    Toporama

If you know the map name: http://toporama.cits.rncan.gc.ca/images/b50k/ Or, they emailed me this: We regret the temporary disconnection of Toporama, as this site does not meet the Government requirements in terms of Common Look and Feel Standards for the Internet (CLF): http://www.cio-dpi.gc.ca/clf-upe/index_e.asp We are presently rebuilding this site and also giving it new functions such as Web Mapping Services. The release is scheduled for next Spring. Meanwhile you can access the old site at the address below, using "topoin" as a password. http://toporama.cits.rncan.gc.ca/topoaccess.html Natural Resources Canada Customer Support Group Tel: 1 (800) 661-2638 - Fax: (819) 564-5698 Email: ntdb@nrcan.gc.ca http://www.ctis.nrcan.gc.ca/ 2144, King Street West, suite 010 Sherbrooke, QC J1J 2E8 Canada Rob Mobile Cache Command

  3. My caching bag is one of those single strap, over the shoulder bags. It has a little pocket on the end of the strap that my GPS fits in perfectly. Up the strap further is a number of metal and webbing loops and that's were I hang my radio from it's belt hook. Rob Mobile Cache Command

  5. If you leave the hockey blade on and carry the stick inverted then you can "Slash" and "High Stick" any wild animals while out hiking. In addition, you could start competition geocaches where you body check and trip each other while trying to be the first to the cache! Rob Mobile Cache Command

I just want to summarize that I don't have a problem with people enjoying their work environment, I just don't think Internet access is a job requirement for most people and therefore is more of a distraction. As for your NPS guy, based on the tone and content of his message, he doesn't represent the NPS in his actions. He just seems like a bored employee. A bored employee is an unproductive employee!!! SportTrak Map/Pro

I'm thinking about buying a Maggy, SportTrak Map or Pro. I took a look at the unit in a Radio Shack and the base map for Toronto area was the 401, 400 and an icon for the airport! I was wondering if anyone here is using either of these models. My questions are: Is the base map any better on the Pro (with regards to Ontario)? How good are the Mapsend maps for Ontario (around Toronto area)? (If you've used the Garmin maps could you compare please!) The reason for this is simple. If the maps suck too bad then what's the point? I'll save my cash! Thanks! Rob Mobile Cache Command
  10. quote:Originally posted by DirtRunner:Hey Mr. CPU, what are you doing posting to the geocaching web site when it’s past 9 AM EST on a working day? Are you stealing time from your current employer who is paying you consultation fees? Or are you robbing time from your family by surfing on the net instead of looking for more work? It's called "Having the morning off because you've worked 30 hours in the last 3 days!". As for the family, the 10 year old is at school and everyone else is asleep! Besides, I'm on flex hours most of the time anyways. For example it is 8:00am and I'm just doing some quick emails before I head out the door quote:Want to know what’s a waste? Employers searching all email and net activity instead of channeling all that energy into generating new business. Yea, I surf, But I also get the job done -- a lot of jobs, as long as that is the case, get off my back. Employers who limit access are just hurting themselves. I want to see someone get canned for going to CNN or Canoe… For most employees, Web access is NOT required for their jobs. In additon there are liability issues for employers if employees surf to naughty places. Email IS the property of your employer. Email needs to be backed up daily. These backup tapes cost money, the servers hard drives are way more expensive then home pc hard drives. The bandwidth to the internet costs money and YOU the employee costs money when you're sitting around NOT working. 10 minutes of personal email every day (not on your lunch or break I mean) amounts to ONE FULL WEEK per year. What do you make a week? If your an average office worker then you've wasted $770+ of your employers money. Now there happen to be 1000 people in your company who all do the same thing, $770,000.. round UP because lots of people do more then 10 minutes... $1 million AND I haven't included the physical costs of providing you with that wasted internet access. Now consider that the 1000 person unit is a government department and voila! A local school doesn't get the books they need because some "George Bush" doesn't see a problem with surfing when he should be working. quote:is a tool to help you. And yes that included goofing off on it, sometimes just need to blow off some steam. Sure. But the stats seem to show that it is more of a huge, mind numbing waste of time then anything else! quote:geocache busting. And to do his job effectively he used <<*GASP*>> the internet! The Fool! Why didn’t he just go out a rent a dozen Actually, it doesn't sound like he had any sort of mandate to patrol the woods. He's probably a deskjocky who's bored. IF he really had a mandate he would have notified the cache owner that the cache was placed improperly and needed to be removed. This seems to be the trend amongst legitimate authorities, not a cowboy like GB. Just remember, hold the reigns too tight, the horse will buck. DirtRunner. quote:[This message was edited by DirtRunner on December 11, 2002 at 08:15 AM.] And your not working because....?!?!? :-) Rob Mobile Cache Command

