This isn't that hard... I too appreciate knowing how multi it is going to be and if my kids can do it in one trip. Some poeple seem to want to go out of their way NOT to provide this.. Shaun

IMO, people that get pissed off over proxies and coin pictures posing as the original coins are the same people that make off with people's coins. Shaun

Anything to do with someone here?
ShaunEM replied to teamhillside's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
Too many wet blankets in the world. Ohh what a horrible thing to do to that innocent bridge. Think of the children! Shaun -
In short, GC.com makes it too complicated to add pictures. Shaun

Advice: The angry Individual
ShaunEM replied to Team Total Perspective Vortex's topic in General geocaching topics
I would have explained to him (either verbally or through physical action) that car > bike. This isn't about geocaching, this is about crazy. Shaun -
Can I get a listing of my "Did Not Find" caches?
ShaunEM replied to Clan Gunn's topic in How do I...?
What I do is go into Geocaches from the first menu dropdown. Once in there at the top of your recent cache activity there are a series of options, found, not found, attended, all logs.. etc. If you click on didn't find, you will get a list of your DNFs all the back to the beginning of time I believe. Same as you, I go back later and see if it was just me, or if the cache was actually missing by looking at it's future logs. Shaun -
IF Groundspeak and garmin can't tell you what the problem is, you aren't going to figure it out. I have had this happen on my etrex 20. It has to do with reading/parsing the GPX file. The device just goes "belly up". This would happen with gpx files directly from Groundspeak PQs as well as GSAK imports. I keep my GPX on an external SD card for that reason now. Shaun

Maybe I don't need my screen protector after all. Maybe the folks who made this video just got lucky. I used my Oregon 650 on a trip to the Catskills earlier this week, and was going after a cache hidden under a bridge. I had it hooked to a belt loop using the carabiner that comes with it. I was clambering up some rocks, and the GPS must have bumped up against one of the aforementioned rocks. The next time I looked at it, here's what I saw: Those are deep scratches. I contacted Garmin by e-mail, and they've offered to replace the unit for $110 (guess such scratches aren't covered by the warranty). They would normally replace it with a refurbished unit, but they don't have any refurbished samples available yet, so I'll get a brand new unit. Looks as if I'll be going back to my trusty 550t for the time being. --Larry I did the exact same thing with my etrex. Now I never put my GPS facing outward when I latch it onto a beltloop or otherwise if I am going to be swinging around rocks or metal bridges. I suspect this is going to be a common GPS injury. After I did this bought a screen protector and a scratch buff kit (look up Novus plastic polish). I was able to get the scratch out mostly so you can't see much under the screen protector. Shaun

I have seen them in the wild recently. I have seen them getting points from finders. Put one out if you want, but not around genuine sprinkler systems. And perhaps place them in a garden patch or somewhere that can handle it being placed. You can also paint a GC logo on it.. if that helps. But if you are looking for the company line.. then they are not allowed, period. Shaun

Sorry, but any cache close to a popular trail leaves at least a geotrail (quite obvious sometimes) to the cache. No helping that.. The CO monitors the area and if it's being impacted, they archive or move the cache location. Shaun

I had one re-appear when I had lost all hope. I figured someone had thrown it into the ocean. Now it is moving through Germany. http://coord.info/TB3ZP30 Shaun

Two kinds of CO.. 1) They want to take you somewhere good, to find something good, have a good time. 2) Want you mucking around in a pile of dog feces looking for the golden lump of turd. They laugh and laugh..think they are awesome. I go for the first and just ignore the second. Shaun

Definitely my favorite. I only managed to get one actual geocache at the event. But they were throwing candy in the street and my son and I had a great time at the GPS adventure maze. Shaun Edit: I can't spell.

What interesting things other than caches have you found.
ShaunEM replied to Bassbully's topic in General geocaching topics
Not an FTF you want.. to be sure... -
Yea, stop putting them out.. or put out proxies instead. It sucks.. but people really can't resist keeping these. I can't see it ALWAYS being children... its too bad. they are fun to find. I just had one re-activate after 3 years lost in Maui... so anything is possible. Shaun

If the cache is well thought out and has a clear path of progression.. who gives a fart what hoops someone has to go through? I 100% disagree with the reviewer and would have replied with something like, "Life is so fleeting.. why get out of bed at all....eh?" I commend you for trying to create something, even if it might be a little bit elaborate to some/many. Shaun

What do you consider to be good swag?
ShaunEM replied to Amethyst Moon's topic in General geocaching topics
I have been doing cache maint. recently and I have a few additions: 1) Don't leave your stinking business cards.. 2) Don't take my log bag... 3) Don't leave swag that prevents a locknlock from sealing shut. DONT DO IT! It ruins EVERYTHING in the cache after the next rainfall/dew event. Shaun -
I have the garmin mount, and I would have purchased the ram mount above if I had known about it.. that looks pretty good! Shaun

Placing a cache in my front yard - good or bad?

You would be surprised how many of these DON'T have permission... I ignore them 100%. -
Magellan Explorist GC Battery Life Problem
ShaunEM replied to FredPhil96's topic in GPS technology and devices
You can also get this if the batteries are not very good. You can try turning down the brightness to see if the problem subsides. If you are using batteries that don't give out enough juice.. it can cause this. The GC I had would go ALL DAY on one set of energizer rechargeable. As I recall the battery gauge was never very reliable on that device. Never full. most of the time at 50% dropped lower right before it gave up the fight. Shaun -
I have an etrex 20 and have had the GC. Ordering the GC was probably the right option if you were picking between that and the etrex 10. If the lack of detailed maps annoy you, get the etrex 20 or 30 later on (or whatever is down the pipe when the time comes). Shaun

Should I delete my Needs Maintenance logs after CO fixes issue?
ShaunEM replied to mud plodders's topic in How do I...?
Are you searching out these caches yourself before posting a NM log? I know nothing pisses me off more than someone posting a NM log on a cache simply because they could not find it.. (or in this case because previous posters could not find it). IMO, don't delete any logs.. even the ones entered in error. Log is a log is log. Shaun -
The prize for someone getting a FTF is the FTF. I can see providing something at the end of a long puzzle.. if you don't think the solving of this long puzzle first is reward enough. Shaun
