  1. Happy Birthday. A new Garmin GPSmap60CS sounds like a suitable gift! Good luck.
  2. I use GPS (and ham radio) to capture weather balloons. There are a number of National Weather Service (NWS) stations around the USA that release weather balloons twice a day. These balloons have weather instruments, a radio transmitter, and a parachute. The NWS captures and decodes the data for the flight till the balloon explodes at about 100,000 feet. Then the package falls back to earth on the parachute. The data gets posted on the internet. Using ham radio equipment and techniques, we track the package by radio direction finding. When the balloon pops and the NWS posts the flight data on the internet. A ham at home downloads the data and processes it, then calls us on the air with the condensed flight data for us. Knowing this flight data, and using a program developed by hams for hams, we can predict the landing zone. We program the lat/lon into the GPSr, but still track via radio signals. It is interesting to see how accurate the predicted landing vs actual landing is. I have seen errors from 1/4 mile to 12 miles. We have captured 3 of the 4 we went after last weekend. And now you know why I don't have time for a lot of caching. Too much fun doing other stuff!
  3. WOW! Often enough I let another family member use my computer for logging since it is so much faster. So if I log out as Desert_Warrior, and seconds later Army_Scout or Desert Kid logs in, I might have any or all accounts deleted as a sock puppet. Well, that's it then. Kids ain't getting credit for any more finds. They are all mine now. In fact, I might just leave the kids at home and take the dog. Dog don't care about logging finds, only finding logs. Do I hafta delete the finds the kids already have? Or will they be grandfathered in and allowd to keep them?
  4. I dress in basic black out in the desert. But my hiking partner and Jeep driver Desert_Warrior wears camo. Parker the Texas chihuahua.
  5. I set my 60CS to distance, and 0.01 miles. It is close enough for me. .01 miles is one trackpoint every 50 feet.
  6. It is working now. Closing thread.
  7. I can't believe the number of people complaining about plastic taste. I wonder what they are doing wrong? How can you screw up putting water in a bag? I have no way of measuring it, but I bet the water out of an older camelbak "LEACHING' anything is less a hazzard than breathing in most urban areas. Do you wear a filter?
  8. Outstanding! Welcome to the addiction!
  9. Start by marking your location. But before you save it, scroll down to the LAT/LON area, and edit it to the location you want it to be. You can also change the symbol and name of the waypoint the same way. OR.... You can use EasyGPS and a serial cable for your GPSr, and just load them up from the program. If you like EasyGPS, consider buying ExpertGPS. It is a much more functional program. Good luck.
  10. Jeremy, Another problem has cropped up. Look at CE0225 and CE0226 in the benchmarks. I have uploaded some photos of the new bridge that replaced the old one that had the benchmarks on it. The benchmarks are gone. But something in the photo resizing has changed. The photos used to print on one page with room to spare. Now they are much larger than the page, so nearly 1/2 the photo is cropped out. I admit I have been uploading large (+/-300K) photos (for some time now), and letting the server cut them down to size. It keeps them consistantly the same size that way. Dunno.... Sorry. Thanks for the maps back.
  11. Yaaaa.... maps are back! It is so much easier to glance at a map on the page than to try to do anything else in the jeep while going to a benchmark. Thanks Jeremy! I know it isn't as efficient... ... but it sure helps! Thanks again.
  12. Only problem I see is that people do not log their DNFs. I have gotten several E-mails on one of my caches saying it was missing. It never is, they just DNF untill I practically TELL them where it is. But they don't log the DNF. So, IMHO, this feature would be of little use in practice.
