  1. This thread is clearly emotive - I've not seen such a big response on this forum for years! Seems to me it would be constructive for someone to start a Feedback thread asking Groundspeak to force people to write something on a phone app log. If enough people add a vote to that then they may eventually realise how important the logs are to the game as a whole and change the app. Even if its only TFTC, at least by forcing someone to type something you end up jogging the brain into realising that a log is an integral part of the game. A blank log serves little purpose. The way the app is geared up you could start playing the game and never even realise that sending a blank log was a bit of a faux pas - is that the fault of the finder or rather the app designer?
  2. There's loads along the Monarch Way. Below is a link to the first one as the series hasn't been bookmarked by anyone. Monarch Way #1
  3. Completely agree with you there. The percentage ratio really helps pick out those hidden gems. It would be fab to be able to search according to favourites-to-finds percentage.
  4. They're an electrical chain store SP - not many in the UK but there are some dotted around. Don't know any cachers that work in one though!
  5. I allocate to any cache that I feel deserves one. Have 100 in reserve still though. I find the system really useful and when I go somewhere new I always sort local caches by favourite points so that I know which are the 'must do' caches in an area.
  6. Some can take a very long time. I remember one in Norwich city centre which went for over a year before it was found. No doubt there are others out there have have gone for even longer before FTF.
  7. Honestly I don't think you'd be disappointed if you plumped for either the Oregon or the 62. Both are excellent units. One has a more compact design and touchscreen, the other is slightly more accurate owning to the external aerial... Go and play with them in a shop (places like Cotswold usually have both on display) and choose based on what you like best - buttons or touchscreen.
  8. As does the oregon. Been using ours as car sat navs for over 18 months. It lacks voice direction, but it routes on road and beeps when a direction change comes up and you get nice clear instructions and diagram on screen. Personally I'd use the difference in money to get an oregon plus discoverer maps....
  9. £100? About 20 sets of rechargables? LOL! It does look very nice, but as it doesn't offer much more than the orgeon, I wont be upgrading any time soon.....
  10. It's all Groundspeak cache listings, so your home coords don't come in to it. You're currently rated 1639th. Looks like your last few finds haven't registered yet(there's a little bit of a lag). Surprised to see I'm only just outside the top 500. Now there's incentive to go out and find some boxes!
  11. The concept of TB graveyards was put to bed some years back. These days you just mark them as missing on the TB page
  12. Yep same as me- 1.6. Thinking about it more sensibly this morning though, the problem could be because I have a QVGA screen. Is your phone also QVGA? The QVGA screen meant it was ages before I could get the official GSK geocaching app as it wasn't supported. I wonder if WhereYouGo is the same?
  13. Feeble excuse - you're clearly not trying hard enough. PDA in your left hand, wildfire in your right and dangle your oregon caribiner off your big toe while you hop the whole route
  14. I'm having the same problem. No joy with Market, AppBrain or scanning the barcode on the website. Him indoors just tried with his work phone which has a newer version of Android and he accessed it right way. So although the app says WhereYouGo is available for all versions of android, I'm speculating that's not actually true. Do you know what version of android you're running? Edit:typos
  15. You have one of the best Garmin caching GPS's available - surprised to hear you describe it as limited lol! For phones, you can use almost any smart phone including the HTC Wildfire but you will need to download and install the relevant app. Some of these apps are.... Android - WhereYouGo iphone - PiGo Blackberry - Openwig No idea about Windows phone I also can't comment on how good any of these apps are as I use my Oregon for wherigos.
  16. There's hope for other trackables then! Great to see a coin back in circulation.
  17. I guess that would be down to the NW lot to orgainise. Although traditionally the current event committee have generally assisted with finding a location as they know the area better, it would still be down to the NW to want to do it. We still have a little while to go before July - things like this might still be in the planning stages for all we know. It's worked well in the past though, so would be nice to see something similar this year too.
  18. I thought film pots in ivy covered trees were bad enough, but nanos in the grass - grrr!
  19. I had been thinking exactly the same, I'm sure that we've all seen areas around caches trashed, particularly in the FTF frenzy when first placed. Sadly not all cachers are respectful of their environment Agree. We are representative of society of a whole, so the majority of us are responsible, but there will be a minority who are not. I've seen some places totally trashed by cachers and given the nature and location of the damage it can only have be cachers too. It's sad to see, but it does happen. On this occasion I would suspect that the damage is not done by a cacher - it looks more like straight forward vandalism to me, but none of us can categorically say that. I think you've done the right thing in removing the cache and I would hold off a few weeks and see before deciding to replace, move or archive.
  20. Being discussed here......on main forum....and in theFeedback section
  21. You're right Birdie..... I agree with both Morsix and Briansnat (whoever they are!) and think publishing a better cache hiding ethos would be a great idea. Briansnat is quoted on the Guidelines, but judging from many questions we get on these forums, I suspect lots of hiders are guilty of not reading them properly or even at all (despite ticking the box that says they have when they submit a cache). Something on cache pages might well be the visible prompt that we need to ensure that caches are not put out just for the sake of it, but actually reward the finder with something other than a smiley.
  22. I have to say the 35mm film pot puts me off too. Everyone on here who knows me know I hate them at the best of times and will drive right by them - solving a puzzle wouldn't make me any more inclined to find one! That's just me though, and lots of people aren't bothered by container. I don't mind micros necessarily - they have their purpose, but film pots have become my pet hate lol!! Puzzles rely on reputation at lot of the time. There are some fab puzzle cache setters near me who the minute you see one of their caches published you start working on it as you know the cache is going to be something special or clever. As this is your first puzzle it will take a while for reputation to spread and for your name to be known. Keep with it - if your puzzles are good then people will find out about you word will spread, but this will take time. Maybe even years. You can't judge a good puzzle by a matter of weeks
  23. Yes - managed to loose a lid to strong winds! I emailed the owner but also posted in my log (I was FTF and clearly a whole stream of cachers would soon notice and comment!) Offered to replace it, but owner was very understanding and he replaced it himself. No!
  24. Depends on the cache for me. A nano in the middle of town that's tricky cause of muggles - ignore. A cache that's miles from anywhere and hard to get to - challenge. A tricky puzzle that's hard to solve - challenge. This is where favourite points are useful and I do use them to judge caches like this.
  25. The bore is so hard to predict - sometimes the 3* is really quite impressive but the wind and other factors can impact the bore so size can't always be predicted perfectly. Personally if you're coming so far I'd aim for a 4* as it gives you the best opportunity for seeing something decent. That probably means waiting until next spring now though unfortunately
