  1. Not really in the line of the OP. WHAT does my profile have to do with what I posted. Hence why I do not post any finds, DNF's or the like...privacy is one of the many aspects I love about all this Caching stuff, and also why I love hiking away from civilization. My stats are of no concern to you..my boss,Joe Smo,or my next door neighbor. What does matter...is why all these Groundspeak issues...Geocaching -VS -Waymarking-VS-CHALLENGES...ALR's, Virtuals, and "?" all seem to be challenges of sorts, seems to me. Why can't they fall under one "umbrella", and be accounted for with in one site, and have a general PQ and all be able to be with in a formal .GPX. In closing ,as I stated in my ending remark ,well here is proof in the pudding!
  2. Waymarks are reviewed. Each type of waymark has it's own set of reviewers. I stand Corrected...Guess I should tyr to list one before guessing on that, thank-you for the info! But still, why on a completely different site? Why also, is there no PQ setup? I like waymarks, have to say tho...would love to be able to start up a GSAK database, and not 25 at a time would be nice. The other day...I had like 50 for my Mom's trip, and a few were just of hotels and Mcd's...need a better filtering system, and to me the geocaching listing form works well enough.
  3. Ooopss...I am not sure why 2 posted...other than I did have a PC freeze, so perhaps I posted twice, sorry bout that! Sorry for not mentioning "Earthcaches"...while they do get published, I still recieve them like a geocache. So in a way it seems to me, that all these should follow the same format as submiting a Geocache/Earthcache/Event etc. "But don't try to put too many square pegs in a round hole."..I hear that, but really, look at the Waymarking site, it is just like the old virtuals, with a lot of Categories. It is not like they need to build a new site, and I am not a PC wiz, so am still not sure why the need for a whole new site, when they could have just expanded the geocaching site, and utilized the same form used when submitting a geocache, but perhaps create a menu box of the many waymark categories, that is do able yes?.. Again I am no PC Whiz, but these challenges...SHOULD ALSO BE going trough the same process as a geocahe. I would probably do more (some) Waymarking if there were a way to D/L them en masse after choosing some selection criteria. The biggest BIG DOG has stated that Challenges™ will eventually be available in some sort of PQ format. One thing is for sure...they have to work on this, as Jermey has said, they are here to stay, but if they keep adding on world challenges, one a day/week, that scroll list is GOING TO GET ANNOYING, and the search right now, as we all know is useless. Still the concept is fine, perhaps we should take the transformation upon our selves, go to Waymarking , and cross list all our favs as a challenge? (Just a brainstorm here folks), but in reality...they both have the same feel. "I believe Jeremy said Challenges will be PQ-able in the future. PQs are one of the biggest complains against Waymarking and possibly the biggest request by waymarkers. PQs for Waymarking is a request on the Feedback forum and is among the many Under Review. Waymarking seems to be caught in a vicious cycle: there are several reasons it is not very popular among geocachers" - I would probably do more (some) Waymarking if there were a way to D/L them en masse after choosing some selection criteria. I know...and wish it too would materialize, I have learned the value of these, they are great for several occasions, and fun educational (In most categories) and En-Mass PQ's would help it tremendously IMHO. Like I said in my OP, my Mom, and Grandma, if it was not for the Waymarks, and challenges, we would of done the norm sight seeing, but wth the two, was a fun day, Mom really loved the Waymarks, but cn and will pass a geocache, (Unless her son drags her along LOL) One last thing... I noted that they have split the challenge/geocache in the log and upper profile, perhaps they could add a ticker for Waymarks, Benchmarks, and what ever else they come up with. K will check back later, till then Enjoy the world one step at a a time!
