  1. Anywhere there are no muggles. Much less stressful.
  2. It's too bad that the tags are as expensive as they are. If we flooded the caches with bugs they might become less attractive to thieves.
  3. And what fun there would then be in discovering and moving TBs? I once found three photocopied geocoins in a cache and because I didn't like the idea at all, my "revenge" was to place them in very remote caches that are visited extremely infrequently. None of the three have moved ever since. Can't resist this one. You just proved my point. You were not tempted to keep them but still moved them. Not everyone would go to that much trouble to leave them in remote caches.
  4. When we go on a geo holiday we go to a different area to cache. We usually camp so that's cheaper. Caching takes us to see things we wouldn' see unless we were looking for caches so in that sense you learn more about an area than you might if you just did the 'usual' things all tourists do in an area. And visiting caches is free so it is much cheaper than paying for local tours etc.
  5. I knew I was doing something wrong: 1) I Find Them 2) I Photograph them 3) I released the photo Alright I am just kidding, I do not do that!!!!! The reason I said that thought is because I have seen that done. I went to a cache the other day and inside was a baseball card holder that had a picture of a jeep, on the side of the Jeep they photoshoped the TB number so it could be logged. So someone took the picture released the picture and kept the Jeep. That is just so......wrong. Oh well.....folks are very strange ... n'est pas? I'm thinking that we should all just photograph our tb's and tags and send out just the photo. Much easier to replace and not nearly so collectable. And there would be so many more tbs in caches to find 'cause they wouldn't get stolen.
  6. And if the cache was supposed to have a bug or two and they weren't there you wouldn't place it in that cache. Both of my two bugs to go missing were placed by new cachers in caches that had other bugs listed but MIA. I'm not real sure how you are going to track bugs/coins have gone missing unless you really know the history of the cache in question. I'm sure you all know the history on many, but considering the thousands of caches out there, how are you going to follow the rest? My question to you willstew is, are you going to continue to release bugs? I'm not trying to make a point, that's a straight forward question. Just curious. In the current situation is it worth your costs and efforts? The onus has to be mostly on the cache owner to put the warning on their cache if bugs go missing. But you know as someone else stated if bugs were only logged out of caches then at least they wouldn't be listed on the cache pages and it would make collecting a lot harder. As for releasing more tbs - I don't think so. I've never released any geocoins but after a year of caching I wouldn't even consider it after seeing how THEY go missing. Better to send out laminated paper copies that no one would bother to steal - still trackable but not so tempting.
  7. And if the cache was supposed to have a bug or two and they weren't there you wouldn't place it in that cache. Both of my two bugs to go missing were placed by new cachers in caches that had other bugs listed but MIA.
  8. Did you pick ugly bugs? Do you really belive that collectors are only after the bug? Without the tag it's not a TB - how it's fastened on is irrelevant I think. I don't believe that cachers don't know what they're picking up when they take a TB. Even a newbie will get it figured out soon enough. In a perfect world TBs would not get stolen and it's not a perfect world. Still, only one poster has commented on whether or not they thought a warning on risky caches would help. We put other atrributes on our caches. And how about not 'officially' listing the presence of bugs and coins in the caches - that would really make collecting harder. Maybe there are just too many collectors out there to vote for that kind of solution....
  9. True. So the onus would be on the bug owner to contact the cache owner if his bug wasn't moving. That would be the only way the bug owner would know that his bug was missing. Although there might be some mention in the logs of bugs being dropped off or picked up.
  10. man would flask hate this post-where did she go? And most of the caches that I visit that are "supposed" to have TB's or GC's in them, don't. That's because the owner hasn't given up hope it will show up again or doesn't know what to do about it. There is a site where you can bury the tb. I had one go missing a few months ago (another cache where there were supposed to be other bugs and there weren't but the cacher left my tb there anyway and it went missing as well.) I just think that some of these caches should have warnings placed - it could be with the owner's permission. As I stated above I wouldn't mind if a warning was put on one of mine if bugs were going missing from it.
