walk where I want to walk with the exception of large meat eating animals in my path or a farmer with a shotgun.

  10. When you use a GPS, it keeps track of where you have been and the waypoint that you are tying to find. Is there a way to take that data from your GPS and transfer it to your PC so you can open up a map and see on the PC where you have been.

In other wirds if I (in Florida) found a few caches and had my track in the GPS could I go home and look at a map on the PC and see my path on a big screen and keep adding to it so that one day I can have a map with traces of lines all over it showing where I have been?

  11. I have just heard about geocaching and as soon as I am able, I am going to get a GPS and join in the fun.

I have noticed a lot about the Travel Bugs and the low rate of actual movement or cooperation.

One thing that may work is to have a small card that is laminated, with very easy to understand instructions on what exactly is supposed to happen. Make it an honor system, that you dont move the travel bug unless you intend to move it within the week.

It seems to me, after a day of reading the message forums etc... that this is a very nice group of people and I think we can count on the honor system to a certain extent. One guy responded that he hadn't dropped off the TB yet because he doesn't live or breathe this game, which is fine, but if you know thats the case, don't take something out of a cache if you have no real intention of moving it along, remember, someone went to the trouble of buying a tag, entering the information and supplying the trinket so be fair and move it along if you are willing, if not then just log your name and move on to the next one.

Just a suggestion from a one day old newbie!
