  1. @off grid: If you return to this discussion and my guess above is correct, then you need to understand that people are allowed to log archived caches if they're still there. If you don't like this, you need to go out and retrieve the containers you abandoned, and then the logs will stop.

    ^^

    Worth repeating.

your just assuming i left the containers there ...yep cause i would do that.......i took them away other people kept putting them back. so lets not just assume

its archived for a reason or disabled for a reason the last two caches i tried to archive that the reviewer ended up doing were because people felt the need to keep putting a container back there after it was taken away to be archived. so that was an issue. and when you remove the container why do you feel the need to put another back

and in response to the other stuff you decided to add like that you know i live in your area and here comes another non productive. was that really relevant? no so keep it to yourself

  3. So Im not understanding something here.

I try and get rid of geocaches to help out the area and have new ones come into the area.

I repeat try and get rid of them and its nothing but a whine fest. You get someone who wants them to stay there I guess I archived three of them and they still said oh they are there and people were still going to them. So theres supposed to be no geocache there or anything and someone there is one after its being removed. Why do some geocachers feel self entitled to keep a cache there?

  4. its not a matter of them being properly maintained its called change the caches every few years or your going to get people that don't want to do this game anymore because the caches are the same every single time im in an area where i look at my map and see no really new geocaches just all old smiley faces and caches i wont bother going to because they are either just stupid or im not wasting my time finding a micro that's my choice of course but leaving event caches everywhere is just poor taste
    De gustibus non est disputandum.

The guidelines don't address matters of "poor taste". And the volunteer reviewers don't enforce matters of "poor taste".

    And that's a good thing.

One person wants caches to live forever. Another wants owners to churn their cache locations to provide ongoing opportunities for more smileys. You can't please everyone.

not for smileys for more adventures to maybe re visit a place and create new memories learn something new at that place that you didn't before ive seen places where new geocaches got put up and they were recycled and they had knowledge of the area and native artifacts and that wasn't their before so i learned something new by someone else taking over the spot and adding to the geocaching experience

  5. Since when is a puzzle/mystery not a real geocache?

since they stay their for years never being found since they clutter up a perfectly good park with their cache that hardly anyone can ever solve

The guidelines do not require cache owners to make caches easy to solve/find, nor do the guidelines require cache owners to remove caches on the basis of find frequency.

i know the guidelines state that they the owner doesn't have to make the geocache easy to solve trust me cause the cache is supposed to be at the posted coordinates and half the " hard geocaches" were no where even near the coordinates. I guess in the end we will just end up with old hag and old geocaches that clutter.

The posted coordinates for a puzzle cache are virtual, so you are free to hide a physical cache near them. This is very clear in the guidelines.

If you feel that caches are not being maintained properly, I encourage you to use the Needs Maintenance log to report problems.

ill get on that but they will still be there but thanks for the suggestion

Again, see the guideline on cache permanence. Cache owners are not required to archive caches to make room for new ones after any period of time. If you want to see new caches on the map, get out and find new places to hide them. Recycling the same old spots just so people can rack up more finds isn't really what this game is about.

    See the guidelines here:

    https://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx

wow no imagination than you don't have. you take away a geocache from a spot its called you reinvent it maybe change the hint change the container change the purpose of it..but hey maybe im new on that one ill get right on finding new places to hide them with all those hags and garbage ones around and question mark caches always blocking good spots but hey i will get right on that thanks for the suggestion!

  6. Now I already know that their and there is probably messed up so sorry Nazi grammar people.

I was wondering why the hag caches are not taken away after the hag event is done they just seem to clutter up good areas and most of them I noticed aren't taken care of and are left as little tiny blood tubes in a forest.

I was also wondering why if a ? hasn't been found isn't it delete and why would you have question mark geocaches in a park when you could have a real geocache. Most of these ones haven't even been visited in my are in awhile and their geo clutter or the geocaches where the owners don't care about the cache. Why are these not taken away.

I guess this shall never be answered as why they are still their for years to come haha

I encourage you to read the cache placement guidelines, particularly the section on cache permanence. A cache may be placed to coincide with an event, but it is still a geocache and must adhere to those guidelines. The fact that it has "HAG" in the name does not mean it needs to be removed after a short period of time. Caches are not meant to be temporary, even if you don't like them.

oh trust me with geocachers ive encouraged myself to read everything as ive noticed that they can become quite arrogant and self centered.

its an event cache get rid of it they shouldn't be allowed to still be their years later didn't know that hide and go 2012 was still going....

