FYI - Im not angry, Im disappointed. Disappointed in myself that I did not explain to those visiting my cache that it is imperitive to replace the cache where they found it so those that are in a wheelchair have access. It is why I chose the spot I did.
I am not expecting any preferential treatment, Im surprised that someone who put out a hand to help me find a cache that he moved over six feet under an observation platform which would certainly have attracted attention on the well travelled path it is on, but makes it impossible for anyone with a disability or mobility issues or even claustrophia issues to retrieve the cache just go back for the geocoins in the cache.
As someone who does suffer from mobility issues (see the title of this topic)my disability is more than spelling errors. I have placed my caches so that they are accessible to those with mobility issues. They may not be readily available for a wheel chair bound person but they are within reach for those who may have a hard time crawling, climbing etc.
I did e mail the cacher who offered to help me retrieve the cache but did not respond to my e mail after he took a coin out which concerned me a bit about his intentions, his next to last e mail was that he grabbed a coin nothing else. I find it frustrating on a couple of fronts, frist Im trying to get the cache repalced in order to re-enable it and that he took the coin when it was disabled. It has not been disabled that long, and I have been in constant contact so....where does one get the idea that all of a sudden things are not going to be moving along.
I did get yet another e mail saying he wants the coins. So, now I know his priorites, good enough for me. I will have my friends kid go get the cache tomorrow and the whole issue will become a non issue.
My intent in posting was to relate my surprise at the sudden turn of events. One day, he is all okay Ill help you, here is where it is, and I will take a photo to Im grabbing coins end of sentence and to get feed back from you all here since like I wrote, even though I love caching I dont spend alot of active time like most cachers due to my mobility issues, I know alot of you cache everyday, have tons of caches out there and have more experience with things like this.

I am just going to have to put up a new cache container, so people who are in a wheelchair are able to access it as originally intended, it sure is disappointing but I did all I could do and Im not going to waste any more time on the cacher who unfairly played the game by removing the geocoin from the disabled cache..Thanks for you input

I have been caching for awhile now and love it, but Im not highly experienced because of a physical disablity, which limits my funds, and mobility so when I do cache, I put alot into it.
I recently placed another cache. I thought I picked a great place, under and observation deck in my watershed. It was well received and was getting some visits. When I placed the cache I placed it under the deck of the observation platform which is about 4' off the ground, I also placed it so it could not be seen by the general public but was within easy reach (for those in a wheelchair it would make an easy grab). After the cache was visited a couple of times I went to go check on the swag - I like to keep my caches full of goodies.
It was gone. I crawled around under the deck for 10 minutes and could not find it (not an easy task with my limitations) I was amazed. So I went home and disabled the cache.
I started thinking about it and though to e mail the last cacher to ask if he knew where the cache was. I e mail that cacher who said he would go back and check to see if it was there. Indeed I got an e mail not long after - he said it was there so I thanked him and went back. Still could not find it.
I e mailed again. He said he would go out and take a photo of where it was. I thought this was a very generous offer and thanked him again. Instead he went to the disabled cache took out a geocoin and never followed through. I thought this was unfair to everyone else since the cache was actively disabled AND he never did e mail me about where he has rehidden the cache...if that is the reality. I e mailed him to let him know I thought it was uncool to take anything from a cache that was actively disabled stillhave not heard anything.
I think it is kind of greedy to be taking a coin out of a cache that is disabled and to offer to help someone then blow them off because they got something they took unfairly.
Let me know what you think...
My plan is to get my friends 10 year old kid to go out and help me find and replace the cache where it was originally placed. Hopefully I can make it clear it should be replaced in that one area to make it easy for eveyone.

I love all the photos that are posted, both on the trail, during the hunt and those detailing the cache containers. I am curious, what kind of camera do you prefer to take with you while you are geocaching?

I am looking for a sit on top kayak, single or double (no inflatable, no ruder) Ocean Kayak is the type I like the best. I am on a limited income (due to a physical disability and therefore can not afford more than $250.00 - and would probably have to make payments at that. I have a GARMIN etrex legend (blue) that I can use for a down payment.

Well, my understanding is that you have an OPTION to trade swag, that it is not a rule. Some people only log their name in the log book and again on the website when they find the cache.
Swag can be of your choosing. It can be something as simple as going to go get some dollar coins instead of paper dollar bills to put in the cache. Some people have signature items which they put into every cache they trade in (some caches dont have enough room to trade items and are log only) You can put in whatever you want. I can suggest you remember that cachers are of all ages and so you might not want to just put in toys. My swag is inheritly dependant on my cash flow and I purchase alot of things at the dollar store including small first aid kits and manicure sets. Many stores have dollar areas, where you can get flashlights, carabiners etc. Some caches are theme oriented and the cache owner might request certain items be traded (coins from another country, key chains, plastic soliders, items for your pet dog etc). Most cachers have a motto, trade up, trade even or dont trade - there are some cachers which dont put alot of energy into getting swag and there has been some cheaper swag - things from gumball machines - and many cachers are not in appreciation os this type of swag. Some cachers even have their own coins made, or make their own signature coins or items out of polymer clay. There are alot of very creative people out there, I have even seen personalized pin buttons made. It is up to you, goo dluck in your hunt and welcome to geocaching

