  1. A scam in that they promise a lifetime update, then make it impossible to download updated maps to your Garmin device. For example, I bought my Nuvi 1300T this last July since my Nuvi 260W was stolen. The 1300T offered lifetime updates. I went to the Garmin site, downloaded the Lifetime Updater software and then tried to download the new map info (2012.3) for the Lower 48 states and it goes into "Preparing Files to Download" but never gets past that. I'm now trying it on the second computer after 4-5 failures on my work PC. Eventually on that PC, I would get an error message: "Lifetime Updater had an error and had to stop; contact Garmin Customer Service if the problem persists" (or words to that effect). Now, I'm beginning to feel that the "Lifetime Updates" was nothing more than a scam. Yea, they offer "lifetime updates", it's just that the download process errors out and makes it impossible. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks,
  2. Does the DVD explain why? .... Nope, not a word. You can order it, it's free. Takes about 3 days to get there. Thanks, AR-15
  3. I just got this DVD and watched it the other night. One of the first things it said to do was to turn off WAAS, no if's, and's or but's. http://www.nohvcc.org/IMAGES/prgps.asp Comments? AR-15
  4. What is the "secret" Magellan menu to turn off WAAS and is that something I want to do? I live in North Alabama. The DVD discussed here http://www.nohvcc.org/IMAGES/prgps.asp says to to turn off WAAS. Lo and behold, a review of my Magellan Sportrak Pro shows no menu setup to turn off the WAAS feature. Thanks, AR-15
  5. Marky, What's the bearing between these 2 points? Thanks, AR-15
  6. OK, I must be dumb this morning, it's not working for me. Here are the 2 waypoints: Waypoint 1: WGS84 Map Datum/ Lat-Long Coordinate System (Deg.DDDDD): 63.96210 degrees N 145.74008 degrees W Waypoint 2: WGS84 Map Datum/ Lat-Long Coordinate System (Deg.DDDDD): 63.96245 degrees N 145.73379 degrees W These should be about 1200 feet apart with a bearing of about 65 degrees between them. Can someone help me out? Thanks, AR-15
  7. Guys, I need help with my Magellan Sportrak Pro. I have 2 waypoints that I need the bearing and distance between them. I can get either of the 2 waypoints with my current position, but I need B&D between the 2 of them. The manual was no help, that I could see. Thanks for any and all help. Thanks, AR-15
  8. OK, I uploaded V4.06 last night and, despite it rebooting my PC twice, I finally uploaded the new firmware to the GPS unit. While hooked up and running, I downloaded my file of waypoints and 4 regions that I had previously created. Everything works now, but don't ask me what I did to make it work. OBTW: Magellan has the worse help instructions on the planet. Nothing went as described in either their MapSend Streets Help files nor on their site for uploading the new firmware. Thanks, AR-15
  9. Cornix, V1.00C was on the upload software CD that came with MapSend Streets. However, I just fired up my Magallel and it says that it has V4.04. I'm going to upload the latest software and see what happens. Thanks, AR-15
  10. TWO, I don't have anything else plugged into the PC other than the normal mouse/keyboard. TL, how do I check the comm port on the PC? I'm doing a search right now with no results. I have Windows XP. Thanks, AR-15
  11. I have a Magellen Sportrak Pro that I am trying to upload my existing list of waypoints back into the GPS unit. I had to download the waypoints to download the latest software update (V1.00C) that I recieved with my Magellan MapSend Streets software. Anyway, when I first check the connection with the "Options/GPS Settings" commands in MapSend, the PC will successfully detect the Sportrak Pro. When I go to upload the waypoints, I get an error message saying there is no connection or the GPS unit is off. When I go back to Options/GPS Settings menu, it shows the comm port as "Busy" and will not reconnect. It advise to have the "NMEA" off and everytime I check it, it is off. I have the baud rate set at 4800. What's the problem and how do I correct it? Thanks, AR-15