Firstly, I'm not married the $5 fee idea. I just figure it would be attractive to the parks people. That's how they think isn't it? That's how government types think... so why not use it as a way to ensure our success. Otherwise we end up being banned outright from all provincial parks!!! As for the "who voted you to talk for us" comments... I do think we need to form a users group for Ontario. This should be one of the main topics IF the meeting that is being discussed in the other thread every takes place. As for the morality of a few people making decicisons that effect the whole, this is unfortunatly how things end up anyway you look at it. What we need to do is promote a meeting and online discussion where a small council is created to do the bulk of the work. A website dedicated to an Ontario Geocachers Society would be a neat idea. 12. quote:what did the guy do? Use a "taxpayer funded computer" for a personal email that was neither personally threatening, nor sexually harassing? Please, everybody line up to buy my bridge if you think "government employees" don't do personal emails on your dime. I work as an IT consultant. Almost all of our clients are very strict about inappropriate use of company resources. Some of my clients simply observe all traffic and emails coming from the users. If someone is doing something beside the occasion "hi honey, I'll be home at 6" type of email or MAYBE checking the hockey scores on their lunch, then the person is reprimanded. On the other end of the scale there are a couple of my clients who only allow access to the internet for specific individuals. If a user thinks they need internet access for their job then they have to go to their manager. In most cases it means paperwork and approval which results in them gaining access to THE ONE site they need and nothing more. My opinion is simple. When you show up at my office to work for me and I'm paying you I expect you to WORK. If I ran a company I'd be VERY strict about this. Internet usage is becomeing the number one productivity KILLER in North America. Email is almost as much of a time waster as it is a time saver these days and surfing up your holiday plans is just not acceptable. If I ran a company I'd have a computer with unlimited (but monitered) internet access in the the employee lunch room. Only specific work related websites, if any, would be accessible from the users desk. As for your NPS guys/girl. I want you to look at your pay stub the next time you get paid. I want you to look at the amount of money that has been taken off for tax. I want you to stare at it and imagine that someone just handed that money to you as cash right now. What would you do with it? Would you buy a new TV? Would you drive a better car? Each and everyone of us is being ROBBED by Government waste! It's as if they were taking that money out of your pocket and burning it in front of you every Friday!!! Don't defend the guy. Wrong is Wrong when it comes to wasting YOUR money out of YOUR pocket that you could have used to purchase a new GPS. Sure, we all need to put in our fair share but when Governments WASTE BILLIONS of dollars every year, is that fair to you and me? I say that if this Geobuster has the time to surf around looking for Geocaches at work then he isn't busy enough. If he isn't busy enough then he is a waste of YOUR money out of YOUR pocket!!!! Am I the only one who gets mad when the government wastes the money that they (some say illegally) take out of my hands and away from my family?!?!?!?! Rob Mobile Cache Command

I think that it is time for us to create a "users group" and contact the guy in the letter to start a dialogue. I'd like to setup some sort of official pathway and policies for this. What I'm afraid of is getting into a situation where Ranger Rick doesn't mind you geocaching on "his" land but Ranger Joe is against it and Ranger Sue has never heard of it. I'm all for the idea of creating a park usage fee where you pay a couple of bucks (no more then $5) to get a permit to plant a cache. In your application you have to state where you plan to put it (scope it out first) and then you put a photocopy of the permit in the log book. The $5 would go towards the additional cost of having park officials deal with a geocacher who wants to plant a cache. Cheers, Rob Rob Mobile Cache Command

  15. I participate in bi-monthly "GAG" or Groupwise Administrators Group. We meet to discuss new Groupwise related products and to discuss problems that we may have encountered. A typical meeting involves the organizer (groupwise.org) finding a sponsor to host the location. A couple of meetings ago we held it in the classroom at my office (Around $200 rental) and the last one was held at Metro Hall (Toronto) where they have lots of meeting rooms for community groups. (At 8pm that night was the "Bi-Sexual Men of Toronto" meeting! I would expect to see something where someone talks about a new GPS they have, someone else demo's Fugawi or ExpertGPS or something like that. Perhaps we could get Fugawi to come as a guest (with demo software and a raffle for a free copy of fugawi!). Anyways, the meetings usually last around 2 or 3 hours and afterwards the core people go grab a beer! (or two!) Rob Mobile Cache Command

