My dog is a geocaching pro....lol...sometimes he gets a little caried away and I have to explain teeth marks on the container in my log...lol...I always carry an extra container for when the cache becomes his chew toy before I can get it out of his mouth..."Bad dog"....lol

Pshycaesthetic is not the only person that have said the rechargeable pack that comes with the Oregon leaves alot to be desired....I have googled some reviews and it seems to be a.common theme with owners... Not even close to a.deal breaker but it is just another reason for me to stick with the 600 since I dont really want the camera..

I have heard that the rechargeable battery pack from Garmin is junk.....

This is not entirely accurate. The Montana uses the old pressure-sensitive touch screen. The Oregon uses a capacitive touch screen (reads electrical signals from your fingers just like your smartphone). The Oregon can use multi-touch gestures: pinch to zoom, two finger rotate the map, etc. These are not available on the Montana. While it seems like a minor difference, it can affect ergonomics and how you use the unit. Thanks for that info....I just did the side by side comparison at Garmin and must have missed it.......I have heard great things about the new Oregon screens...especially under daylight..

I don't think it is but it would be nice.....Especially when you are tying to verify that you actually are getting closer to the GZ...

Actually, it is well known that many, if not most, cachers don't give a crap about the caches they find. They don't re-hide them properly and they plunder the stash. Cache owners are responsible for reasonable maintenance. Cache finders are responsible for reasonable care of the caches they find. The OP is pointing the finger in the wrong direction as are you. . I didn't stereotype hiders or point a finger at anyone....I am just asking for clarification on who has ultimate responsibility for the Cache.....And as far as maintenance it is the owner.....Just as you stated...... For you to lump all players into "most don't give a crap about the Cache" is weak at best.... I provided the clarification. The problem you speak of is mostly caused by cache finders not lazy cache owners. I did not lump "all" players into the don't give a crap category. I said many, if not most, cachers. That's what I sense after placing 75 caches with more than 200 stages and visiting most of them on a fairly regular basis. I see that you have not hidden so much as one cache, so you are really in no position to comment on this. You simply don't have the facts. Go out and place some caches and put some decent swag in them. Come back in six months and we can talk. . If you read the entire post you would see that I stated right up front that I haven't hidden a cache and why.......Basically I don't want to do it half a**ed.....That is why I am here... to educate myself on the whys and why nots before I jump in with both feet but alot of the info seems to conflict...I guess it is like finding..Everyone has their own way of interpreting the game and the way they choose to play...If I choose to keep a highly maintained Cache loaded with Swag that is on me...If someone else wants to keep a different level of maintenance and appeal I guess that is up to them.... ...Don't understand why never placing a Cache would invalidate my opinion...but OK...I've never been in Politics either but believe me I have an opinion there... I am thinking about upgrading GPSs and am looking at the Garmin Montana 600t and the Oregon 600t.....Both look pretty close to identical as far as technology other than the Glonass capabilities of the Oregon....Does the Glonass acquire satellites quicker and is it more accurate??...A guick search here showed alot of users running with the Glonass off to conserve batteries and other issues..... I like the Montana because of the bigger screen......

A quick Google search....My link Clearly shows that the "Swag" is important to a large number of players.......Not saying that Swag is the owners responsibility but it does play a role in why many people play the game....

So if a Cache owner places a cache with no swag when does the trading start???.I am speaking on right sized traditionals onviously..If an owner wants his cache to be swagless he could put that in the description... Part of the fun of placing a cache to me seems to be puting something cool in the Cache for the FTF..

The OP kind of hit on both what I would consider Maintenance and Swag...So that is part of what I am getting at as far as "ultimate responsibility"..(Maintenance)...and may have been part of my confusion... It's all good though and that is why I read this forum to continue to educate myself on geoettiquite so I don't make simple mistakes based on ignorance.....

I like 5.11 cargo pants, Merril Gore-tex boots and a quality shirt...... Good waterproof boots are the most critical here in Michigan.....I have tried boots that say "waterproof" and they aren't waterproof most of the time...Pay the extra dollars and stick with Gore-tex... I always wear long pants to help battle Ticks, Mosquitos and Poison Ivy.....

