    NGSCS

Thought you guys might find this interesting/useful: http://www.metzgerwillard.us/ngscs/ngscs.html
  2. You can get a 1 gig card for $47 or $45 from NewEgg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList....&Subcategory=68
  3. For the software problem where it won't write to the card, check on the Garmin web site and see if they have an update. Mine wouldn't load maps to the card until I updated it.
  4. I'm guessing that you had your gps connected to the computer and transferred the maps to the gps unit. Next time try using a card reader. MapSource will save the file(s) to the card directly when it's in a card reader. Much faster.
  5. http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetai...oductCode=82989 http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/s.nl/sc.2.../it.A/id.953/.f Both are backordered though. Off topic and I apologize... but where did you get your 1Gig MicroSD card Wojo65? Thanks in advance!
  6. Okay, got the waypoint problem fixed. Whew, thought I did the thing in. Thought I had a good excuse to get a new CSX Next time don't try so hard!
  7. What's the best way to "let them know"? I sent a query to tech support and am wondering if it will go anywhere past the person at Garmin who responded: Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I would be happy to assist you. I am not aware of any plans to expand the number of waypoints on the GPSMAP 60CS. The Micro SD flash card on the new CX units will be only for mapping detail, you will not be able to load waypoints onto it. Thank you for your inquiry and for choosing Garmin. If you need any other assistance with this, please feel free to call our 800-800-1020 line during our business hours of 8:00 to 5:00 Central Time, Monday through Friday.
  8. I think you both should share the same financial burden, so both of you should buy new units; be different and get Lowrance units.
  9. Interesting; I was able to transfer from Mapsource to a cf card. It created a folder "garmin" on the card and in that was the file gmapsupp.img. The card had been formated with FAT; it is a dinky 32 meg card that I got with a camera.
  10. Ah, cool. I should try putting a cf card in my card reader when I run Mapsource. But maybe it won't give me that option since it's licensed to a handheld unit and it knows it doesn't have removable memory. So I'd guess the answer to the original poster's question is probably the same as for the car units; they could download the pdf manual for one of them.
  11. I understand now; thanks for the explanation peter.
  12. All this talk about batteries losing their charge by sitting unused got me wondering; how do you check the charge? I have a voltmeter; is that good enough?
  13. How would you transfer map data using a card reader? The MapSource software only wants to talk to a Garmin gps. It seems to me that GSAK is the same way. (I'm at work and the toys are at home.)
  14. Thanks for the clarification on NMEA using the round power connector. Now that you mention that I vaguely remember reading that in the manual when I first got it. I'd forgotten it and was assuming that they did NMEA over usb. Sorry for the misinformation.
  15. Timpat, he said he was using the basemaps; "Using only the basemap that came with the GPS I was able to locate marine objects such as tidal stations". Salmon_run, I'd call Garmin. Their tech support is excellent.
  16. Maybe they're using some "legacy" software that only knows how to do NMEA over serial. Or they didn't know that it's possible to do NMEA with USB.
  17. I have the 60CS and it has USB only. It supports NMEA in and out. It works with GSAK for downloading waypoints from the pc to the gps. (I haven't ever tried uploading but I don't doubt that it would work.)
  18. Try also the forums on AximSite. http://www.aximsite.com/ They have ones devoted to using a GPS with your Axim.
  19. Hmm, the online specs say 1000 waypoints, for both the 60CS and the 60CSx. My memory is that GSAK only lets me load 500 or thereabouts. I need to test that... I see; the default number for GSAK is 500 but you can change that. Even so, my county has 1028 benchmarks (which is what I do, benchmark hunting, not geocaching).
  20. I don't think the 60cs came with the Recreational maps. Mine came with a stripped down version of the street maps; just the main highways and such. No stores, food places, or points of interest like that. This stripped down North America map is built into the unit; you don't load it. My impression from reading the manual for the 60CSx is that it's essentially the same as the 60CS except for the Micro SD card and it has SiRF. I'm curious to know if it has the same amount of internal ram and if all of it can now be used for waypoints. The 60CS is limited to something like 500, which may seem like a lot but turns out to not be when you live in an urban area.
  21. Where do you plan on getting the 1gb micro sd card? All I can find is the 512 mb Sandisk. I played around with MapSource, and all of California, where I live, takes less than 128 mb. 124.4 mb if I include Reno and Las Vegas, where my niece and brother live.
  22. Larry LaPrise Dies at 93 With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person, which almost went unnoticed last week. Larry LaPrise, the man who wrote "The Hokey Pokey," died peacefully at age 93. The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in . . . and then the trouble started.
  23. I think there are some on the left under Links on this page. http://www.mappinghacks.com/
