  1. Let's get the word out... Camp sites are booking up fast for the NYGO 2007 picnic at Fish Creek Pond State park on August 11 2007. This park is the most sought after location in the entire Adirondack region so it fills up fast. The park requires a 3 night minimum stay. I reserved the week leading up to the picnic on site 168. Arrivals on Friday, August 10 2007, should be booked on Nov 10, 2006. http://fishcreekpond.com/ is an excellent private resource for information on the park. Please visit the NYGO forums for updates. ny-geocaching.org

  5. Opalec New Beam link If this link does not work, try a google for bright guy and then search for opalec new beam. The conversion kit works well with NiMh's batts. Geonavigating since 1991
  6. I would love to vote for... Oh that's right we don't have a New Yorker for NY. Some day Geonavigating since 1991
  7. A few years back I stepped into LED lighting and will never look back. After field testing (night cache testing) dozens and dozens of LED lights, a few always are at my top of the pick list. By far, the most used and most technically advanced in it's class is the Arc AAA. I keep it hung from a neck lanyard, it's always ready. This digitally regulated light is used as a benchmark against which all are compared. It has yet to be beat. I love my Surefire L4 but the Arc LS premium is still my favorite. I use the 2 AA battery tube with NiMh's. My third favorite light is the NewBeam conversion for the Mag. It's very efficient and long lasting. I do own Most every light listed in all the posts in this thread and the above are my top picks. All the above lights are digitally regulated to squeeze every last drop of electron out of a battery without dimming all while providing a bright pure snow white light. A dim yellow mag can never compare. I find it best to bring a light from two different classes. First, a dim wide flood that won't cook your low light vision. Second, a bright tight flood/loose spot to reach out used only when needed. We need to see 180 degrees, from side to side. Tight spots do not fit the bill. The bright spot tightens your retina thus shutting off all peripheral vision. The ionova X-5, streamlight 4-AA, and streamlight 3-AA Luxeon are fine mid level lights but they can never compare to the top three. The twin task line is fine, It's just that LED technology has surpassed incandescent sources since the introduction of the luxeon star emitters. There is no longer an excuse for burned out light bulbs or dim yellow hot spots. I used to be one that was impressed with the old mag...that was until I saw the light! Geonavigating since 1991
  8. Is there a way to select USA only caches in the pocket Query? I live near the Canadian border and would like to generate a list of nearest caches from my zip. I don't want to limit the search to one state as I live near two. If Groundspeak would add USA to the countries list it should solve the problem. Any other ideas? Geonavigating since 1991
  9. : Judgment day A curious fellow died one day and found himself waiting in the long line of judgment. As he stood there he noticed that some souls were allowed to march right through the pearly gates into Heaven. Others though, were led over to Satan who threw them into the burning pit. But every so often, instead of hurling a poor soul into the fire, Satan would toss a soul off to one side into a small pile. After watching Satan do this several times, the fellow's curiosity got the best of him. So he strolled over and asked Satan what he was doing. "Excuse me, Prince of Darkness," he said. "I'm waiting in line for judgment, but I couldn't help wondering, why are you tossing those people aside instead of flinging them into the Fires of Hell with the others?" "Ah, those . . ." Satan said with a groan. "They're Geocachers from upstate New York. They're still way to cold and wet to burn." Geonavigating since 1991
  10. You don’t have to worry about NY cachers messing with the bugs too much; we have the weather doing a better job at it. Let’s see; first we had spring floods, caches still frozen in blocks of ice, and currently we’re experiencing an ice storm from the Buffalo area North. Let’s hope that the bugs still in Buffalo are of the cold weather type. Geonavigating since 1991
  11. Hey GEO! We understand your frustration. It has happened to us many times. As another geocacher said regarding the cover: First it's four then three then two... We found BOYS and the re-hide was shoulder length. Those darn armpit tannin stains. Thanks GEO. We recently found two caches out in the open. We searched for cover items on the rehide. I've read the logs. You better remove the leaky bubbles. - same as we've found in ours. Took a two dollar item - left leaky 10 cent bubbles. You know, the same cachers rehid THE GREAT ESCAPE before your last visit, no cover needed. ( I'll have to hook up with you there ) Another point to consider - we have come across during the last year cachers that find but do not log in the book or on the cache page. So the list widens. I think that it all boils down to experience. With newbes there is a learning curve. We've all been there. They will grow too. We will hook up with you soon. Geonavigating since 1991

  13. Well it's LATE Friday night the cachers are weary - seven bugs stopped in Erie. Not for long. Come on bugs, it's time to follow - let's drink some wine in Ohio. Geonavigating since 1991
