  1. Im heading off on holiday to the Channel Islands in a few weeks and Ill be having an overnight stop in Poole on the way out and the way back. The result is Ill have an evening free on the way out, and a morning free on the way back to get some caches in. Ive been looking on the map and the Holton Lee series dont seem to be too far away, but any suggestions for some not to be missed caches/trails nearby? Ill have the bike with me which I can take or leave at the hotel when I arrive, but on the way back I wont be able to so a suitable cycle route would be great.
  2. For a while now Ive found when Ive been out that caches I was sure I had downloaded weren't appearing on the GPS. Initially I thought it was just me and that I had viewed some caches and just never downloaded them as it is only a few occasions its happened. However, yesterday confirmed my suspicions that I had downloaded some caches but they were showing. I downloaded maybe 10-15 caches on Friday and headed out but found that a series of 4 weren't showing on the GPS (again initially put this down to me as opposed to the GPS), so put it to the back of my mind and downloaded some other caches yesterday (and again the 4 I thought I had previously, when I downloaded them it did pop up asking to replace them as they had already been downloaded), so beginning to question my sanity I went out last night but nope, no caches, checked again this morning and yes according to the site I have already downloaded them yet when I go into my list of downloaded caches there are not listed. Very odd as a load of other caches Ive downloaded its done fine. anyone got any ideas?
  3. Must be fate I was planning my first caches along a canal path and was about to ask the question regarding BW permissions, happy days.
  4. Just a quick note to say thanks for the advice. Managed to get a dozen or so caches done over the weekend (no-where near as many as I would have liked due to a GPS map issue & phone carrier issue), however had a great time on the island and hope to get more done when Im back for 10days at the start of October.
  5. Thanks very much for the responses guys its appreciated, the fact you say there are very few naff caches on the island makes things a whole lot easier.
  6. Simply Paul - thanks for the response, Ill have a hire car for the time that Im there.
  7. Any geo cachers here from the Channel Islands? I'm heading to Jersey for a long weekend shortly and wanted to do a few caches whilst there. However, as Im only there for a short time Im looking for advice on any recommended or 'must do caches' if anyone has any suggestions? Thanks
  8. Being new to caching (1 short of my 100th find), Ive been keen to place a cache since I first started, infact the very day I started I thought of the perfect place to put a small series, and was surprised there weren't any there already yet there was a poor to average cache near by, as it really is a lovely walk. However Ive held off placing any until Im 100% satisfied with their location. Ive already been given permission to place them and spent a good hour or so scouting possible locations last night. However I'm still not 100% happy with 2 of the 3 locations and think it will be some time yet before Im happy enough to have them published. I'd much rather do it this way and have 3 quality caches than 3 poor ones. I think making it a stipulation that you must place a cache after x number of finds would increase the already large number of poor caches & non-maintained caches that are already around and may put some pressure on people to place caches quickly without fully thinking out their locations first.
  9. Still being rather new Ive been logging DNF's after my second visit. If I cant find a cache I will go back in a couple of days and re-try, if at that point Ive not found it I've then been logging a DNF, although when I do find the cache I do mention how many times its been looked for in the log. However reading this thread I'll start logging them on each attempted.
  10. Ah thanks for the help, I was starting to wonder. Cheers.
  11. Just a quick question, when you post a requires maintenance log, do you then have to log the cache again with a found it log?? Ive logged a few maintenance logs but Ive noticed a lot of people log the maintenance log and then they log a found it log?
  12. Thanks for the replies and the advice. I bought a 62S yesterday. I did look at the Oregon 450 when I was in, but the touch screen put me off, in general Im not a big touch screen fan. Had a play around with the 62s lastnight and am delighted with it.
  13. Just looking for a few opinions really. Im still relatively new to geocaching, however Im well and truly hooked. A couple of months back when I started I purchased a Garmin Etrex Venture HC. Now I get on pretty well with this my only complaints being it can be a bit indecisive with the compass at times and there have been couple of occasions where it just wouldnt zero in (maybe gps just has off days like the rest of us). Anyway, it does pretty much everything I want with the exception of paperless caching, now Im getting more into caching paperless certainly looks like a route I'd like to go as: a) it saves carrying around bits of paper with clues etc. on, which have the downside of having to have them with you, need to plan ahead and also last week whilst out I got soaked and the notes disintegrated. Im not the most organised at times and twice Ive went out without my scribbled out bits of paper where the hints would have helped. c) I dont have an i-phone etc. just a basic nokia so paperless caching that way is a no go. So Im looking for suggestions. My main idea was to upgrade to a Garmin 62s which seems to tick the box's Im looking for (plus its available locally, I dont really want to order another model online then discover I dislike it, Id like to get a look at it first), but are there any recommended alternatives that would be usable along with my current Garmin that would be water proof etc. Thanks for any replies in advance.
  14. A friend on Facebook kept posting things like 'off out caching', 'found 15 caches today', I decided to google it to find out was it was and had a very brief read still not 100% understanding what it was, I decided it seemed like a bit of a sad past time and left it at that. Then a few months later I had another google search and got a slightly better idea but still binned the notion off. Then a few weeks ago I had a week of work, after the first few days of doing the usual bits of DIY & gardening I decided since the weather was good it would be a shame not to take my youngest dog out for a nice long walk, however having 2 golden retrievers I've done most of the local country park walks many times so decided to look into geocaching a bit further to see if it could perhaps take away a bit of the boredom of walking around the same areas. I had a read proper read through to fully understand what it was all about and then looked at some GPS reviews. Being of a slightly impulsive nature I then started checking local shops online to see who had any of the GPS's I had been looking at in stock....no-one did locally which was a bummer, and I didn't have the patience to order one and wait for it to come (I had decided that I wanted to try it there and then and not having an i-phone etc. couldn't download an app). So I then looked further afield and eventually found a shop in Edinburgh who had 1 Garmin GPS in stock so reserved it on line jumped in the car and 2 hours later I was home with my new GPS. I then downloaded the co-ordinates to the first cache I was going to look for, threw the dog in the car and headed off........unfortunately I hadn't read the instructions for the GPS first and as such ended up in the right area but couldn't find the cache and every time I checked the GPS it was telling me a different direction and differing distances. Slightly in the huff I went home unhappy that my first time out I had failed. However I then read the manual, and became slightly more educated on the operating procedure for the GPS and went out looking for another local cache, hey presto I found it (I would never have believed finding a glorified lunch box under a rock would have been as exciting). So for the next few days I went out finding more and more local caches, and recently some further afield, think its safe to say Im well and truly hooked (although the dog has been a bit tired of late with all the walking).