  4. OK... not sure if I can get my vision out clearly enough...but here goes: I mostly hike, and learned of geocaching in 2007. I have tried almost every type that GS offers. I rarely log em, as I primarily just hike, and fish, camp. But do love a great treasure once in a while, and after this last rollout, and the fiasco it has sparked, have to say something, and wonder is GS heading in the wrong direction with all this separation between types of finds etc. There are other sites, where is all this going? As I have said I primarily just do out doors stuff, and Geocaching/Waymarking as a side track. I have tried Benchmarks...but honestly they seem complicated...they also are not ever in a PQ, therefore are never on my PORTABLE GPS UNIT, so the 5 I have found were merely by a fluke of probably another cacher with me at the time saying..."Betcha that's a B.M". OK..so that is why I have very few Waymarks also... they just do not generate a PQ,like you can with a Geocache, and yes they can be loaded to a GPS via a .LOC...which still just gives you basic Coordinates and title... unlike the Geocaches! But yet they have a set of coordinates. I do like doing the waymarks from Time to time, so have a few on the GPS'r, as well as an app "Historical sites", but wish these were published much like a geocache, and on the geocaching site.. which will never happen. But wish there was a PQ offering a GPX there as well Probably will never happen, OK so I'll live with it. Now..Challenges...I like the concept, and in actuality, they can be fun, and ideal in certain circumstances... example: Recently I had family up visiting, and they wanted to see a bit of the area. ages 61 and 80. Well my Mom, is one that will cache with me, but only if it is basically not deep deep hiking in the woods. My Grandma... well is not very mobile in the woods, and as with most walks very little , but with waymarks...I was able to get Grandma, and Mom to some great spots, and completed a challenge or two...(Actually remembered reading about two of them), that was fun, and great pictures and memories, so TY for Waymarks, and even a challenge. I did the waymarks with them, they loved em, and inadvertently I think Mom, she may do more Waymarking than caches in the future, I was just glad that I managed to remember a challenge or two, as these "challenges" are nothing near ready for a .GPX, hope one day they will tho..which leads me to another point.... If these challenges are to survive...should'nt they be listed like a geocache...same thing as listing a Cache, with a set of coordinates, and included into a PQ, as well as uploaded via a GPX. Shouldn't they also be easily seen on a search or map? Wouldn't they be more accessable on a GPS unit? The "Worldwide list is bound to become WAYYYYYY to long a list to scroll thru, and currently the only way to see local "Challenges" is by zip, cords, but I think the radius is a very small window. So how am I to know when out in the field that a challenge is near by ( You all know that feeling...Hey there is a cache just over there...or the ever popular email noti of a newly pub'd cache) I know I will do a few more Waymarks/Challenges here and there...if I remember to as I rely heavily on what is in my hand...IP4 or the GPS'r, but if they live in "No Mans Land" or sta a couch potato's dream, well they may just become a thing of the past, which I personally would hate to see. I really think that there should be a way to integrate all these into one concept..but obviously there are many that think only the tupperware should be counted as a "Find" but I think that if one can attach a set of coordinates to a location, it should all be under one umbrella. maybe perhaps break them down much like they already break down a cache type per the number found. I know I am mostly rambling on... hard to really get my "Big" vision out in text form. Basically...I think that: Geocaches...have a review process, listed with a set of cords, searchable via PQ, and has a 1000 limit .GPX and easy to place 1000 of em onto a GPS'r Benchmarks.. none, just go get em no real meaning other than the site. But may as ell add em into a pq filter Waymarks: No review, listed similarly to a geocache w/ cords descrip etc, not entirely PQ searchable, and only .GPX lite, or ,LOC..why can't they be on a pq at least like a geocache. Now Challenges: Not really searchable, and not .GPX friendly, can not load em onto a GPS'r at all.Fun..yes, cumbersome...right now yes...improvements needed! Ideally...all these have one thing in common...they all are location based, (Challenges are supposed to be), so, why not just have them all under on "umbrella", and perhaps a breakdown? Why can't all these be with in a PQ search, and a .GPX file be created. Why can't they all go under a review process, why can't I get all this info/data with in one spot? Why can't they all be under a review process, I know...reviewers have lives to, but seriously...some of the waymarks are at Mcdonalds, so if they want to waymark a McD, I say fine, just be sure the location is there that it is nothing more than that. No need to worry about all the huss and fuss about just how historical the site actually is... if it is not a great spot...the new fav and logs will reflect that. OK well I just think..we take this a wee bit to serious...why not just place them all as a listing, upgrade a few icons to represent them, and create a filter in the PQ section of "Cache types" to include, benchmarks, challenges, ALR, Waymarks, and call it a day. Then we all can just run one PQ, or 2, omit the ones we care less about and go for the ones we do love. Just be sure they all have a review, coordinates, descrip etc, and are PQ searchable, and .GPX friendly, GSAK friendly, and even Geoget friendly. OK..floor is open...sure there will be some Smart... out there ready to sink their teeth into this post, also hope there will be some constructive critics, as well a some supporters that may be able to better clarify what it is that I am trying to portray here. K get out there, , hike the world!
  5. Did not think to waymark the truck stops...but did waymark a few caches..Of course! Sure I'll locate a motel along the route... someone mentioned Rain Gear...Sure hope that rain clears away fro PA! C Ya All there!
  6. Uh... didn't that just make it "good form" to ask here? Gatta say... this forum was way nicer than when I posted for assistance as a noob way back! I think just about everyone took off the gloves on my post! Here we'll email the answer... WOW! Nice folks all of a sudden!
  7. A munzee... huh? Sounds interesting enough, just curious... what will happen if more of these letterboxing... caching style sites take off...I mean saturation.. a geocache may be sharing the same spot as a Munzee. Oh well sounds like fun all the same.
  8. I went to do some research for yet another "?" cache. Remembered a site that may have assisted in the cracking of this mystery...www.purplehell.com, Went to it... it popped up a blank white space... with the black ink spwraled across it saying: User has pass their Bandwidth...check back later. K that was 4 months ago... went back today...hoping any issues may have been fixed... nope..still down. anyone know if there is another site as such.. this was a very good site... lotta useful data.. here's to hoping for a full recovery!
