  1. P.S. Here is my reasoning: I have been using an Outlook PST file for as long as PST files have been around. I archive one simple file and all my contacts and emails are secure within that file.... Fortunately I don't have a new file to deal with every time I add a contact!
  2. I confirmed the same issue. I now believe MapSource is antiquated software that never got updated to match modern Garmin GPS units such as Oregon and 62 series GPS units. In the old days I used to keep all my waypoints in one nice file. I suppose I will now have to adjust to multiple files or keep doing a cut and past to a master waypoint list and re-export it each time to the 62s (by the way also creating a new file name with the import date AnNoYiNg!). What a pain I agree! Yes and I think each new day I go out to make a waypoint will create a new GPX file on my 62s with the date stamp. I'm very annoyed by all this as well. There should be a setting or option to enable/disable auto file name to the waypoint file saving structure on the GPS unit. I suspect a lot of users wanted more flexibility in waypoint management, pressed Garmin and this is how they responded. Blaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh! Good thing you can still manually do the File -> Open when your Garmin GPS unit is set to Serial mode. If you want to keep it simple you don't need to invest time with other GPS softwares or applications unless you desire. You can still do all you need if you like me invested in the MapSource and want to keep your process as lean as possible.
  3. You have left Master locks as items in a cache? Dang where did you leave the last one I could use an new lock hahhaaa... Nice prize if that is what your leaving as a stash. or maybe you ment you left them for caches that had old crapy lock on them for the owner to use as a replacement. Happy Hunting!
  4. Here's an interesting idea. Has any one placed or used a GE Supra push pin "real-estate key box" lock to hide clues or key to the final cache. My goodness substitute door know with tree branch. Insert next clue or waypoint inside. Could make for an extremely difficult multi hunt.
  5. Another thought I think COMBO locks are fun as you can play the numbers game and yes we have numbers to play with when it come to geocashing. Where with keyed locks the cache owner has to continually monitor and possibly replace a physical key. Even under the best of intension people could drop, loose or forget to replace a physical key. On the other hand it kind of give the cache hunt a since of 3D depth where you have to grab this to get that.
  6. Yes the first cache I place was a brand new Pelican box. I found an inexpensive combo bike chain (coated cable) and ran it through the plastic handle of the box and around the tree. One guy thought it was a nice attachment while another thought it was a bit over kill but each to his own. I wasn't so worried about Muggles as much as the cache getting moved away from its spot. Cache is still in good operation I must say.
  7. I have a utility box out in the open with one of those common brass 4 digit Master lock on it. It gets weathered quite a bit in the Greater North West and tends to rust up quickly. So keep an eye on your locks. It might be better to do a little looking around on line or at the local lock smith shop vs. the generic hardware store for a weatherized combo lock. Some times they have rubber jackets around the lock to keep the rain out of them. Just a thought. I kind of like the idea of a puzzle or multi cache ending with a combo lock as part of the task. Hide it well or if Muggles find a locked box they will place a higher value of the inside contents and may walk off with the cache.
  8. The pepper spray ( more for attacking anamils ) ( check your local regulations before ) and the "buddy system" are proably the two most appropiate methods in my opinion. As well just because your on the trail take your mobile phone and or HAM / Family Band / 2-way radio, it could help save a life. A good pocket flash light like a Surefire or head lamp could get the attention of an air serch if your ever enjured or lost in the woods! Be safe!
  9. Then again any time you go out and about regardless of the reason we should be paying attention
  10. I'm also a Garmin 60CS user and a BIG FAN of electronic compass. Here in the Great North West we have a lot of wooded hiking tails. It is nice to get a fix on the GPS sats in the open then use the E.C. to point the direction and distances to the cache. The E.C. has assisted me in a few finds all ready! For Garmin 60CS users the compass feature is nice where you can easily configure the compass to get its baring from the SAT to electronic when you slow down to a specified speed. Example while in the car it can track your heading from that SATs and when your walking from the electronic magnetic compass. Of course I use "Follow Road" while in the car and "Off Road" when on the trail for routing. With the Garmin it is so easy to "PAGE" between the different screens. I love my Garmin
  11. I have to agree Garmin should support a service where units could be sent in for deregerastration of the map software. For example the unit is damaged or being sold you can still use your map software in another unit. Your allowed two units for City Select and that's it. Some people purchase a modle and find there needs change or desire to upgrade to a newer model the user should not be penalized on the software purchase! If you buy a new computer you can still use your old software!!! Garmin could still maintain that each user only had the software active on X number (two) of units at a time. 60CSX with external MEMORY CARD FINALLY!!!!!!!!! It's about time GARMIN!!! 512MB OH YA that will be nice to be able to swap out the Nav maps and have the hole USA all covered on just a few mem cards instead of revisiting the PC to reload each time you go for biz trip in a different parts of the US! It will be nice to have TOPO Maps on mem card as well as Nav Maps, with the larger 512 MB we should be able to cover a lot of area on a single card! I love my 60CS but maybe that new Nav software and receiver chip in the 60CSX will kick a** ! I hope so, at least they got a winning form factor on the 60C series in my opinion! For the diversified mobile use that is. Hay if you like an egg shaped unit on your dash or wrist watch size for hiking that's all cool they got those as well but for hand held mobile portable functional and rugged the 60CS series rocks! I use it for every thing from daily driving, biz trips, paragliding and geocashing! DelSolSea
