  1. Wouldn't it be neat if when you were on a Nearest Geocache(s) page and clicked the pocket query link at the top, it filled in the lat/lon for the origin of your search? Rob Mobile Cache Command

    New Waypoint IDs

After reading this entire thread I've come to the realization that since the database id for a cache is a sequential decimal number then we really DON'T have a problem! We are NOT going to run out of space in our GC naming convention. Why? Because all we have to do is stop thinking of the GCxxxx name as global and consider it a localized waypoint name for your own usage. In order to accomodate this we might want to have a field under preferences where you can specify how many chars your GPS will use for it's waypoint names. Then when you download to a GPS that supports 10 char names it won't get truncated. When you download to a GPS that only supports 6 chars then a couple of simple to program things happens. HEXVERSION = convert database id to hex if HEXVERSION is < = 6 then waypoint id is "GC" + HEXVERSION if HEXVERSION is = 7 then waypoint id = "G" + HEXVERSION if HEXVERSION is > = 8 then waypoint id = HEXVERSION Now what about the G-C0000 through G-CFFFF problem? Who cares! These wayoint names are GLOBAL. They are for YOUR purposes, and do not absolutely represent a GC in the database. This means that you will have to know how you've setup your GPS and the downloads. As for advanced features like being able to use VC or GC or whatever, I'd like to see something a bit different. I'd like to see the ability for each of us to create and share XSL stylesheets and select those stylesheets to be applied to the data at download time. Imagine that you have a specific need. Instead of writing a piece of software, perhaps you could do it with a style sheet. Now you've just got to have a way to upload the style sheet to your GC profile and let the existing .NET software on GC's end apply that for you before the download starts. Rob Mobile Cache Command
  3. That's a neat idea. I like it! Rob Mobile Cache Command

  6. quote:Originally posted by GOT GPS?:Anybody that has a sony camcorder with Infrared Night Vision will be able to see somewhat at night. There are also Infrared Illuminators available that can attach to the camera to give extra bright illumination. I've got a Sony with NV and I've used it outside a few times, but not for GCing. The part I don't like is that it isn't really very rugged, nor water proof. The neat part is being able to record your adventure and play it back later, sort of a Blair Witch project. 7. Hi! The THLP sort of got rolled into another site: www.opengs.org but that has kind of died out a bit and I haven't had much time to do anything with it. Perhaps I'll revive it. I might have all the waypoints around somewhere if you want them... email me directly. Rob Mobile Cache Command
  8. quote:Originally posted by arkangelz:From http://www.wired.com/news/conflict/0,2100,47739,00.html Selective availability (SA), which globally degraded the quality of GPS available to civilians, has been turned off since a May 2000 executive order signed by President Clinton. It's been replaced by selective deniability, which allows the military to geographically pinpoint areas should it choose to degrade GPS quality. Didn't Clinton Invent Selective Deniability? "I did not have sex with Monica" etc etc ?!?! LOL! Rob Mobile Cache Command
  9. quote:Originally posted by res2100:Semi related...but I recently heard form a friend that is going to the States tonight that you now need a passport to go there...he stood in line to pick his up today. Is this true, or is this just "suggested" for non-Canadians? In the past, all we needed was out Canadian birth certificate, and more recently a photo id. http://ca.geocities.com/rsab2100/pond.html I know a (very white) guy who just went for a 3 day training course. He realized too late that his passport was expired but he went with a Drivers License and Birth Certificate anyways. Rob Mobile Cache Command
  10. According to the Canadian Firearms act: Protection of Life 2. For the purpose of section 20 of the Act, the circumstances in which an individual needs restricted firearms or prohibited handguns to protect the life of that individual or of other individuals are where (a) the life of that individual, or other individuals, is in imminent danger from one or more other individuals; ( police protection is not sufficient in the circumstances; and © the possession of a restricted firearm or prohibited handgun can reasonably be justified for protecting the individual or other individuals from death or grievous bodily harm. http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/disp.pl?doc=f-11.6%2Fsor-98-207%2F114843.html;query=police;lang=en Section 20: 20. An individual who holds a licence authorizing the individual to possess restricted firearms or handguns referred to in subsection 12(6) (pre-February 14, 1995 handguns) may be authorized to possess a particular restricted firearm or handgun at a place other than the place at which it is authorized to be possessed if the individual needs the particular restricted firearm or handgun (a) to protect the life of that individual or of other individuals; or ( for use in connection with his or her lawful profession or occupation. http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/f-11.6/58107.html I see this as a reasonable defence for carrying a handgun or rifle while back-country geocaching in Canada. HOWEVER, the police officer who you run into COULD arrest you and place criminal charges on you and seize your firearm. Then, after months or years of expensive lawers you PROBABLY could get the charges dropped! -- Is it worth it? Rob Mobile Cache Command

