  1. I'd be interested in helping out as well. As for showing off the fact that most of us care about the environment more than the average camper - I run a small commercial outdoor education program for public schools and homeschoolers ... we teach low impact and ecology along with camping, backpacking and basic survival skills. Check out http://www.intrepidjourneys.com - you can feel free to referance that site as well. -- kit "We are healthy only to the extent that our ideas are humane." --Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

    Indy cachers?

Indy Diver sez: I didn't think it was that hard when I placed it but you might give The Pinnacle Cache a try. Will do. My arm's healing pretty fast now, so I'll be back in shape for a challenge in no time. So... how hard was it, Metagrrl? Indy cachers?

Sorry I haven't been back in a while - my attention span on online forums is pretty fickle. Metagrrl sez: What's up with this? I'm away from the forums for a couple of days, and you guys go and steal my cache ideas! That's really funny - not only was I planning to place a cache on the KT, but I was also considering a chain of small caches along the whole length of it, as soon as school gets out and I have the free time to hike it. The idea was that it would be like the sign-in stations on the Appalachian Trail, and thru hikers could have a lot of fun reading about the adventures of the people who went before them. There's several other long-distance hiking trails in Indiana - I've also considered placing something on the new Tecumseh trai. Anyhow - let me know when you go out. If you're settled on doing a chain, I'll make sure and set up the one cache that I definitely want. I let you know the approx. location so it doesn't interfere with yours. No sense having a bunch of caches all close together on such a long trail as the KT! "We are healthy only to the extent that our ideas are humane." --Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
  5. Bassoon Pilot sez: It is grossly unfair, however, to insinuate that because an individual has acquired a high number of finds that they only do easy caches. Yes indeed. I really agree with that. From the reading and from my own (very tiny) experience in the game, it seems to me that all that kinda runs counter to the spirit of the whole thing anyway. It's not really an inherently competitive sport, as far as I can tell. Besides, people should take into account the fact that most players will go after all the caches that are close to their location - and if they are in a place like me (Indiana), they've only got a few difficult caches to choose from. I certainly hope people aren't out there looking at my profile, and judging me by my cache count (Especially since the account I post from is only for discussion, my girlfriend and I Geocache together, so we post our finds from a shared account). I certainly wouldn't think to do that to someone else. That strikes me as... no fun! The thing I like about Geocaching is connecting with all those people who came before and after me, and linking them to an interesting location in my mind. 7. I'm astounded at how "stuck in the game" geocachers can be. Most people don't know the word "geocache." Most people don't know a thing about the sport. If you place a cache in a densely populated area, you have to expect this sort of thing to happen. People are alarmed by strange people dropping off strange packages in crowded areas. (I think I'm going to make that sentence my .sig) They're not likely to spend much time investigating something that may or may not be dangerous. We can't expect them to. Look at it this way - if you have kids attending a school, wouldn't you want the school principal to take reports of someone dropping off a strange package near that school very very seriously? I would. It's standard procedure to call the police in these cases. Once the police get called, it becomes a black mark for Geocachers and Geocaching. Every time it happens, it'll be one step closer to having our sport banned in urban areas. For heaven's sake, alert the powers that be when you place a Geocache. If they won't let you, don't place it! I for one would like to practice this sport without being hampered by local ordinances! -- Kit (Team KITandSHAE) "We are healthy only to the extent that our ideas are humane." --Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

    Indy cachers?

At any rate, I decided to hide some caches like I'd want to hunt. I've been enjoying the easy and urban caches, but it's time to do more. quote:It is in some of the roughest country around here. No kidding! I've had more than my fair share of close calls out there. Let's just say I've learned that you've really got to carry a LOT of water there in the summer! quote:Is the Pixely Knob cache on the KT? Hmm. The trail crosses Pixely Knob between the New Chapel and Jackson Trailheads, but I don't think it actually goes up Pixely Knob. I could be wrong, a lot of those hills look the same after crossing 10 of them in a day. I'm going to have to go get that cache sometime! quote: Let's knock ourselves out! I can't wait to go out on the KT again. I broke my arm really badly earlier this month - so I haven't been doing any difficult hiking lately. But I'm champing at the bit to take a long, long walk. Hopefully when I heal up a bit, a couple caches will appear later this spring. -- Kit (Team KITandSHAE) "We are healthy only to the extent that our ideas are humane." --Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
  9. quote:A sealed PVC container in the woods would not scare me (even before I knew about geocaching). But then again, I think before I act. No, and a sealed PVC container in the woods would not scare me either. Not one bit. But these containers aren't controvertial in woodland areas - people seem to be most concerned about containers in urban areas. I'm a school administrator by trade. If I saw any stranger depositing a strange package very close to my building or to one of our playgrounds, frankly I'd be concerned. I'd also be tempted to not screw around with it until professionals could be called in to look at it. I'm certainly not going to go poking at it with a stick to see if it has a label or a phone number on it. Maybe it's not a bomb, but maybe it is. Schools have bomb scares, public buildings get bombed. It's a fact of life. It may not happen often, but why take chances when there are lives at stake. When people are responsible for safe guarding the lives of others, I think they can be excused for having the occasional "knee-jerk reaction". Not every school administrator or building supervisor knows every possible form that a bomb might take. The GeoCaching community needs to not take an adversarial position when it comes to this issue - we need to work out ways to deal with officials that allows us to practice our sport in away that makes no one feel threatened. And frankly, it's OUR responsibility to do that, and to bend over backwards to do it. WE are the strange people placing strange packages all over the world. 10. I don't know about my find count - I'm new to the sport and I've only done a handful of easy caches. There aren't many difficult caches near me, but I'm thinking I'll derive more satisfaction from completing a few really hard caches that require lots of time and preperation and thought then hundreds of easy ones. I suppose I probably think of each cache as an individual game with its own intrinsic rewards. - Kit (Team KITandSHAE) "We are healthy only to the extent that our ideas are humane." --Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

  12. Labeling a container with the word "GeoCache" is going to be meaningless to most. I just found out about this sport a couple months ago, I'd never heard the word before that. And, if people think something might be a bomb, they're going to call the cops and not spend a ton of time pouring over the device for clues or labels. Would you handle some random device if you suspected it might contain a bomb? I said it in another thread - strange people placing strange packages in public places is sure to be noticed, and it is sure to cause people concern. And rightfully so! Bomb squads cost money, and everytime a bomb squad gets sent out - it's money out of the taxpayer's pocketbook. If it becomes a problem (I'm not saying it is a problem yet), eventually somebody will pass an ordinance and then the fun is over. I don't think the "geocaching lobby" in any particular city is going to be strong enough to block legislation, so why not do some simple things to prevent it from happening? Many ideas have already been mentioned in this thread. "We are healthy only to the extent that our ideas are humane." --Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
  13. I've only been on a few finds so far, but I have to say that without the logs the experience wouldn't be the same for me. I like to think that reading the logs gives me a sense of connection to the place I've found and to the people who have been there before me. Also, in a very practical way, it helps me get aquainted with the cachers in my area. I've already recognized a few names over and over in the log, and it's lots of fun to read them and say to my partner - "Oh, this is from so-and-so" And the practice of finding and trading small personal tokens and signing a log seems to me to say something about the sport - that it's not just about finding hidden treasure, but about trading thoughts and pieces of yourself with all the people to come. I'm new, but I'm addicted! -- Kit (Team KITandSHAE) "We are healthy only to the extent that our ideas are humane." --Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
