  1. Thoguht it would be a good idea to have a topic for newbies (like me) to read and for novices-experts to post.

basically what I am asking for is advice for those of us that are new to the hobby, what I would like is a "do" and a "don't".

Please keep it short, like one sentance a piece, I think it would be a great way for those just getting started to have good advice before ever going out on a hunt...example:

    1)DO:

Write clearly in the logbook at the cache

    2)DON'T:

Run through the woods, drunk firing a shotgun.

    You get the idea icon_biggrin.gif

  2. The page that shows you the updated travelbugs....

Is there anyway on that page to show a little more detail for example, right now it looks like this...

"3/28/2002 Clay4 placed The S2000 Travel Bug in Lone Mountain Cache (Nevada) (still there) "

Is there anyway to add information so that it looks like....

3/28/2002 Clay4 placed The S2000 Travel Bug in Lone Mountain Cache (Nevada) (still there) 3/01/02 - 1,254 miles

That ending shows the date placed and the miles are of course the total miles traveled.

Seen a few C-5 next door but mostly P-3's I am a mile or two from the Jax Naval Air Station, I know it's Navy...sorry icon_smile.gif

I didn't want to come off as rude in my post and I am glad you saw it that way. The original post really got my back up. I have never been in the military, but I will say that on one side of my family there has been nothing but military...Army...sorryicon_smile.gif

There is one thing that I don't do and that is criticize our military. I know this country does a lot around the world, some see it as us putting our noses where they don't belong, some see as as the neighborhood bullies etc...I will be the first to admit that we don't get everything right although we do try and as far as the military goes, their job is to follow orders, they don't just make it up as they go. If other countries had an active military force I am sure they too would suffer from peace time casualties and friendly fire accidents, I would be willing to bet though that if you took the population on the US Armed Forces and compared it to the population in general, I would say that the stats as far as accidental deaths go is probably comparable, if not smaller.

I for one appreciate what you and all the other members of the armed forces do for us very much, and when I see someone mock or criticize us it does bother me, but sometimes you have to look at the source.

So thanks for your reply and I wish you well!

You may not know this but Canadas Armed Forces are known world wide for.....uhh....well.....hmmm...hang on i'm getting it.....ahhh nevermind.

The US's armed Forces are also know for being deployed around the world at all times to protect our interests and those of our allies. So it is only natural that we would have a lot of accidents and accidental deaths as well as friendly fire, because our military is actually out there. I would also love to know what the friendly death/enemy death ratio is.

I'm not picking on Canada nor am I assuming that you did not mean what you said as an insult, more likely pointing out what I am sure is a fact, but I can tell you this, if something were to happen to Canada, there are a lot of Americans that would fight for you and with you and die for your country.

  8. I jsut got an eTrex legend a fw days ago and mine was working pretty well too. It sounds like if you follow the instructions on the previous post you should be ok.

I noticed on mine that I would switch back and forth between the navagation screen and the satellite screen. I do that to make sure that there are at least 3 satellites that are "locked on"

I also let it sit for a couple of minutes to tlet it settle down a bit and get a good lock. When you go to the navagation screen you will have that big arrow and you need to walk aound a few feet for it to really get your position, it seemed to me that if you just stand in one spot, waiting for the compass to register it won't, it needs to be moved around to get settled in.

    1)Start Unit

2)wait for unit to load and get a few satellites

3)Hold down the Click Stick for a few seconds

4)The screen will change to a screen with a man kneeling with a flag in the ground.

5)Use the click stick to move down until the first set of coordinates are highlighted.

6)Click the click stick to select and a little number keypad will pop up

7)Use the keypad to enter the coordinates that you see used on the website

8)After entering both coordinates, click ok or you can move up to the field that has the "001" on the flagpole and you can rename the waypoint.

9)Once you have clicked OK use the button on the top right to get to the main menu screen and click on the icon marked "FIND"

    10)Click waypoints

    11)Click BY NAME

12)Select the waypoint that you just saved and click GOTO

I know this is basically what was already written but I just stepped through exactly the way I do it and I hope it helps!
