  1. May I offer the following additional symptom: Rather than visit your local garage you hope that GC64CF contains that wiper wheel box that will assist with driving in the rain! All the best EAP
  2. I must say I agree with almost everything tha MCL has said on this. On other thought: I read in one of the other threads about people who log pylon numbers. Now I don't know if they have a database of numbers on the web or if any virtuals use these numbers but how are we to treat these?
  3. Not having found many caches I don't think I can speak with a dregree of authority, however we spent two weekends on Treasure Island and are having to call in favours to get the boat needed to finish it, so I guess we like a challenge. Having said that a nice location with a good walk makes the time seem well spent. There is a case to be made for caches close to the major roads and car parks.... travel bugs would move much quicker but overall it's the excuse to get out into the countryside that I enjoy the most. On the subject of TB's is there a TB drop box in a motorway service station? Regards EAP
  4. quote:Originally posted by Omally: quote:1) The speed readout on my GIII+ is about 8% low. I don't know why this but it's the same in mph or km/h.2) Make sure you turn the logging off if there is any chance you may exceed the posted speed limit. Vehicle speedo's are normally calibrated toa higher level, thus making you think you're going faster than you really are. Formula one race teams use GPS to calibrate speedometers... go figure! Of course, there's no telling what level the police calibrate their Gatso's to, so best to not risk using yer GPS in court! It's a tradition, or an old charter or something... I was more concerned about creating evidence that could be used against me in court I'm not sure about the speedo being calibrated low, I find the same error on the bike, or in a range of cars. There are some vascar markers hear abouts and one day I'll go out with a stop watch and run a proper test. All the best. EAP
  5. No caches logged this weekend.... but a maintenance check on our local cache and many hours spent checking out possible locations and clues for a new Norfolk Cache. After the comments about Forest Enterprise and Cache contents I'm think this may have been a waste of time. EAP
  6. Try Gartrip. This allows the entry of way points in GP Grid and will convert to Lat/Long. The mapping and traklog function is very good. There is free download version that has limited saving, but unlimited GPSr upload/download, and it is very cheap to register. When cacheing we tend to scan a map of the cache site, then print this at high resolution (1:11500 or so) with cache location shown. To be honest some of caches we could have done with just this pintout and the description, however for sites like Holkham Haul you need the GPSr as there are no destinctive features. All the best EAP
  7. quote:: I've already ordered one, should be here tomorrow, hopefully. The deciding factor was the nothing to do with geocaching. The speedo on my ol' Honda has fallen apart and a new one is astronomically expensive This thing will sit nicely under the fairing screen on it's velco stuff and give me a real-time accurate mph reading. It'll be easily removeable and I should be able to hardwire a plug into the bike's electrics. I'll still be able to use it for lunch-box hunting, of course. John John, I've used my Garmin III+ on my bike for a number years and the map and track logs are great. A lap of the Nürburgring ring in Germany was awesome. If you get a copy of GarTrip you can play back your route overlaid on a map with live speed read out. Two things to watch though: 1) The speed readout on my GIII+ is about 8% low. I don't know why this but it's the same in mph or km/h. 2) Make sure you turn the logging off if there is any chance you may exceed the posted speed limit. Take care EAP
  8. I would endorse the recomendation of Gartrip. I've used it to plot cache locations before field trips and to record transects when undertaking wildlife surveys. The former is propably cheating the latter is very usefull. It's worth recording a few key waypoints and then plotting these on the map. You can then join the dots rather than have to walk every road. Regards EAP
  9. Has anybody visited any of the UK Lat/Long confluences? See:Confluence Project for more information. One of the last outsanding confluences is 53N 1E which unfortunately is under water Streetmap It so happens that Good Friday this year coincides with one of the lowest tides of the year and I am planning to see how close we can get to the confluence. If any other geocachers were thinking of being in Norfolk for Easter you are welcome to join us at the Beach carpark north of Cley. As both "Holkham Haul(GC1984)& "The Coast Road Kelling" (GC26F2) are near by you have the chance to bag a confluence and two caches in one day. If anyone is interested let me know and well sort out times etc. EAP
  10. We are Sue and Ewan AKA "Suan" and have mainly (only) logged caches in Norfolk but are looking to break out into Cambridgeshire and Suffolk.