  12. I'm not impressed with their service either. I ordered their Map Send Streets software for my Sportrak Pro over the holidays. Last Tuesday (Jan. 21), I sent an e-mail asking if the CD would work with my SP since the CD cover stated that it was for the M-330. I got an automatic "we're forwarding your e-mail to Customer Service" e-mail, but other than that, no response. Thanks, AR-15
  13. On 12/20 I ordered a Magellan Sportrak Pro from Ritz Camera for $199, plus some misc. stuff like batteries, chargers, etc. At the time of the order, they stated that the unit was on backorder and they expected to ship by Jan. 3 or so. A week later I got an e-mail that said the new ship date would be Jan. 24. A disappointment, but I could live with it. On Jan. 21, I e-mailed a request to Ritz Camera for status of my order. The answer was an e-mail the next day stating that the new ship date was now Feb. 21, 2003. The had not shipped anything and they had not charged my credit card. I did a quick search on Biz Rate for the latest price on Sportrak Pro's and the lowest price was $229. Of the 3 web sites that I looked at, all three had Sportrak Pro's in stock, according to their respective web sites. One of the sites was GPS4fun, which is located in Decatur, AL, near where I live. I didn't find out about these people until after Xmas vacation since they do not advertise in the Huntsville Yellow Pages. In any event, I visited the GPS4fun store and they told me that the $199 was below their cost. OK, not something unusual for a competitor to say in order to win a sale. But then, they also said there is no reason for any M Sportrak Pro's to be on back order since you can get them from Magellan. This is consistent with my research from the night before where Sportrak Pro's were readily available. The GPD4Fun's price was $249. But this price included the Magellan $50 rebate, which the Rtiz Camera site never mentions. Long story short, I canceled the Ritz Camera order and bought it direct from GPS4Fun. I don't know how Ritz expected to win by not shipping me my GPS unit and keeping me thinking I was going to get one for $20-30 cheaper than anyone else. Needless to say, I won't be ordering from them again. Comments? Thanks, AR-15
  14. OK, it came down to the Garmin Legend, Magellan 330, Magellan Meridan Gold and the Magellan Sportrak Pro. I picked the Sportrack Pro. $199 plus a $50 rebate from Magellan. None of the four take an external antenna, all were about the same (to my virgin eyes, anyway) and the Sportrak Pro seemed the best for the money. My limit was $200. With car accessories, battery charger and 8 NiMH batteries plus map software came to around $300. I internetted it so I'll report when it arrives. Thanks for all the help! AR-15.
  15. OK, Emap is around the same price range, roughly. But it doesn't have WAAS capability. Is this important? Peter, you caught that about me didn't you? I'm not so sure I'd call it impulse buying as opposed to making up my mind, fast! All help and comments appreciated, I'm learning fast! Thanks, AR-15
  16. Guys, My original plan went to heck in basket, so here I am +8 months later and still haven't bought a GPS unit. Now instead of ETrex vs. M-315, I'm now thinking of the Garmin Etrex Legend. Around $200 plus $50 rebate AND my wife says she'll buy one for me. So what's the verdict this time? Thanks, AR-15
  17. Bizrate stated that these 2 units were equivalent, not me, I don't know enough to know what's equivalent or not. From the comments above, it appears the Mag 315 is more robust, but has no maps; the Garmin eMap has maps but is not robust and I should buy a more expensive unit anyway. Thanks for all the comments, keep them coming! AR-15
  18. I'm brand new to GPS/geocaching and to these forums. My first look at GPS units at Bizrate.com leads me to the Magellan 315 or the Garmin eMAP. I'm a hunter, 4 wheeler, hiker, probably geocach'er when I get a GPS unit and auto traveler (specifically the SW deserts). I need a unit that can go and be powered by my '98 Dodge Ram for trips. It must also be hand held. 12 channels, 500 waypoints etc. should be standard. Which unit do you recommend and why? Thanks, AR-15