Suzuki 650 - best bike on the market right now. If you prefer you can get a smaller bike, on you can take off road, or a Harley - it all depends on what you like. I suggest checking Auto Trader and Craigslist for ideas. Go out and educate yourself, hop on as many bikes aas you can, look into the write ups and try and find a bike someone else got before his wife okayed the purchase....low miles, good condition, good price. DONT FORGET THE HELMET AND THE LEATHERS. Good Luck

Disabled is supposed to always be temporary.
A listing should be Archived if it is a permanent removal of the cache.
Yeah here is the rub, "suppose to always be temporary" "A listing should be Archived" I often come across listing which are temporarily disabled for a long time, and not archived....oh well

I use 3X5 cards to cache since I dont have the funds to go paperless. I check the listings every couple of days or so since Im not a paying member to see if there are any changes.
I often see caches go on the disabled list and never come off and then some go on disabled list for maintenance and come back on again at a leter date.
I was wondering if there will ever be a feature for chosing to disable a cache permanently or disable it temporarily so those of us who are checking dont need to recheck all the time to see if a cache is going to come off the disabled list and become active again or if it will stay off the active list permamnently. Thanks

All the information you guys have shared is very helpful. I first started out with a nice bound book, but quickly realized my mistake. I rewrote most of the caches I was interested in into an alphabetic order in another booklet, but it filled up so quickly and became too expensive. I am going to try 3X5 cards for awhile to see how they work, I write out the name of the cache, Difficulty, Terrain, size and coords and the GC # (in case I have somehow screwed up on something else I can find the cache page again) I also write down the information people have written in logs about terrain (I have a physical disability which slows me down alot) or spoilers about the camo. I also have drawn a little map on the back because Im visually oriented and can pick things out faster that way. I have resisted printing things out because of the prohibitive cost of ink and paper (a ball point pen last longer and costs alot less) It may take a bit more time, but I can keep the information with me while I run through the county on errands, and gives me something to do on these wickedly hot summer days when I can not go out. I may graduate to printing out information in the future. I think it would be easier, especially when you have not transposed numbers and have spent an afternoon poking around an area which is not even close to the cache site. Thanks everyone

Does anyone else cache with all the information on paper? If so what is your prefered method, 3X5 cards, a binder or other bound type of paper or just printing out the information.

It is that time of year again and I was wondering how we all here at the geocaching community can assist with those less fortunate. During my quest for good inexpensive swag I am now starting to think ahead and have purchased two of everything, one for geocaching and one for the toys for tots barrel. I was wondering if the geocaching community was planning anything special or if Im way off the mark here and should not even be posting...

I have no preference. I love looking through everything to see what I like. I have seen handmade rope bracelets, action figures, dollar bills, Winnebago collector cards (who knew?), carabiners, key chains, small frisbees, golfballs, coins (Susan B Anthony's are popular - I get mine at the stamp machine in the post office, it gives them as change), beads, bottle openers - usually the different colored metal ones which come in different shapes and sizes, postcards, wallets you name it...Target has been a good place to get carabiners, first aid kits, and the like at their new dollar section, and Michaels has dollar sections as well, I was able to get those six pack tubes of small playdough for a dollar each.

Until my knees blew out I never used them. One of my hiking buddies uses them and this last winter, where we had to hike over a couple of tricky areas (fording creeks and traversing mudslides) I had to borrow them a couple of times, now I carry them on a regular basis. I got a pair of Eddie Bauer ones at Target for $20...they work just as well as my friends $69 pair and if they get beat up, I dont care....

You might try calling a local pest exterminator and asking if they have removed any paper wasp nests of late. The problem I see with any type of these nests as caches is someone new taking up residence. Paper wasp nests will degrade over time since they are so thin, so making one out of paper mache might be a way to go, you might wrap the paper around a pencil to get that cell structure just right....good luck - be sure and vary the colors, one cell might have three different colors from light brown to dark brown and gray tones.

While caching I always take my GPSr - it has all the information on where the goodies are hidden, my compass and a map of the area (Topozone print out). While Orienteering, I also take all three. I use long/lat because it was what I was taught to use first, it is what my GSPr is set for. I am learning to use UTM - slowly, but am willing.
I do know people have been using long/lat for a long time without issue. Just because UTM comes along does not mean it is better or easier for everyone. I for one am glad to have the choice to choose.

I have less than 100 finds, and I have placed a cache which I am not afraid to say I am very proud of. I spent alot of time and energy on it and alot of thought went into it and some of the top cachers in my area signed my log with words of appreciation. I think if you continue to want rules added to a great sport, you will have nothing but a book of rules. Look what excessive rules have done to a once great game called football.

Pelican cases are probably the best "plastic" type cases on the market but they are very expensive. Too bad the micros in your area seem to be all the same type of container. I have run across micros in the form of film containers, altoids tins, a bolt etc...I live in an area of some pretty creative cache hiders which makes caching so much more rewarding.