  13. I have a number of Camelbak products. More than you (or my wife) want to know. Some will tell tales if the "plastic" taste. Well, you know what. It goes away. Really it does. Like about the second or third time you use it. I prefer the military versions. MIL-SPEC means tough. They weigh a bit more, but they will last. I detest gear that don't hold up and leaves you hanging. I have two main rigs ready for use. THIS ONE is my lightweight rig. I have several pouches that I clip to the harness for my radio, GPSr, pistol, and other accessories. It allows me to move quickly and still have the minimal gear needed for the mission. I own one of these in desert-camo. THIS ONE is the one my son took to Iraq. Carries a bit more gear, but not as much as the next. Also carries 3 liters of water. It is pretty much battle-proven, although a RPG hit on his Bradley blew holes in it and I had to send him a new bladder. Camelbak sent him two direct ti Iraq and didn't charge for it, a big +++ for Camelbak. I doubt the platapus would do any better! THIS ONE is what I choose for extended missions, when I need to carry more gear, or for extended summer missions in the desert. If the main compartment is empty, you can install and use a second 3 liter bladder, giving you 6 liters of water on the trail. You can never have two much water in the desert, especially if you hike with a big black dog! If you overfil the bladder, it holds nearly a gallon in this rig! This rig is my most used one. Even with 16 pounds of water, a two pound pistol, and other gear it still rides comfortable. IMHO, Camelbak was the first, and is still the best, although Spec-Ops brand is trying to catch up. Most of the other stuff, including the civilian camelbak gear, just isn't up to standard. But, it is light weight. If weight is all you care about, not wear, then those may be for you. The above is my opinion after using and seeing much of this gear doth in combat and on the trails in the USA. Of course, YMMV.
  14. Ho-hum.... another french magellan. Well, at least it got bumped for you again.
  15. I wish I could help you, but while I AM in Texas, you are probably as close to him as I am in El Paso (~800 miles away). I am replying to you for another reason. We have a B-36 Crash site right here in El Paso, crashed on 11 Dec 1953. I was wondering if you had any data on this event, and I would be willing to share the data I have discovered.
  16. Or.... click on the first one, hold down the shift, and click on the last one.
  17. I just yesterday found a yellow jeep sitting still long enough for me to get a photo, and now I can't find the cache page anymore. This has not been a good monday. Thanks.
  18. Hmm... I really don't care much about streets. I am more interested in topo. Thanks.
  19. I never remember.... is this the one that will work with my new GPSmap60CS? Thanks
  20. It took me a few minutes to quit laughing... That is probably the most efficient bit of programming I have EVER heard of!!!!! Thanks. The grin was worh the wait! I hope every problem you encounter is that amusing. I love it!
  21. Yellow Dog.... Let me bring your attention to THIS POST I believe it happened to me. Too many things are right for it to not be true. Perhaps it will happen to you also. I hope so. Good luck my friend. I hope yellow dog teaches Max about caching, he died before I learned of it.
  22. Well, another week. I just tried to print a benchmark sheet again. Still no maps on the print, although they show on the screen just fine. I MISS MY MAPS!!! There - I feel better now.
  23. From another dog-person... my heart goes out to you. I can hardly see the screen to type this. It is especially hard on the owner when you take him to the vet. I have never left a dog, I have sat and held them in my arms while the vet did tne deed. I have always stayed much longer than was necessary holding them. My vet is very understanding. We have the ashes of every one of them on a shelf in the living room. So your yellow dog is with Babe, Rusty, Max, Valcor, Reba, Kate, Quill, and a few other fine dogs we have lost in the last 20 years. When my yellow lab was at the end, my vet came to my house to do it. He was 18, I didn't want to stress him. She took the body away, and brought the ashes back a week later. I was in pieces. He was my best buddy for 18 years. The next day I couldn't go to work. So I stayed home to help my wife clean the carpet. Max had a few accidents over his last few weeks. While she was removing books from a book-case so we could clean the carpet, a scrap of paper fell out on the floor. It was this poem. If it should be that I grow weak, And pain should keep me from my sleep. Then you must do what must be done, For this last battle can't be won. You will be sad, I understand, Don't let your grief then stay your hand. For this day more than all the rest, Your love for me must stand the test. We've had so many happy years, What is to come can hold no fears. You'd not want me to suffer so, The time has come, please let me go. Take me where my need they'll tend, And please stay with me till the end. She handed it to me, and I read it, and I went to pieces all over again. I miss them all, but Max was my special buddy. Two weeks later my black buthead was born. Take my advice. Don't wait. start looking for another dog as soon as you can stand it. And don't pass up a chance to enjoy life tith him. Go to training. Make him a part of the family. And use every minute you have together. Soo sorry for your loss.
  24. Are you using the same format, the same map datum? DD MM.SSS or DD DDDDD or DD MM.MMM Downloading WGS-84 data, GPS set to NAD27? Possibilities.