  14. Hello Cannon Ball travel bug owners. A fellow geocacher emailed and directed me to this forum. We were the last to leave Bryncliff and there was a table full of TB's without a ride. The cache bag was packed full with the remaining 17. Ten have been placed so far. All were put in recently placed caches. They were packed full. The weather changed and we've run into a snag for the remaining seven. Western NY had a quick warm up causing a rapid melt of the snow pack causing ice jam flooding in the typical cache areas. Two of the caches we sought were awash and now mobile. On higher ground the older existing caches we visited were still frozen in a block if ice. This past weekend I was over to MrsMom's house for dinner where we discussed the last seven. Obviously we wished that fellow cachers took more bugs because placing seventeen is a bit of a task for two single parents with hectic schedules. We felt bad for the owners of the remaining TB's and have come up with a plan. Please discuss the plan in this forum, find consensus. We plan to leave work a few hours early this Friday to drive to Erie PA and place racers. MrsMom has logged all seven in her possession. Because we are not racers and are separate geocachers, would the rules allow me to find the bugs placed by MrsMom in a PA cache and then move them to an OH cache? Let the discussion wars begin... If this is legal, by Thursday, would someone local or with a bit more time e-mail me with information on LARGE accessible caches along the PA - OH border near I-190? I would like to get all of them in one Ohio cache. As far as logging the racers; we logged as they were placed. We did not want to know who's TB's we had in our possession as we personally know many of the race owners. Without the knowledge of the owners there could not be any bias. It was all in the luck of the draw. Next Cannon Ball Run we are leaving EARLY with only four racers. Geonavigating since 1991
  15. On the first day God created the cow. God said, "You must go to field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer. I will give you a life span of sixty years." The cow said, "That's a kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. Let me have twenty years and I'll give back the other forty." And God agreed. On the second day, God created the dog. God said, "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. I will give you a life span of twenty years. "The dog said, "That's too long to be barking. Give me ten years and I'll give back the other ten." So God agreed (sigh). On the third day God created the monkey. God said, "Entertain people, do monkey tricks, make them laugh. I'll give you a twenty year life span." Monkey said, "How boring, monkey tricks for twenty years? I don't think so.Dog gave you back ten, so that's what I'll do too, okay?" And God agreed again. On the fourth day God created man. God said, "Eat, sleep, play, have sex, enjoy. Do nothing, just enjoy, enjoy. I'll give you twenty years." Man said, "What? Only twenty years? No way man. Tell you what, I'll take my twenty, and the forty cow gave back, and the ten dog gave back and the ten monkey gave back. That makes eighty, okay?" "Okay," said God. "You've got a deal." So that is why for the first twenty years we eat, sleep, play, have sex, enjoy, and do nothing; for the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family; for the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain our grandchildren; and for the last ten years we sit in front of the house and bark at everybody. Life has now been explained. Geonavigating since 1991
  16. To the owner of wired: Thank you for updating the page. We don't need people stopping on the highway. Geonavigating since 1991
  17. To prevent deer- car accident the NY thruway authority maintains a large fence just inside of the treeline. The cache is roadside. BTW stopping is illegal. Caches such as this - DOES give ALL of us a bad name. Hmmmm some believe that we are shovel wielding hole digging environment destroying maniacs. The negative image is derived from a poorly placed cache. Some wonder why sections of land are closed to the sport. Do we police ourselves or do we let them legislate it. I certainly do not want the government lurking in our sport. Geonavigating since 1991
  18. web page Cache name: WIRED New user, no finds, one hide. This cache is dangerous and illegal. The cache requires you to stop on the shoulder of a state thruway. How did this one get by the screeners? Geonavigating since 1991
  19. Does the number of registered members listed on the fourm page reflect just thoes who have registered on the fourms? Is this number the same as all registered geocachers? If not, where would this information be found. Thanks Geonavigating since 1991
  20. I like the designs based on the globe and the compass rose. They show a meaning and are related to the sport. To an outsider they describe something about the sport/game. I showed my eight year old geocaching daughter all of the ideas offered thus far. "GX ... yuck. What's supposed to mean?" The globe, Lat + Long, cardinal points, satelites, hiking, compass, etc. all represent our hobby. Our icon should be representational of it. When cachers and NONCACHERS see the logo it should easily and clearly represent geocaching and what we do. GX doesn't. Take some time to study marketing text. You may want to rethink. The litmus test is if an outsider understands the icon, then we've picked the right one. If it needs explaning TO AN OUTSIDER it's wrong. Please don't slam me for this post. The forums are here for all opinions and facts. Geonavigating since 1991
  21. After finding that a cache coordinates are off by 50 or more feet, I'll email the owner to recheck and offer my coordinates taken by 2 GPSR's. I will also ask what type of GPSR they are using. 100% of the time, the owners were using the e-trex line. The units patch antenna will work well out in the open. In the woods; they're lame. While doing team finds, the cachers holding the e-trex are the ones searching furthest from the actual cache. There are no opinions expressed here. This is just what I have observed. One does get what they pay for. Geonavigating since 1991
  22. Once you start using the 176c, you'll never have any regrets. The unit is awesome both on the trails and cliped onto it's dashboard bracket. You'll never squint at a tiny monochrome screen again. You can select land or water optimized views. Geonavigating since 1991