Nobodies stopping *you* from going out and planting a bunch of caches for your grandkids to find, if that's so important. Only cost ya a plastic container, a pad and a pencil. This is true. For your grandson, he isn't going to care one bit about logging the find, so you wouldn't even need to have the caches published on this or any website. Just get some containers, fill them with stuff that your grandson would like, place them somewhere nearby and take your grandson along to find them. He'll be thrilled and you can go and pick up the container afterwards to reuse another time. Cache owners are not required to supply anything beyond a container, a logbook and good coordinates to find the cache. If those items are in good repair, a CO has done their job well enough. I'm not sure why the onus always falls on the cache owner when swag degrades to broken toys and garbage...what about the people coming along taking the good stuff and leaving junk? Cachers preach about "trade up/trade even" but most caches end up with junk in them. Most don't start out with junk, so how did this happen? Swag is a community effort. I guess just like anything else in Geocaching everyone has a different way in which they play and percieve the "Game"..(which is Ok..)...and probably why I haven't posted a Cache yet..(plan on doing one soon)...When I post a Cache I want it to be something positive for the finder and since it basically has my name on it will take some pride in the maintenance and would hope it appeals to all ages........I would hope to have "eyes on" a traditional larger cache that I placed at least once a month... (just to point out, we do carry bags of extra toys to place in ravaged Caches...) I clean out Caches regularly that are filled with wet nasty junk and place new toys and logbooks in the container but the onus doesn't fall on the finder to do that either..We are doing it help with the "game".....So who has ultimate responsibility for the Cache?? I would guess the owner.... If owners used good quality waterproof containers that would help with most of this....The long term durability of snap and locks is questionable at best...

I understand the OPs Concern on Cache maintenance.....I don't understand the Angst against his comments when it is well known it is up to the owner to check his Cache's periodically.....

I do some Caching off road with my KTM and my Mountain bike.... Not sure where you live but here in Michigan you can get the mapping and routes for the ORV trails to upload onto your Garmin...Makes things a little easier when you try to map recon a day of riding and Caching... This Caching rocks and it helps motivate me to put miles on my Bikes...both of them... As far as the plug in...Just log onto the Garmin site and download the Garmin Plug in for your unit...You can also get to the exact page by trying to upload Caches through geocaching.com If you have already uploaded the Garmin Plug in go into "Compatibility view" on your computer and load geocaching.com into the box...(don't do like I did and load the forum page for geocaching(Groundspeak.com), it doesn't work..LOL)

I see quite a few Gang up on the Caches and log in as a group...Geocachers are logging finds that they never see because they are knocking them out in a "Group"..Some of those astronomical numbers happen when they drop a bunch of bike riders at different points on a power trail or whatever and they all log the finds at the end of the day wether they actually signed the log or saw the caches themselves or not....To me that is not the way that I would want to do things but everyone plays the game differently.....

Actually not all 50s have a camera...IE 450ts..(The 550Ts are the same as a 450ts but have a camera).. You can get a Garmin 450 or 450t for just over 200 bucks...I have been using one for a few years with no issues... I also agree the Cameras are not at all needed for my applications for the GPS If I was going to buy new I would look at the 600 or 600t...That unit is a little over 400 bucks but has an updated screen and some nice features...

Got it..I did a search(Should have done that in the first place) saved Geocaching.com to my compatibility view and it worked....This Forum is a big help..Don't know what I would do without it...

Went to download Caches today and when I went to transfer them to my 450t I got a "Garmin plug in not detected" message....Went to Garmin and it recognized Ver 4.0 and I updated it...Restarted the computer and get same message when trying to download individual Caches. Went back to the Garmin website and It stated that I had the latest version and recognized that my 450t was hooked up...Computer is recognizing my Garmin unit f drive..Any suggestions??

I have had great luck so far with Garmin... Going back to 2004.. The Garmin Etrex legend that I had turned my Military PLGGR system into a paperweight..... I am currently running a 450t and have been reasonably happy with it...Now I am just in a holding pattern waiting for the Garmin Montana 600t to drop in price... By then all of the bugs should be worked out of it... I have a Magellan and a Lowrance Safari also..... If you think the Garmins are a PIA try using the Lowrance....I bought the Lowrance mainly for a back up for my boat electronics...It's nice transferring data back and forth with an SD card but everything from the Lowrance screen to the software sucks...

Sorry. I don't buy the "it's a business and if you don't like they way they run it, just suck it up or go elsewhere". If you don't have controlling stake or stock in the business what else can you do..??? You can make suggestions but ultimately it is the owners game and business to do what they feel is best for growth...The only thing consumers can control is who gets their hard earned dollars.....

I enjoy their product and the price of Premium membership is ultra-reasonable...So I could care less what they gross or net....If it really bothers anyone that much try to start up a product like Groundspeak on your own...I guarantee you will see the price of admission is a value...

A Geocacher could use a lensatic compass and pace count from a known location and find Geocaches but why not use the best tools available that you can afford....