  9. Well time has flown by.. less than a week to go! Are you all scrambling (Like me) to get all that gear together? I know I have procrastinated, and have just ran a PQ set for PA, in ZIP, and have all the geotrails and the associated passports, guess that is enough, or is it? I'll be roadtriping it from CT, not a lot of spare dough for a motel the the week long journey..(As I am leaving WAY EARLY.. for the AGT..thinking I can do it in 5-6 days) so will be road side car camping...creepy... but ... hoping for the best..(Any Tips greatly appreciated!) Been through a gear check.. did I forget anything? Tent.....Check Geopack....Check BUG REPELLENT and BUG GEAR.....Check Food ......Negative Stove /Fuel...Check Water....Check GWS Receipt...Check GPS'r's ... Check...refreshed and raring to hunt! GSAK Databases.....Check...Refreshed and populated with fresh data! PC..Power Packs....Check OK well getting excited for the upcoming Mega... hoping to meet many new faces...I'll be in the GZ at Tent City...See ya'll there!
  10. There are several options. See your later post "Vacation"... run a state by state ..date range PQ set's. Run a along a route... just break it into 400-500 mile chunks. Get the GS or geosphere app for your smartphone (if you do not have one.. grab one!) Do it old school... book mark and research, run a book mark PQ.
  11. When running your PQ... do a 50 mile radius....but also in the date's... input them in ranges...IE: 01/01/96 to 01/01/2006... get it to where it shows the closest number of caches to 1000... so if your first PQ comes back as 1000 caches, tweak back on the dates, IE: 01/01/96 to 11/01/95... that may come back as 996 , then you will have all the caches. GSAK,I have never had any issues with duplications, usually it will show which have been updated, which are new etc.
  12. Just as in life.. gonna be good apples and bad apples. I have met a few cachers, some are well snob-ish, others quite cool, been to a few events, nothing bad happened. I cache solo mostly, as is my nature, I just lead a soloist life. Many will say.."It is not about the numbers"... well yes it is.. if it were not why is it tagged to your profile? So yes we are very competitive, as is the human nature... to best the last guy. Cache on!
  13. Well then why'd you post? My point exactly...a basic topic, and well...Oh well.. I know some feel that way.. this is just a basic topic, if It were a serious one I'd post under the handle.. just figured I'd mention it up front, I like privacy at times, and others not so. So IMHO, it really does not matter, I think this way I'll get honest opinions, and so there it is. Back on my OP Liking the posts.. and yep I am B/O , been taking it easy and slow, gas here still 3.95 avg, and so that slooows me way down. I have been going for just about every cache, as I hate to read and plan... but the more I think about it.. well it just seems the way to go. Personally... I think it is more about the $'s than anything, at 2.?? I was out every Sat or Sun, well not anymore, we shall see, I know deep down that I like to explore, hiking is fine, add a cache it's great, perhaps I just got a bit caught up in smiley over dose!
  14. I own a 265w NUVI, there are a couple routes I am familiar with. A Got to D/L GSAK.. will make life much easier, a well worth while bit of software! Any rate after you do that.. locate either of the following macros.. garmin-nuvi-exportgpx.gsk or ConvertNuviGPX.gsk After you have a database set, this will generate a POI to install onto the Nuvi, I try to avoid adding the GPX's to the NUVI's as the seem to stay put. K now if you just hate GSAK.. (hard to believe) The only other way I know of, is to use GPSvisualizer.com, or generate a text file in excell type program comma separated. But as you know by now, best way is GSAK, simple as can be.
  15. Lately I have noticed that Geoing is not like it used to be. I used to not mind an all day adventure, drive hither and tither. On a whim head off for that FTF. Was quite a ritual, no worries, gas was affordable. Now with fuel so high.. I dread the travel. I try to cache while enroute, and only enroute. Today a few caches P&G popped up, one was close to a spot I once considered, but this was my early days, and would have been a LPC, but after figuring it was well dreadfully boring, never placed one there, but some one else did, only they used a GR, really close to the parking lot action. So I pulled in for the quick enroute cache, just to find muggles hanging out , so moved on to the next, this time a college campus lot, that was doing motorcycle license classes, blocking axcess to the CC. My steadfast rule in caching, is 3 DNF/strikes day over, so decided on one last enroute cache, got to gZ, and the CC was another dept store lot, GZ took me to the front entrance .. REALLY... read the logs, 2 finds right after pub, and they were not all to great in response, but 1 month in 2 finds, and well I just called it a day, gas is a limited resource so heading off to the woods was not going to happen. I just want to say, I have no issue with a P&G, they have their purpose, and well honestly, caching burnout syndrome comes to mind. I have heard of it, yet am not totally sure I am B/O, or just worried to much about gs, as 1 tank a week, is enough to get me to and from work, and do a few errands for the reality of life. Perhaps I am burnt out, perhaps not, but have to wonder, who all is burnt out, and who is still Geoing out there. If you are B/O, or have gone through a hiatus, what got the ol spark back? I have a trip planned for GSW IX, hoping that helps! NOTE: I know someone will note... THIS IS A "SOCK PUPPET". Forums here can be well a reflection upon a name, reputation is closely followed in this hobby/sport.obsession, enough said, I feel privacy is required at times, and so I have set it up and am giving full notice, sure I'll still get the nasty,or not so nasty, but at least it will not reflect back onto my true identity.
