  1. If I can sign a log and leave a sig card I am happy. Though it would be nice not to have to dig though trash to find the log. My first find was under another name in 2001. I was amazed at the quality of swag in that cache. Now they are all just junk in my area. I am working on a multi part puzzle right now and if I ever solve it I will place a small bag of foreign coins for the next finder. I am doing my best to up the quality of swag.
  2. Now days malware comes from web sites. I have not even seen an email virus in a long time. It would not bother me at all to put your thumb drive in my PC. Even if it had a virus how would you get it? I would not run any executable files on it but viewing pictures and text documents is benign. Of course always keep up on your patches and antivirus updates. You probably have a greater risk of getting an infection from clicking on a link someone has posted in this forum than from a thumb drive.
  3. On the TV show Treasure Hunt they didn't have any problems with them hiding some containers with numeric electronic keypads at Mount Rushmore. They looked like bombs in my opinion. When I was there the security was very tough. I have no problem with the NPS not allowing caches in target areas like that but most national parks are not targets and it should be allowed with permit.
  4. Sometimes you are not looking for numbers. What little clue you gave us uses upper and lower case letters. That suggest something other than a a=1 b=2 c=3 type code. A link to the cache page or some more detail might be in order. Though if this is a puzzle cache look for some hints not someone to solve it for you.
  5. I think if everyone was more honest like this in their logs the micro spew problem would be much less of a problem. It is what it is a bad cache. I also would be grateful to read this so I don't waste my time.
  6. If you do the PDA thing just make doubly sure you can see the screen outdoors. Mine you can't and I spent a lot of time downloading software and getting things working only to find it was useless even in the shade. Heck it is hard to see even in the car. If you are hunting dozens of caches a day like some numbers junkies do then I think the PDA is a way to go. I don't see much use for it if you are like me who only do two or three at the most in a day. My printer does both sides so I can print one cache per page.
  7. There are ways around the no adult material guideline. One multi cache that is very well done that I am currently working on offered a beer or age appropriate beverage to the first to find. The cache owner would hook up and buy you one in his area. No it is not the same as opening a cache and finding something cool but you could put pictures of the swag in the cache and make traders put pictures of the items they want to trade in the cache. Then they bring the picture of the item they want and the trade item that matches the picture they left to you in person. That has the added bonus of forcing fair trade. It has the down side of you having to meet everyone who wants a trade. Though I don't know that I would want to meet you to pick up the XXX DVD I wanted. Unless you are a 25 year old female swim suite model.
  8. Im sorry, but your statement is made from ignorance and is only meant to incite a hostile response. The question that has to be asked is how much police protection do you want? Here in NC the average Police salary is around 30-36K a year. That does not include equipment, vehicle, gas, and the hundred other things needed to "serve and protect". ( New York average salary is 110K a year, learned when I went to help with 9/11 clean-up) Multiply that by the number of officers you want to have on the street. Remember, you need coverage 24/7/365, and don't think you can go half staff on Holidays, they are busier than regular days. I am not a police officer but do work for 3 different departments (two townships and one city) as a consultant. I have to agree with Crazy H on this one. It is all about enforcing the laws that make the most money first. Anything else takes a back seat. It is interesting that now both the criminals and police are dependent on drug money. As for those actors rights you are trying not to violate don't worry that pesky bill of rights is going away in the name of national security. To clean up the area you have to report it. Don't assume the police know about it. If no action is taken be a squeaky wheel. Is the local police chief up for reelection? A letter to the editor in the newspaper might be in order.
  9. Until your neighbor downloads kiddy porn and they trace it back to your IP address. Actually having an open WAP is an excellent defense to a RIAA file sharing or other similar law suite. It was not me but someone using my connection. If Comcast and their fellow thieves have their way they want it make it illegal for anyone to offer free Internet via wireless. Some cities have done this and it cuts into Comcast profits. Let your congressperson know you want local communities to be able to make their own decisions and not have choices limited by special interest.
  10. You found the cache and signed the log. I say that is a . I also think it is great that you care enough to look for guidance.
