  1. Sounds like maybe putting a TB hotel on a highway exit/entrance ramp might be a ideal place... or really close by. To go to my house, you have to take a few different roads to get to it..... that and I am not sure if my wife would be happy with complete strangers showing up and dropping stuff....
  2. I have a no name USB to serial adapter for my laptop. While it wont work with my data cable for my PRO-95 scanner, it works fine for the Magellan GPS cable. Just make sure that when you install the adapter, go in and change the port that it assigns. The USB-Serial adapters can go into COM port ranges that most software doesnt use. Setting it to the usual COM 1-4 will let it work... (I use my cable for Mapsend, Netstumbler, Microsoft Streets & Trips 2005/2006.)
  3. When I had borrowed this unit from friend in September of last year, I upgraded the firmware for him. The firmware was for the Sportrak Pro.... and it boots up as a sportrak pro.... but the map says marine..... As long as it doesn't interfere with caching or benchmarking....
  4. I wouldn't put restrictions or bogus rules on them. If you want to take two bugs, take em... you want to take one and not leave one.. thats fine.... While it would be suggested, it would not be required. I live in a small neighborhood, so people stopping at my house at random might be upsetting to neighbors. (Calling the cops on cachers..) There is a cache located about 1/4 mile from my house. Thought about setting up a hotel there, next to it. I am also about 2-3 miles from I-95... I could set a cache around one of the two exits I am near. I am still working on the idea. I picked up a couple of watertight plastic containers from Wal-Mart the other day. A little camo paint/tape, and they would make perfect cache containers....
  5. I was thinking about creating a Travel Bug hotel or depository (depending on what you want to call it). Since a lot of people go through a lot of trouble to get travel bugs moving, I was thinking about creating one based from my house. However, not sure if anyone would want to come to someone's house to drop or pick up a TB... However, thought about placing a cache somewhere off of I-95 so people could drop and pick up TB's.... Question is, how does one start a TB hotel? How does one seed it? I just got my TB in the mail the other day (hanging from the rear view mirror in my van right now till I decide what to do with it), so I could start it off in my future hotel... Any help?
  6. I was writing down some critical info on my Sportrak Pro, and noticed that for the basemap, it lists... NA.Marine - 1.05 I have the 5.34 firmware update on this unit. Is there a way to put the regular basemap on here, or is this a result of the 5.34 firmware?
  7. I was hunting a cache this morning, and saw a cop drive by the site on the other side of the canal. About 5 min later, here comes said cop. He immeadatley asked for my drivers license, and my registration for my motorcycle. I handed this info to him, and he asked me what I was doing in the woods... My first thought was to tell him I have a stash of illegal immigrants and I was coming to make sure they haven't escaped their cages. I quickly dismissed that idea.... I told him what I was doing and about Geocaching. He sounded interested and asked me for the website. Maybe he's checkin up on me, maybe he will join...
  8. I was on my way down to a cache in Scottsmoor, and also decided to load some benchmarks into my GPS. I would pass one on the GPS, and find no marker, no nothing. The only things I would find were concrete poles, about 2' high, that looks like they had a sign screwed into them, but the signs are no longer there. I did come across one marker, but the BM measured out to be in the middle of a retention pond! Any ideas?
  9. I actually used my i830 to find my first cache. I had the coordinates written down on a peice of paper and just used the built in GPS system to find where I was going..... Granted they are not very accurate, but it's a start.
  10. I just wanted to add that a lot of cell phones are now including a form of GPS (A-GPS). My Motorola i870 (Nextel) has it, along with most other Nextel phones. I know some newer Sprint phones have them as well. It would be a way for someone to get into Geocaching w/o having to buy a more expensive GPSr. Like I was told about paintball. I was handed a pump, single-shot, CO2 cartridge powered paintball gun for my first try, and was told "If you get aggervated using this gun, then you will like the sport. If you can get used to it, maybe it's not for you." The same could apply for GC.
  11. I have a usb to serial converter as well, and if you go to your Device Manager, open the properites for the adapter, and select Port Settings, and then Advanced.. It should give you a way to change what port you use. Keep in mind this is with a Prolific USB-Serial adapter under Windows XP Pro SP2. Most adapters set a high port so it will not conflict with any devices like mice or modems.. You can set it down as long as you adapter supports it.
  12. I have Directroute for my Sportrak Pro. I take the .loc files from GC and convert them to Mapsend format w/ a .wpt extension using GPSBabel. Works for me, and the cache name transfers over as well....
  13. I went on a hunt today for a new power cord for my "new" Magellan Sportrak Pro GPSr. I searched the web for one, and the cheapest I could find for an "Genuine" Magellan cord was $15... I found one on WestMarine's page for $12, and I called the local store and they said they had em. So I went up there. Nope, sure dont.... Ended up at Circuit City.... Saw two of them on the shelf, with a price tag of $1.96. I asked the guy if it was wrong.. he checked it and said "Yes, it is wrong... It's $1.52...." I bought both of them!!!
