To get the on topic stuff out of the way: A lot of people skip over the pdas for maping and go straight to laptops, running nzmapped, tumonz or maptoaster topo (to name the ones I can remamber) Don't forget Pavlova, Moro bars the mince pie and of course Marmite (an aquired taste I'll agree).... sniff sniff can't beat their fish and chips either....

Whoa! You thumped that wall rather hard! Maybe they should post up those pics at the top to remind others what happens at the sort of crazy (and ya gotta agree with me here) speeds that people go down that hill (me being one). Any idea what speed you were doing? Best of luck in the recovery. (PS: Unfortunately we live in a world where not everyone is genuine (how many Scam/Spam emails do you get a day?) - I've been told so many stories from people wanting money while travelling overseas - We've all come to realise how completely screwed one would be if it were actually genuine ).

I think that the problem we have is that it ends up being rather expensive by the time it gets to the cachers hands in NZ. Be sure to post this in the www.gps.org.nz forum as well, that's where most of us seem to be hanging out these days.

Snoop the mod is probably in more of a position to help you out here but I guess that it's something that shows up beside one's own username to let us know if we've been bad and should be sent for a "time out" or just a good old fashioned spanking. Heck, the threat of that's gotta scare most into line...

I just realised that I don't see a post from me in the earlier stage of this forum. I've been into this caching gambit for nearly two years now. Ohhh the places it's lead me to..... I often wonder what a tree would look like showing who got who involved but it seems like quite a few of you read about or saw it on tv. I blame Friends/Colleagues of mine - nandor & parapunter for my fuel bill and all the extra gadgets I've "just had to have". I was hooked before I'd even been out caching with Nandor.... As someone else mentioned it's perfect for a gadget person who's looking for reasons to get out more. I've got lost in the dark (more than once ), got wet and muddy (Thanks Gav ), found just about every blackberry bush (Thanks BigNick ).... Can't wait to get back out there....

Personal Privacy And Security
swanny replied to Spike's Mum and Dad's topic in General geocaching topics
Ok. Since my user name was mentioned at the top of this post. I'll claim which posts were mine and comment on each. Not completely ex-kiwi, I'm coming back! As with a lot of my posts there is generally an attempt to be humourous. Yep, looking back, with 2020 vision it wasn't a good idea to post a link to the whitepages website (btw it doesn't allow reverse directory like I've seen on some US directories). It was never my intention that someone turn up at the cachers' door, although, my bad it could be interpreted that way from the original post. This was me realising that there are quite a few other cachers that I haven't met yet - although making a mental note that I'd like to try for another caching event to meet some more. I've met a few of the Christchurch geocachers and they genuinely are a decent bunch. Finally, I'll steal a part of a comment from someone else: I guess we took the game of hiding and finding too far. For this I'll add my appology. Brendon, Jena, Germany. -
I'd be keen enough, but aren't living in NZ just at the moment. I'll post a link in our nz gps forum.

There's gotta be about 50 million. If you're the placer thats half the fun coming up with places to hide the cache. In Stockholm they have many microcaches hidden in very public places, makes for an interesting hunt!

Connecting Garmin Etrex to Tumonz `1.9 on laptop with only USB ports
swanny replied to NZWide's topic in New Zealand
I have a usb-serial adapter that works fine with XP Home and a gps. When you say "doesn't work" what does it do/have you tried? They tend to change com port number, not to mention use higher com numbers when you use different usb ports. Try setting the gps to output nmea and then open hyperterminal to see what comes out. With 4800, 8N1 (most garmin units) you should see a whole bunch of data coming in... -
I wondered what had happeded there - why it didn't have any mention of the cache being in Dunedin. I'll delete it tomorrow. Once a cache is discovered by the program it doesn't look at it again. This isn't a fault of the program, it's by design - an attempt to minimise hits on geocaching.com A bit of a pain it got shifted really, I might have been able to get the Dunedin pic in a few weeks Thanks BaldEd for figuring that one out .

Took me quite a while to find this cache . I initially thought that the software that generates the pages was at fault . While getting ready to debug my way through the code I looked at several caches in the area, (there's quite a few new caches in the South Island that I hadn't even noticed before ) to see where it should have been drawn. I eventually found it, it is there, but it's very well hidden amongst the caches in Dunedin, near another cache called Unity Park.

Don't forget the sherper team to carry all that stuff...

It wasn't even that amusing standing on the pile of tailings above the carpark area talking on the cellphone. Nothing hacks me off more than decrypting "There is no clue". Clues should very much be a case of if you can't say something useful don't say anything. When it's really really hot/pouring with rain and you've been searching for, what seems like hours humour isn't apreiciated. I try and segment my clues, with them getting more and more detailed.

Been there, done that (more than once), although not quite as epic. Even with 20W of halogen I still got lost. I've upgraded to 50 now, taking that whenever it looks like getting dark and I've always got the maglite in the bag, next to the cellphone.

I'm all for making cachers think a bit when looking for caches, unfortunately setting up caches like that takes much time and planning. I've got all these grand plans for caches I'd like to place, but just haven't had the time to set aside for it.... As for caches in NZ, some of them are pretty straight forward - these one's are generally urban caches. There are some about that take people to some pretty interesting spots.
-
Dang. it's a long way from Christchurch, 5 or 6 hours I suppose - each way . Heres the cache Watching the Dark (Southland). I see that theres been people down that way lately too.

In good time Nick, in good time...

Just checked out those coords on topomap. That place looks easily accessible, or at least a spot within 1km of there. (Looks like the precise coords are on someone's property)
-
Well, this was a post referring to the centre of north island cache but I see thats actually already been mentioned. 10km from Dog Kennel corner could land you completely in the middle of nowhere however.... I'll take a look at the coords.
-
Yeah I've got awsome memories of the view and some really good photos taken from both of those places myself (good wallpaper to stare at on those longer days at work). Tasman lookout was darn cold the day I went there though.... I'll have to have more of a think about my favorite though (I can see a look at the 'done' list coming)....

Development of Open Source GPS/Mapping/GIS software
swanny replied to rediguana's topic in New Zealand
This may be getting a bit off topic, but.... I guess this would be what you're looking for:Trimble Lasson SQ Pretty cool stuff (not sure about the $$$), I think that gps and camera integration must be just around the courner. You can already get CF- GPS adapters. I guess it's only a matter of time before a camera manufacturer decides to support it. -

Hey, they do look pretty cool, good for places where you don't want/need anything fancy. Might look into getting one. When/where are we going to see some pics?

Hey, since everyone else is in on the action I thought I'd chip in too: Fujifilm 2800z USB - shows up as a removable drive, can copy anything using explorer. (but I think that it still uses drivers?). My main emphasis was to get a decent zoom (it's my only camera so I needed to try and cover all bases) so I went with 2MP (rather than less zoom more MP). Teamed up with a set of 4 NiMH AA's (NiMH is the only way to go for AA's ) and 128MB smart media it's served me well , 6+ months so far. Along with dpreview (lots of detail) Steve's Digicams provides some pretty good input too. Finally, a quick note to digicam users: I found out that one should format their mem cards in the camera semi-regularly as my file system became corrupted (possibly low batt situation or a result of letting XP near it ).
