I think a variety of things would do best. I bring things with me which will fit in a larger container and trades which will fit into smaller containers. There are so many different things to trade, these people are very creative. Some leave items which identify them like buttons and pins which have photos on them, beads, action figures, caribiners, mini flashlights, stickers..the list is limited only by your imagination.
I put a bunch of things into my backpack and leave them there. I add to it to freshen things up now and then.

Im hoping to shed some light on this.
The area I will be placing the cache in, is pretty much free from homeless encampments, and drug deals. Although some teenagers live within a mile - they are mostly busy riding horses and mountain bikes. The cache will be off a main trail where many hikers pass by. IE: the high muggle zone.
I dont think many of those hiking in the area would be interested in hauling the cache down the hill to get into it. But if someone were to stumble onto it, they would probably be curious enough to open it. This is not an issue for me after the FTF prize is gone.
The camo on the cache is really pretty good, but the only place in the area I can place the cache is somewhat out in the open. I would just like to secure the box for the first person and then after that it can remain unlocked.
I love the washer and bolt idea briansnat - I think I might give that a try.

Im not sure I get this, who is "they"? a team of who?
Is this when ANY ammo can is found or what?
I dont think it would be feasible or financially possible to go out with a team to remove locks from each ammo can which is imprinted with "cache" on it...
Do you mean in town or is this out in the woods or what?
By the way, no this is not a puzzle cache, but the cache will be in a high muggle traffic zone and I do not want the expensive FTF prizes stolen to say the least.

Is there a way to secure an ammo can - as in lock the flip handle to keep just anyone form opening it? If anyone has a way to drill, attached some thin cable and lock these boxes, I would like to hear from you, thanks.

New England NooB - Great information, thanks so much. I checked out your cache page - WOW, very impressive. My cache is intended to be a tribute as well, only for people who are still alive - who have made a tremendous positive impact on my life, and actually showed me the place I intend to place my cache. Sorry to hear about Eric's passing, makes me sad I did not know him, sounds like he was a great guy!!

Am I getting this right, if I uncheck the box at the top of the form, my post will just hang out until I finish adding all the information, then I check the box for review, is this right?
When I am filling out the online form under details there is a place for a short description and a long description, are these posted on the cache page as is, or are they for the reviewer or both, is it possible to clean up copy after a review or not?
After it gets reviewed, is there a chance to put in all of those cool blue international symbols?
If I have specific directions to access the cache, where should I put this information....
The more information you all can give me the better I can make my cache page and the happier you will be with me! Thanks!!

To me, as it stands, all that mattered is that the damage, which a cacher was blamed for and threatened to be charged with vandalism for. The damage should be assessed by a cacher living in the area. If it was determined that damaged was done and still visible, contact with the management would have needed to be made, so that the damage could be fixed, and that is/was my sole purpose in posting. Just showing up with a bunch of cachers without determining damage or contacting the management would not have been my idea of an amicable resolution to the problem. That the cacher got permission or did not get permission was/is not my focus.
I am going to contact a person living in the area to double check the current status of the landscaping. I still think someone - like the cacher who hid the cache to begin with should step up, but I can not force people to care, and at least apologize and ask if there was any money spent on the landscaping as a result of the cache being there, and make arrangements for reimbursement.
On the fribee players - Frisbee player can cause damage, I suspect not the same kind of damage done by cachers, granted kids with malicious intent walking by could cause damage as well. Fingers can be pointed to anyone using the area. The fact is that a cache WAS placed there, and damage happened while the cache was there and being looked for. Personally, I don't care about the frisbee players or anyone else there who might or might not have caused damage or made damage worse. If a cache was there and the LIKELYHOOD of the landscape being damaged was a result of cachers, then we as a caching community should be willing to help make the place whole again.
These are my thoughts and Im sticking to them.

Thank you for the information. All I found were two In & Out Burger places, and I had trouble finding any caches which might be the one in question....
Anyone in the Southbay willing to assist the management of this establishment, in cleaning up our mess?

I know nothing more about the cache than it was located at In-n-Out Burger restaurant just off of 101 in Mountain View, California

I contacted the powers that be here at Geocaching.com about the below portions of a thread located on another site dedicated to local caching and they suggested I post my dillema here. So I have copied the important portions of that thread for you to check out. It is a site for cachers of The San Francisco Bay Area, so if you live in this area, specifically the Silicon Valley, I would appreciate some suggestions as to how to right this wrong. If I could afford the gasoline, and the price of the plants or whatever it would take in order to clean up this mess, I would be down there in a heartbeat. But I can not afford to go, no matter how much I want to. Im not happy about having to post this at all, but I feel even worse that nothing is being done... I was wondering if the cachers of the Greater Silicon Valley can help out. Once you read the posts, feel free to post whatever and if you can get some cachers together to fix the damage done at the below mentioned business, it would mean a great deal, not only to the geocaching community, but to the business as well. Plus I would be eternally grateful.