  13. I have one of each. Venture: -no real map unless you count the display of your track and waypoints on a blank "map" -AWSOME database of Canadian towns but no other POI -Great GUI -Sometimes difficult to keep signal -Nice plug in back for cable, easy to use -Service was great when I had to send it back BUT it wasn't completely fixed -click stick is difficult in mitts Sportrak Map -Base Map sucks but for $150... -Map Software is actually quite good. -Base Unit POI is all american -Purchased map's POI is limited -GUI is difficult compared to Garmin -Doesn't do everything garman can do for fancy calculations etc -Better Signal lock then Garmin -Screw on Cable on back is pain in the butt -Cool Dual Datum/Format feature lets you view your location in two different ways at the same time. Overall, I am pretty happy with my Sportrak because the MAIN thing I want out of a GPS is accuracy and signal lock and the Sportrak is THE best for these two points. 15. I think the trade off of not finding the cache completely on your own is out weighed by the awsome experience of finding someone as crazy as yourself! LOL Rob Mobile Cache Command
  16. I don't have a caption but I have a story... one time while I was out caching I had to pee (go figure!) and while I knew I was getting close, I decided to stop and go before I started looking. As I was standing there doing my thing I looked about 2 feet to the left at this stump and there was the cache! I darn near pee'ed on it! Don't eat the yellow snow! Rob Mobile Cache Command
  17. My GPS has a first name, it's H O M E R, my GPS has a second name it's H O M E R. Rob Mobile Cache Command
  18. Fizzymagic... firstly... Awsome script! Thanks! I am having one small problem that I was hoping you are working on. I want to convert the HTML files to a Palm Web Clipping Application or PQA. Unfortunatly a couple of cache pages in my GPX file have links to images. It causes the PQA maker to choke and I have to open the file(s) manually and kill the tag. I was hoping you could create a file called options.txt with an option like "NoImages" in it (obviously with future possibilities like "DownloadImages" or "Onebigfile" or "NoLoc" etc etc) that would help. If you aren't working on this then maybe if I get some free time (My next available spot looks like November!) I could code it in myself. Cheers and Thanks! Rob Mobile Cache Command

  22. quote:I know he did, but that's my whole point. Not all caches are family friendly. And not all cacher's idea of "family friendly" is the same.Would you take the little kids on a 2 mile hike up steep terrain to get a cache? What about one that required scuba gear? Or extensive rockclimbing? Are those 'family friendly'? I don't have ANY problems with Jeremy saying such and such types of caches aren't acceptable. I'd rather he just came out and said "You can't do it because it's my site and I said so" than to push some lame crap like "It's not family friendly" Two things; Firstly, YES I would take my kid on a long, rough hike, when he is old enough for it. BUT at that age, he isn't old enough to see the "crap" (to use your favorite adjective/pronoun) that you want to pollute this site with. Secondly, by keeping a certain "standard" that upholds a set of values that apply to the common denomitator, Jeremy keeps the site out of trouble and helps the sport. Again, go register nudecaching.com if you feel that you want to promote alternative lifestyle caching. I might even come over there and visit, BUT I don't want that stuff here and neither does the majority. It's a free internet, you don't like the way something is done build your own! :-) Rob Mobile Cache Command
  23. Keep it clean on Geocaching.com... if your into clothing optional caches then start your own site! Kind of adds new meaning to "logging a find" doesn't it! Rob Mobile Cache Command

When you installed the map software, its got some really cool features. Anyway just thought I would say I love mine too! I have one and it's not a digital compass in the Sportrak Map.. it looks like a compass but it is a differential compass, meaning it looks at where you were a second ago and where you are now and deduces your direction... sorry to burst your bubble!