  18. I 've bought ST 2001, and then 2002 and been quite happy with them. I've been using them to import geocache info and therefore have a zoomable, clickable map that is way better then anything online (sorry Bux!). I WAS eagerly looking forward to 2003 because one of the features is the ability to set your own pushpin icons! Unfortunatly, what I've been reading on Microsoft's own news server; news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.streets-trips is quite negative. The summary is that MS switched to a different set of map data, (some day different provider, some say same provider) and as a result a ton of data is MISSING!!! From what I've read, if your in Canada (like me) DO NOT buy this product! Lots of street names are missing and replaced with usless road numbers. For the US, apparently there are streets missing in this version that WERE in 2002 and some POI info such as postoffices isn't there either. As for new features, there are only a couple of minor ones, clearing your find history and custom icons. MS ST2002 is a nice product, especially for us up here in Canada. Unfortunatly, Microsoft has RUINED it in version 2003. I will defer to the general opinion in the newsgroup there and NOT buy this upgrade. Cheers, Rob Mobile Cache Command
  19. quote:Originally posted by Cache Canucks: quote:Originally posted by mrcpu:"...I always sign and if I have them with me, I put my Sig (look left) logo as a sticker in the log..." Had it made up in stickers, eh? Cool. I 8 1/2 x 11 uncut label sheets at the Business Depot. They are great for stuff like that or Book Crossing labels. No more trying to find the right label, just print out and cut! Cheers, Rob Mobile Cache Command
  20. I always sign and if I have them with me, I put my Sig (look left) logo as a sticker in the log. I also throw one of my cards in if I have one too. I really like the cards and think they are pretty neat. Some people have put a lot of time and effort into these cards so I don't mind if they just leave a card. Rob Mobile Cache Command

    Ammo Cans

I get my Ammo Can's for around $10 at Beaver Army Surplus I don't know if they have much of a website but if you're in Toronto go to 401/Dufferin, get off and go South approx 500m to: 43.72099 N 79.45595W (East Side at Sparrow) Beavers Surplus Exchange Ltd. 3269 Dufferin St. Toronto, Ontario M6A 2T4 Tel: (416) 784-1161 Fax: (416) 784-1163 email: beavers@shopdome.com Rob Mobile Cache Command
  22. The nice thing about the hack is that the info comes up RIGHT AWAY when you turn it on! The way I figure it, if someone found my GPS, the chances of them actually figuring out how to turn it on are slim (Garmin Venture, you hold the button down on the right side but their not very well marked). Secondly, IF the person got the unit on, finding the Owner's page would be unlikely, if not impossible, HOWEVER the startup screen is THE perfect place to put this because you see it without having to do anything. Another example of this type of thing is the Palm OS devices. There is an owners page but it is BURIED in the preferences. It took me a few minutes to remember where it was, so the chances of someone finding you Palm and finding your owner's page is slim. There was a company that shipped a sticker with my palm IIIe from a company, http://www.returnme.com/ It was a neat idea to. Cheers, Rob Mobile Cache Command
  23. I doubt that there would be enough interest/participants to have a conferance ourselves HOWEVER what about having a booth at an outdoor show? There are shows at the CNE grounds and Metro Toronto Convention centre all the time aren't there?!?! We could have a medium size booth with sponsorship from retailers and Geocaching.com supplying banners and gc gear to sell to recoup costs. If the boot was big enough we could have speakers talk about things like environmental issues, obtaining permission, and of course the latest GPS gear! Oh well, I doubt this would ever actually go anywhere.... but it's nice to imagine! Cheers, Rob Mobile Cache Command
  24. My THLP is expanding! I'm working very hard to get some coding done for my boss that is very similar to what I will require to take THLP to the next level including Beer stores, Liquour stores, Walmarts, and just about anything else you want to waypoint! Keep your eyes open on the THLP site for an update in the next couple of weeks! Cheers, Rob Mobile Cache Command
  25. Fix the poll please! I have softmap. Other then a really CHEAP way to get ALL of southern Ontario in a scrollable map, it sucks. The only other good thing I can say is it's printing capabilities. The interface is cludgy and in the basic software you can only add one waypoint at a time and not import waypoints en mas. You CAN import multiple waypoints IF you spend $$$ on the GPS add on (costs about as much as the original software.. DUH!) I'd love to hear about QVN or some other software that HAS the topos. Fugawi and Ozi are much better but you have to supply your own topos or purchase them on CD for LOTS of extra CASH. Rob Mobile Cache Command