Whether it be turning stones back over and purchasing grasses to replace the dead and or damaged ones, I think it warrants the effort. Letting the management, who was so upset he was threatening to charge the author of the start of this thread with vandalism, sounds like enough damage was done.
Maybe Im reading this wrong but just because it is a fast food restaurant, and not everyone sees the value in the landscaping materials does not mean it does not matter or it matters less than if somewhere else. This makes me want to distance myself from geocaching. People can not be forced to care and that there is little or no attempt made for the local cachers to try and make good out of an obvious wrong is sad.
Really, what would it take to turn the rocks back over and replace them? To find out about the grasses and get a kitty together to replace or repair the grasses? To get a dozen cachers together to help out with this?
I just spent hours at the start of this month, with a number of other cachers, and boyscouts cleaning up garbage, clearing out weeds and placing mountains of mulch down to beautify an area in my town. This month is CITO month and here Im reading about just the type of behavior which makes caching and cachers look bad. Frankly I am put off by a lack of concern in this matter. But that is just me, I care. I would like to say I am affiliated with an organization that cares - all the time, not just when it makes them look good."

For tick control, you need to just be on the lookout. Dress your child in lighter colored clothing. Tape up the hem area to limit access there. If you can, put your child in a long sleeve light colored shirt as well. If you can tape the sleeves closed too, try it. You can use bicycle clips when your child gets older. This does not guarantee no tick contact.
If you find a tick which has not burrowed in, dont panic, they do not move fast. Just pick it up/off and toss it in the toilet, maybe add some toilet cleaner. They do not swim. Check the genital area, under arms, back of neck and any FOLDED skin area. Although ticks like anywhere the blood is close to the surface of the skin. If you find a tick embedded. Dont panic. Get out the tweezers, the ones with the wider head is easier to use. Place the head of the tweezers right on the skin on each side of the tick , squeeze your tweezers and pull. This ensures you get the entire bug.

I was wondering.
Im new to the sport/game and when I first started I printed out some cache pages. That was last fall. Since then some of these caches have been archived.
Some have been archived just to be repaired and spruced up. They have become active again.
Some have disappeared completely, and I was wondering, other than maybe lack of interest or finding out that the place you placed your cache in the summer is in a flood zone in the winter or something like that. I was wondering how many of you have archived a cache, how many caches, and why you archived them.
Just curious.

Trichinellosis
(TRICK-a-NELL-o-sis)
Trichinellosis, also called trichinosis, is caused by eating raw or undercooked meat of animals infected with the larvae of a species of worm called Trichinella. Infection occurs commonly in certain wild carnivorous (meat-eating) animals but may also occur in domestic pigs.
What are the symptoms of a trichinellosis infection?
Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue, fever, and abdominal discomfort are the first symptoms of trichinellosis. Headaches, fevers, chills, cough, eye swelling, aching joints and muscle pains, itchy skin, diarrhea, or constipation follow the first symptoms. If the infection is heavy, patients may experience difficulty coordinating movements, and have heart and breathing problems. In severe cases, death can occur.
For mild to moderate infections, most symptoms subside within a few months. Fatigue, weakness, and diarrhea may last for months.
How soon after infection will symptoms appear?
Abdominal symptoms can occur 1-2 days after infection. Further symptoms usually start 2-8 weeks after eating contaminated meat. Symptoms may range from very mild to severe and relate to the number of infectious worms consumed in meat. Often, mild cases of trichinellosis are never specifically diagnosed and are assumed to be the flu or other common illnesses.
How does infection occur in humans and animals?
When a human or animal eats meat that contains infective Trichinella cysts, the acid in the stomach dissolves the hard covering of the cyst and releases the worms. The worms pass into the small intestine and, in 1-2 days, become mature. After mating, adult females lay eggs. Eggs develop into immature worms, travel through the arteries, and are transported to muscles. Within the muscles, the worms curl into a ball and encyst (become enclosed in a capsule). Infection occurs when these encysted worms are consumed in meat.
Am I at risk for trichinellosis?
If you eat raw or undercooked meats, particularly bear, pork, wild feline (such as a cougar), fox, dog, wolf, horse, seal, or walrus, you are at risk for trichinellosis.
Can I spread trichinellosis to others?
No. Infection can only occur by eating raw or undercooked meat containing Trichinella worms.
What should I do if I think I have trichinellosis?
See your health care provider who can order tests and treat symptoms of trichinellosis infection. If you have eaten raw or undercooked meat, you should tell your health care provider.
How is trichinellosis infection diagnosed?
A blood test or muscle biopsy can show if you have trichinellosis.
How is trichinellosis infection treated?
Several safe and effective prescription drugs are available to treat trichinellosis. Treatment should begin as soon as possible and the decision to treat is based upon symptoms, exposure to raw or undercooked meat, and laboratory test results.
Is trichinellosis common in the United States?
Infection was once very common and usually caused by ingestion of undercooked pork. However, infection is now relatively rare. During 1997-2001, an average of 12 cases per year were reported. The number of cases has decreased because of legislation prohibiting the feeding of raw-meat garbage to hogs, commercial and home freezing of pork, and the public awareness of the danger of eating raw or undercooked pork products. Cases are less commonly associated with pork products and more often associated with eating raw or undercooked wild game meats.
How can I prevent trichinellosis?
Cook meat products until the juices run clear or to an internal temperature of 170 o F.
Freeze pork less than 6 inches thick for 20 days at 5 o F to kill any worms.
Cook wild game meat thoroughly. Freezing wild game meats, unlike freezing pork products, even for long periods of time, may not effectively kill all worms.
Cook all meat fed to pigs or other wild animals.
Do not allow hogs to eat uncooked carcasses of other animals, including rats, which may be infected with trichinellosis.
Clean meat grinders thoroughly if you prepare your own ground meats.
Curing (salting), drying, smoking, or microwaving meat does not consistently kill infective worms.
I know the wild pig, deer and turkey populations are booming. Other than rabies, distemper and botulism (from eating garbage out of plastic bags) even pneumonia could have been the case with the bear which attacked.

