  1. I learnt about geocaching through a muggle colleague... who is still a muggle! One of his friends was a geocacher and showed him about the game. As my colleague knew I was a nature- and walk-adict, and that I formely did some scouting as well, he thought that could interest me and told me about geocaching. I immediately started from a Belgian local website (www.geocaching.be) and found a cache not too far away from my house, but I did not directly understood everything about geocaching... Anyway, I went to GZ with my 2 old boys and after 30 minutes we finally found the container and signed the logbook. We were so excited! That was a great experience, but the real addiction started a couple of months later, when we went on holiday with a friend who was a more experienced geocacher. The first cache I hunted for with him was at sunset in the middle of a salt marsh zone, and THAT adventure made me really addict! This was one year ago. Today I am reaching 150 smileys, what is not that much, but for me a decent number seen my very busy agenda (2 small children, a baby, a full time job, and some breeding). oliantoine
  2. Something I did today while hunting Nanos in/on guardrails....if your cell phone has a front facing camera, use that to look under and around the innards of those guardrail ends to see if you can spot the cache as well as any bees, spiders, or any other antisocial critter that might be there. That is a nice tip! For sure I will make use of it one of these days!
  3. Hi geocachers, I use to hunt for caches with my two little boys. We discovered many caches, and some of our finds can really be assigned to them, they sometimes have a better eye than me! Obviously, I logged all those caches under my own name - both in the logbook and on the web site. The eldest now wants to create its own account. The question is : is he allowed to log the caches he found prior to its registration? Obviously he did not sign logbooks, as I did it under my own name. If this is generally accepted - and technically possible, then I plan to at least contact the cache owners to ask for their permission. Thanks for your answers, and happy caching to all of you, oliantoine
  4. Hi! I'm from Belgium (CET time zone) and I obviously plan to go for some cache hunting on February, 29th. Does anyone know how Groundspeak calculates if one can obtain the souvenir or not? Is time zone taken into account? I mean, if I log my find early morning on (my) February 29th, one might still be February 28th in Seattle, where I suppose Groundspeak servers farm is located. Thanks for your anwsers, oliantoine
  5. Why would you respond to a legitimate question in this manner? The OP apparently is relatively new to our hobby and to this forum and asked a simple question. Granted, a Google search would have answered his question, but isn't that what this forum is all about, helping someone with a question? Remember, we all started out with little knowledge of geocaching, and either learned on our own, or read this forum to learn. Remember, you only get one chance at a first impression. +1 I'm french speaking Belgian, pretty new to Geocaching, and also asked myself where does that term come from.
  6. Hi there! I also own a iPhone 4 and encounter 2 main problems I ask myself if a GPSr - the Explorist GC - can solve : * too short battery life - you already gave me the answer, true GPSr are far superior * accuracy : too often my iPhone get lost (100-150 feet) because of the terrain or the tree cover Hence my two questions : 1) Will the Explorist make a true difference in terms of accuracy? 2) Is a Premium account really mandatory (I do not have it and do not plan to have in the near future)? Which functions are blocked unless you are a Premium? Thanks for your answers Oliantoine