  9. Godwin's Law on first post. Might be a new record.

Forgive my ignorance, but what's a "hag" cache/Event?

they have an event called hide and go caches they hide them in parks and stuff like that and their supposed to be easy access theirs prizes for first one to find them all and other things like that but it only lasts a few weeks and than the event is done but the geoclutter hags are still out their for years to come

Please refer to the guideline on cache permanence. Placing caches for an event and removing them shortly afterwards is not permitted.

so we support geo clutter than I see I see that's why theres still geoclutter hag caches from two years ago still around...

If you find that a cache is poorly maintained, use the Needs Maintenance log to alert the cache owner. If you find that it goes a long time without maintenance despite the Needs Maintenance log, use the Needs Archived log to bring it to a reviewer's attention.

If the issue is that the cache isn't to your taste or ability, that's not a maintenance issue.

haha yea ill get on that and ill take you to tons of geocaches that still look like garbage

  14. Yes, it has been argued for and against the idea that smartphone cachers have hurt this hobby. If nothing else, I will agree that they hurt the trackables aspect of the game.

Agreed, One of my trackables was picked up by a person that had only six caches, and they kept the trackable I assume as they have not cached again since and the trackable is MIA...

  15. We are new to geocaching. I have an idea about what's an appropriate trade item to leave in a geocache. But some of the items in the caches we have found seemed inappropriate or wrong in some way. For example, numerous business cards (John Jones, realtor; Bob's Car Wash; Freddy's Tatoo Parlor); cigarettes; crummy little rocks picked up off a road surface; pennies. My neophyte opinion is that such items do not belong in a geocache. But what type of items should be removed from a geocache by one who finds the cache? We left all the business cards, rocks and pennies but removed the cigarettes because they just seemed so wrong.

Any advice from experienced geocachers about what should be removed from a cache by one who finds it? Would you remove cigarettes, business cards, crummy rocks, pennies, something else?

    Being on Vancouver Island,

I have found Rolling papers and three joints! (Not joking)

  16. I would not even begin to think that I could fight off a cougar with a pocket knife. If I thought a cougar encounter was a likely scenario I would likely carry a gun (can you even do that in Canada?) or at least some of that pepper spray they make for bears. I think that would be far more effective than a knife.

Ever try to pick up a feral cat that wants no part of it? You'd get cut up pretty good. Now multiply that cat's size 30 or 40 times 😳

you cant carry a gun in a park in canada

  17. Obviously traditional caches - or any cache with a physical container at the final - are probably not a good idea in airports (especially in the paranoid US), but I'm curious why there are no virtual/Earth caches in airports. Is it not allowed? I read through many of the posting rules and didn't see anything specifically.

I considered because it might require payment (at least for caches in the majority of most airports) but especially when laid over a "multi-virtual" would help pass the time and I've seen other caches that require payment so that's probably not it (well, to be legal anyway; ex: WA state parks).

Are setting up virtual/Earth caches in airports allowed?

I was a transport Canada security supervisor (I carried a Gun) and no type of activity like this would be allowed in a International airport due to security regulations (in Canada) of course it does not stop people from trying, We had an issue with Munzee's to.

  18. Check this cache (GC4W8R9)on Google Earth at street level. Would you say this is on private property? There is no mention on the cache page for permission. Today I posted a NM after no response from the 2 reviewers I contacted, the COs and no change on the cache page. I was going to go to the house when I found it but it was early morning and didn't want to disturb them.

And you are surprised by this, with as many finds as you have?

  19. Ammo boxes can easily be mistaken as terrorist bombs, etc. They can get rusty and cut your fingers up, and they smell funny sometimes, I think the smell might be toxic or something. This one time a kid found an ammo box and decided to use ammo for other purposes, and this is no good! I also hear that sometimes potheads use ammoboxes to store their weed and that isn't good either because somebody might put weed in a geocache and then kids could also find that, which would be bad because the kids should be out finding regular geocaches, the good kind in tupperware, because those are nice.

We don'd need stinky metal boxes stinking up the game, let's stick with tupperware, its what works and it doesn't leak at all.

Ammo cans are the best ammio cans always get a favorite point in my books

  21. The real question is - what are you going to do about it?

If you don't like the quality of the caches you find, then find a great spot and hide your own. However, please make sure you're ready to do this. Go out and find a hundred or so before you decide to hide your own. There's nothing worse than a new cacher who wants to hide their own cache and the coords are off or many other issues (not that experienced cachers are immune to that).

What's with the having to find a hundred before you make a hide thats insane.there's nothing you can do because a Geo trash cache apprantley is OK and that's usual about half of them