  11. I just wonder if in a case where three tbs have gone missing at three separate times that perhaps someone is collecting tbs from that cache. Could it be a muggle? Yes - found it once and said this is neat - goes again - gets some more neat stuff. Could it be a cacher who collects tbs - yes to that as well.
  12. I don't see why people wouldn't visit a cache because there was a symbol warning that bugs and geocoins have gone missing from this cache. I don't just visit caches to place these items. I hate it when bugs and coins go missing from one of my caches and would not mind it at all if a warning was put on that particular cache. Better than archiving it if there hasn't been any other problem with the cache. Probably the stash won't be that great either in such a cache but if that's all you go for then just pick new caches.
  13. Having just discovered that another of my travel bugs has been a victim of a muggled cache I started to think about how some of this could be avoided. If bugs and coins were not listed on the cache page for anyone and everyone to see perhaps there would be fewer go missing. My most recent MIA was placed in a cache where 2 TB's had already gone missing from and the cache was actually trashed after my bug was placed there. I realize that some cachers go to a cache because there's a bug or coin in it (I've done it myself) but do you ever wonder if some people just watch the local cache pages and visit the cache when the pickin' is good? The other thing I wondered about was the possibility of some symbol being placed on a cache page if bugs go missing there regularly - a warning that TB's are not safe there. Perhaps these suggestions have been made before -sorry if that's the case.
  14. We don't have grandchildren but if we did we would take them geocaching so I disagree with you here. In fact I would say that in lots of cases grandparents have more spare time to spend with kids than their parents do. Ever heard that saying "If we'd known that grandchildren could be so much fun we'd of had them first"?http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/style_images/1/folder_post_icons/icon1.gif
  15. Same here - nothing but a grey box. Safari 2.0.3 on OSX 10.4.4. Google maps works other times.
  16. I have selected the autodetect and while watching Mapsend's progress 38400 is not one of the baud rates it checks for. I checked the specs for the 236 and it says NMEA0183 V2.2 so that's likely the problem. We use DeLorme Street Atlas while in the US and it recognises the 236 with no problem. Looks like new software is in order. Thanks for your suggestions.
  17. We purchased a Holux GPSlim 236 bluetooth gps to use with our palm. That seems to be working but we would also like to use it with our lap top for road navigation. We've been using a meridian gold with the laptop but would like to do away with some of the cables. The problem is that Mapsend doesn't seem to recognize the 236 (I think because it doesn't seem to check for the 236's 38400 baud rate) We're thinking we will have to buy new software. Do all new programs have the ability to communicate at the 236's baud rate or???? Bluetooth is working between the laptop and Holux as laptop recognizes the new equipment. Thoughts??? Suggestions???
  18. I knew that if I went away and came back that things would work out. Menu button! We're pretty new at the palm as well so didn't think of that. Things are looking up. Thank you. The older we get the harder it is to learn new tricks.
  19. Just purchased a Holux GPSLim 236 to use with my palm life drive. Read somewhere that GeoNiche was a great program (along with EasyNiche) to use on the palm for communicating with the Holux 236. So I download the trial version (only option until I register it) and transfer it to the palm. I appears in my applications window ok - I tap it to open and all I get is one screen with a compass type configuration that has four buttons which don't seem to do anything and no other option for setup/ prefs or anything. Anyone have experience with this program or suggest another program?
  20. Thank you very much for your help - it was as you said. You've saved what was left of my sanity.
  21. I just recently purchased a palm lifedrive and have been trying to transfer files from gsak to the palm. There are 142 records in gsak - I go EXPORT- Cachemate PDB File -tell it where to find the file in gsak folder (748 kb) - GENERATE. Computer does it's thing and tells me 1 waypoint converted. When I check the hotsync window it tells me the file to be added is only 2kb. Any suggestions?
  22. Thank you for the help. It's much appreciated.
