  1. Well, I would like to try one. It isn't that I don't believe you, just would like to see it for myself. The strong units seemed to be good on other units. Perhaps I will try one on the yellow E-Trex first. If you can spare it, send 3. One to screw up, one to practice getting it right, and a third to decide you were right anyway. Thanks,
  2. I have two that are easy to get to, they were done within hours of being posted. I have one that is a 4 hour round trip hike, it tool a week. I have one that is a 5 hour hike, terrain 4.5. It has only had a few visits in over a year. So the answer is - IT DEPENDS.
  3. I just sold my Vista to a local hiker. He got all the original stuff, plus a LARGE printed copy of the manual (he wears BIG glasses) a set of 2200 mah rechargeable batteries, and a custom mil-spec carry case for $200. My new 60CS is already 25% here. Keep your eyes open, they are out there. Good luck.
  4. You are absolutely correct. Topo is a great program. But it you need tech support from them, you would be better served to bang your head against a brick wall than to contact them. I tried to explain it to the guy, but he was a dense as the above-mentioned brick wall. Suffice it to say that TOPO does not support USB, for now. So I got the serial connections.
  5. It may also suffer from a lack of accuracy. Some of the older ones only had two digit precision, and the newer ones have 3 digit precision. HOWEVER.... You found a cache, didn't you? So keep going, plenty of time to upgrade later. Enjoy.
  6. Rocky River is an honorable cacher. The E-Trex was just as he represented it, and the deal he cut was just great. I would deal with him again without question! R.R., the check (money order) is in the mail. Thank you sir.
  7. Yeah, I know. But I use National Geographic TOPO. A LOT! Acording to the tech support guy (Michael Wildshut) from NG TOPO, the only way I can get TOPO to work on USB is if the people who supplied me with the USB cable also send me the USB driver for the cable. If I get that driver, TOPO will work fine. Well, Garmin assures me that NO DRIVER is needed for the USB cable to work, and the dude at NG TOPO is full of sh!t. What do you think? So I need the serial cable. I like to leave it on the computer, but I like to have it with my laptop too. So, I just sucked it up and got two. But thanks for the input..... another time it might have saved me a few $$$$
  8. Well, seems like everyone is satisfied with getfeetwet.com, so I placed my order this morning for a 60CS and two serial cables. I like to leave one at home and one at work for the benchmark hunts on the way home. He cut me a great deal. Now I have to wait. The buyer of my Vista is expecting delivery tonight, so I will be GPS-less this weekend. Well, both my jeep and dog needs a bath, and we (dog and I) are walking in the Easter Parade tomorrow, and I have 4000 .223 shells to reload.... guess I can keep busy! I too will comment on the service - when it arrives. Thanks for the input.
  9. I have been searching this road on and off for the Benchmarks. I often travel this road to and from work, and for a little diversion I will grab one now and then. A previous BM hunter has logged several on this road, but I find the marks he has taken photographs of ARE NOT the correct marks. This road has numerous marks from the State of New Mexico. For instance Look at THIS ONE Notice the close-up photo. It is clearly a State of New Mexico disk, not A 335. Arnold A is a nice guy, I don't want to piss him off. He may not even be in country right now, last contact I had with him he was in Iraq. But I suspect his accuracy on some of these is not correct. Anyone have a suggested solution? Forget it and leave it stand? Politely call him on it? Dunno. Thanks.
  10. Interesting. Model and firmware????
  11. So it guess you wouldn't bother using one of these for your cat, then. I LOVE IT!!! I want to test it. On the neighbor's cats! All 50 of them. seneca, one of the FEW times we will agree on something. Cherish the moment!
  12. Worse yet, Magellan does this when it first loses satellite lock. You can be several hundred feet down the trail before you know it quit on you. Magellan owners complain the Garmins lose lock first. Not entirely true, they just tell you about it right away and let you make the decision. The Magellans just fake it a while and hope to re-gain lock before you notice it. 6 of one, or a 1/2 dozen of the other.
  13. Maybe it would fit on my little Texas chihuahua.... maybe... on his ears.
  14. Yep - E-mail on the way! Was a late night last night.
  15. WOW! Getfeetwet.com has a real bargain there. Seems like it is too good to be true. So I called them. Got a real unprofessional and tinney sounding recording. So now I wonder, are they for real? Anyone else ever deal with them, and how was the service? Thanks again.
  16. Hey Y-all... the time has come. Ft. Bliss PX reports that they will not have the GPS-map 60 for MONTHS! I don't want to wait that long. I know somebody here knows this answer, who has the 60C/S IN STOCK with the best overall deal for price/delivery? To this point every other GPSr I have bought for myself was from the PX. I have no idea which internet site is the best choice. Thanks Y-all. Oh, those of you tired of GPS-60 threads, just don't read this one!
  17. This may help you. Try THIS system. Good luck.
  18. We will take one. My daughter Desert_Kid has wanted a GPSr for herself for some time now. We don't do pay-pal. Would us sending you a Money Order be OK? Let us know what address to send it to if so. Thanks.
  19. I just finished an ammo can much like the one in the photos, only I used a 1 inch stainless steel bolt - nut - washers and lock-tite 271. It ain't coming off. I am an electronics tech, not a machinist. But the machine shop has lots of machinists who need a VCR cleaned or a cassette player cleaned. Barter works. The machine shop guys can do anything over lunch.... much stronger than the major surplus locks. Those had a very small cheap key lock.
  20. If I can't take my little Texas Chihuahua with me, then I don't wanna go! Texas Chihuahua.
  21. Been cleaning up my Benchmark, Geocaching, and hiking data in ExpertGPS. I noticed both yesterday and today that many of the maps do not load all the way, but instead give me a green circle with a yellow check in it. Anyone else experiencing this, or is something corrupt in my ExpertGPS program? Thanks.
  22. It's there to keep from ticking off anyone trying to use a radio nearby. It's more to protect other users then to protect the use of the unit. It's been almost 20 years since I had my last EM fields class but I believe the iron core only serves to prevent a voltage spike from reaching the GPSr. It isn't IRON, it is ferrite. And it DOES attenuate any signals outside the shielded cable. Now-a-days you can even get it in a "MIX" to target specific frequencies. I like mix T-43, but most of my ham radio work is on HF. The ferrite units can be had as small as beads for individual wires, or cores large enough to make transformers out of.
  23. GOSH.... I thought GPS UNITS AND SOFTWARE WAS a separate group for discussing - well - GPS UNITS AND SOFTWARE. Since the GARMIN GPSmap60C/CS IS a gps, and it DOES interface with software, well... you get the idea. Maybe if Magellan came out with something cool we could have something else to type about. Personally, I could care less about a french-owned GPS. But instead of making a scene I just wouldn't read it. As they say is when the delete button is for.
  24. I will make this offer only once. WILD TURKEY !!! For both CO-Admin AND the horse!