The Garmin etrex series are great. They are affordable, not too hard to use and are rugged. I have two and a friend has one. Some people are into downloading more information and like the color displays, with the more expensive models - but to me the etrex is just fine.
I found mine on line (here, craigslist, ebay, amazon.com) for about $100- used, including all the extras. I might suggest you use rechargeable batteries (get a super fast charger) that way you can recharge your unit in the car or at your home,motel, friends house etc. REI carries lots of accessories like leather cases etc

It is possible the "shrine" you found was just an offering. Like going on a vision quest, many new agers make offerings about things which are meaningful to them. It is possible this person wanted to quit smoking, or even knew someone who died of a tobacco related disease. Often these people go to a meaningful place for them and leave their offering.
I have heard that where there is a big population of voodoo worshippers, chickens will be sacrificed by a railroad track or roadway, although startling to first come across, they are more detrimental to the chickens than to anyone else.
On the mushroom find. I had to laugh. That mushroom is actually called "dead mans fingers" because that is what they resemble.

Welcome to a wonderful sport/game. I learned myself the hard way too.
Check the post of the cache carefully. Does it say micro? regular cache? Read carefully the Terrain and Difficulty. I suggest you check out the thread here at the forums on cache containers....some of these people have alot of time on their hands and are great at the art of hiding anything. Once you get to the place, leave the GPS and use your senses. I have also found that rechecking the gps coordinates with the cache coordinates helps alot when Im close but not close enough. I also flip through the GPS's "pages" to help me get a bead on where to look. Then I put the unit away and look high and low. Good luck, dont give up, and please be sure to share your future cache hunting notes.

BattlewoodSkye - Welcome to geocaching, I admire your willingness to hang in there and try to get everything resolved. I hope you won't give up, and will get to use your new GPSr to play!!! Hang in there, things will get straightened out soon. This really is a fun way to get out and enjoy life outdoors.

I am thankful for what caches I am able to get to and recover from. While I can appreciate what it takes to place and find a cache 22 miles from the nearest roadway, I have a physical disability and while I would have once been able to find such a cache, if not for the micros placed behind a rock in the parking lot on the borders of that beautiful state park near the trailhead of that 22 mile hike, or the urban caches - micro or not, I would not be able to participate in geocaching. So for me, Im thankful for what I can get to, get back from and recover from within a reasonable amount of time. I may not be able to see the beautiful vistas far from civiliazation no matter what my heart desires or even dive into a good sized cache on a regular basis because Im surrounded by micros, but all I can do is all I can do.

Someone should start a stand up comedy routine on how paranoid and obsessed a new cacher might get after placing their first cache...Much like getting a new first car off the dealership floor. I just placed my first cache and find myself thinking about the cache alot.
Is the camo holding up?
Is it being muggled?
Did it somehow become exposed so that it is not longer hidden so well....Just like a first new car.
Is it getting broken into?
Is someone keying it or spray painting it?
Did I just buy a lemon?
There should be a warning somewhere....