  11. I think 3. It is not about the numbers at least for us.
  12. I guess I have not been reading the forums enough because I have no read any serious discussions on this subject. I would call the police and make a complaint. Enough people complain and they will clean up the area either with increased patrols or some sting operations. Though I can see the appeal of sex in the great out doors I would think they could pick a more secluded spot.
  13. It sounds interesting. I read on their website it is kind of like a IP conference call you can moderate. I'm am not sure I have 5 hours of geocaching subjects to discuss but I would try it.
  14. Peer pressure and open discussion is what will put an end to logging DNFs as a find. Emailing the cacher will only send the message to the cheat that they can't cheat on this persons caches. Discussing it here sends the message that it is wrong to log any cache they did not find. It has the added bonus of letting new cachers know how the game is intended to be played and helps all of us stay honest. Obviously you don't get it. It is not right to log a find if you DNFed. It doesn't matter what the owner says or thinks. You found it and signed the log or you didn't. That is not a glib remark. It really is that simple. Or these great 4000 find popular cachers could have logged a DNF and avoided this embarrassment too. You are blaming the wrong person for this one.
  15. So they don't have time to give permits but they have time to hike out to the cache and pick them up and email the owners and... Seems like they have selective time to me.
  16. I have a 650 V-Strom. It is a Dual Sport motorcycle that is great on pavement but also very good on dirt and fire roads. Being 70Hp and capable of 110mph it is also my daily commuter. A Givi trunk works perfect to carry gear or lock up helmets. Best of all it gets 50 mpg. BTW July 19th is ride to work day.
  17. When they hit Today's Cacher it wasn't our webmaster's fault, it was the fault of the hosting company. They not only hacked our site but everyone else that was on the hosting company's server. We finally had to change hosting companies. The good thing was that they didn't mess with our data. El Diablo What you have pointed out is extremely common; much of the security of a website really depends upon the security measures employed by the hosting company, regardless of whether the site is hosted on a shared server or on dedicated servers. It is true I assumed your webmaster and hosting company was the same. Either way someone was not on top of things.
  18. Your webmaster is not keeping up on his security updates or has a poor password policy. Even 0-day hacks have a fix right away. Once they are in you have little choice but to wipe clean and reinstall. Since you don't know how long it was compromised even a backup may not be safe.
  19. Agreed. Best hat ever and it makes you look like an adventurer. And besides only the most interesting people wear a Tilly.
  20. One wonders in 50 years if it will be worth anything. Right now it is not worth $7500 to anyone.
  21. Actually, challenging something you weren't there to see and know nothing about seems a bit disrespectful to me. Why don't you instead find out who was there (about a dozen well-respected geocachers), how it was done and if anyone attending the funeral even had an idea it was being done before condemning it? Pictures were posted, it's been discussed at events and over many geocacher's campfires, yet you are the first to find fault with it. Make that the second.
  22. No do not ban micros. I went to a very interesting spot this last weekend that was a micro. One of those beautiful places fairly close to home that I never knew existed. If you are in it for the numbers you don't care where the cache is. OTOH if you are looking for historical or scenic places then it is your responsibility to read the cache pages and go to the most interesting ones. So I only do one to three caches a day but I decided after the first couple of finds that quality was better than quantity. One hint: If you find a historical or scenic cache that is interesting you can bet that hider has more interesting caches. If you find a lame parking lot micro then that hider will likely have many more lame micros. As for the lamest cache? I don't mind being rude. The peer pressure is good for the sport. It was a light pole off the highway that truckers pulled off to rest. The area was littered with gallon milk jugs full of trucker urine. Why anyone would hide any thing there was beyond me. This was the point where I decided that it was worth the time to read cache pages and search out the historical and scenic places. So how about some peer pressure? Put your real feelings in the logs and don't try to be so nice. Let other cachers know this site has nothing to offer except a cache. Maybe a new acronym? NTOEAC
  23. Nice job. Very tastefully done. Thank goodness you didn't add midi musak to it. One thing I don't get is the background images. You can't really see them (except the edges of the page) and they must load slow for people on dialup. I checked in both IE and Firefox so it is not the browser. Am I missing something with the background images?
