  1. I have some of the other NG TOPO! products, and they seem to handle waypoints just fine. I just download them from my GPS or enter them manually. I don't know that GPSBabel can write the .tpg files that TOPO! uses, so you might have to load the waypoints into your GPS and import them into the program from there. I think their tech support runs out of a closet in Calcutta or something. About a year ago, tech support said they were not going to add support for my Garmin, and the the next month they did. Obviously they are out of the loop.
  2. Yes, Garmin does make pretty good fishfinder/gps units, but so does Eagle/Lowrance. I have used both, but Garmin is coming out with some pretty good stuff lately. I currently use a low end Garmin fishfinder, and plug it into my GPSmap 76 with the NMEA interface. Works great! If I had the bones though, I would definitely get one of these.
  3. Piece of cake. I have a hardwired plug for my GPSmap 76 in my boat. Red to fused Hot, Black to Ground, third wire to NMEA compatible depth sounder; bingo! With this setup you can record depth in your GPS track log, then take it home and plot the depth on charts. I use the Garmin cord that comes with bare leads, and the plug just rest on the RAM mount until I plug the GPS in.
  4. Birdman (The real one) said: quote:I agree more with "Alpha" above, the unit is designed more to be a FRS/GMRS radio than a GPS unit. Think about it, it is a radio with GPS stuff added to it, NOT the other way around. quote: This is NOT what Alphawolf has been saying. If you read his series of posts, he maintains that the Rinos are competent GPS units with inferior FRS/GMRS radios tacked on. I just received a Rino 120 yesterday, and at first glance I have to agree. I haven't updated the Rino firmware or done any serious testing yet, but I will soon. I have a pair of ICOM 4008A FRS that I paid $70 each for, and a pair of Cobra FRS that cost $20 each new. Should be an interesting comparison.
  5. I just ordered a Rino 120 at tvnav.com for $205 = $10 S&H. Due for delivery today!
  6. Many Geocachers cary a compass, because when you slow down to hunt the cache, the arrow on the GPSR gets flaky. Just take the bearing to the waypoint off of the GPS, plug it into the compass, and follow the direction to travel off of the compass. The reason the GPs gets flaky is that when the distance to the waypoint is less than the Estimated Position Error, the position fix will dance around within the range circle. Hope this helps you...
  7. To see the $199 price, you have to add the item to the shopping cart. Garmin doesn't let vendors advertise prices below $249 for the Rino 120, and that is the work-around most vendors use. I notice that eCost does not have any in stock however...
  8. It would be too easy to block the reception of the GPS antenna so they think you haven't done any driving!
  9. Sounds like Garmin is coming out with a Palm OS PDA! Where do I get in line?
  10. I just got a PowerEx MH-C401FS charger which does a great job charging one to four NiMH cells at a time. I have some ICOM FRS radios that also use AA's in threes.
  11. The Garmins have that setting "lock to roads" which I always leave turned off. The only problem with having the V AND the Magellan is that you would have to juggle the file formats. I think that might get to be a pain...
  12. I have a Garmin Fishfinder/depth sounder on my boat which plugs into my GPSmap 76 with the power/data cable. When you set the com on the 76map to NMEA 183 it receives and records depth, which can then be downloaded to a computer with the tracklog. Great for making maps with soundings on them. The sounder does not need to be a Garmin for this to work, since NMEA is a Marine industry standard.
  13. Yea, that we walk through the Valley of Dr. Ufo Koska, we shall fear no evil, because the agents of THE SOUTH shall shurly lay waste to the Minnions of the North. Now calling all supporters of Truth, Justice, and The American Way (Team South) to join me in conspiracy, skullduggery, and some serious trash talking, so that we may drive the Forces Of Evil back to Redmond where they came from! Conspirators Wanted: apply within. And to those Forces of Evil (Team North), let me just say this: I FART in your General Direction!
  14. I moved The Photographer's Cache V to downtown Topeka almost three weeks ago, and I am starting to wonder if there are any Geocachers IN TOPEKA, or if I made a critical error in the coordinates. Any comments appreciated!
  15. Wow, that route looks like a blast! I would like to do that next summer also. The link to the maps is here. Hey, MattandLaura, could I get a copy of that Mapsource file when you get it?
  16. There is another underwater catch here in Lake Washington that is attached to an anchor line with float. No snorkling required, but a boat is helpful.
  17. J-PASS gives you sky maps and lets you sign up for e-mail notification of viewing oportunities with all kinds of great info. We have a great pass coming up in Seattle in 20 minutes - 60 degrees over the horizon, Sunlit all 10:45 for the pass - hope it's dark enough! Another bug...

On my Alki Tour #2 Cache page, http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=17211&log=y&decrypt= The photo on the page now has a broken link. Now that I think about it, the image was probably located off site on my own web space, so I will just upload it to the page and edit the page to reflect that. Also, I now have a couple of html tags showing (probably my sloppy coding) . I will wait a day or two before fixing it in case anyone wants to look at it...

  21. Count me in also. I know a great spot for a meet. http://www.ci.renton.wa.us/commserv/parks/coulon.htm The North Picnic Shelter in the top photo has a rated capacity of 200. It would be a great spot for a meet or two, after which indoors might be better...It is halfway between Kirkland and Tacoma, is accessible by car, boat, airplane, and train, has a geocache (GC8100) N47 30.404 W122 12.119 (coordinates about 200 yards S of this shelter), and is quite scenic. I think the shelter reserves for $15 or something... I will call tomorrow and see (if anyone seems interested). Erik (Uplink)
  22. Look at it this way: Barometric Pressure as reported by weather outlets is always sealevel pressure. If you tell your altimeter the BP, it will compare that with it's measured ambient pressure, and the difference will give you the altitude. .01 inches of mercury is about ten feet, so the theoretical acuracy of an altimeter is about 10 feet, but will be off by an additional 10 feet for every .01 inHg the BP is off.
  23. I already tried to do the Groundspeak crew a favor... http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=32889 You owed me one! (couldn't resist the temptation to raz ya a bit).
  24. The planets have resumed their orbits, and I feel better already. Thank you J. and crew.
  25. The key is to resize your image for screen display. If you are going to print a photo, by all means scan at 300 dpi. However, on the web it will be displayed at 72 dpi not matter what you do, so if you post a photo thats 2000 pixels wide, it will be several screens wide. You should resize to 640x480 pixels or smaller (personally, I make all of my photos 500 pixels wide). For displaying in cache logs, geocaching.com resizes all photos to 300 pixels wide. If you post a photo smaller than that, it will be UPSAMPLED
