  1. DH has the palm at his work today, and we are going camping/caching tonight. Does cachemate use GASK, or can I just send him the pocket query zip file to load onto cachemate? Those of you who have gone paperless, do you just use your gps and your palm? We have a Legend GPSr. Thanks!
  2. Okay, ya'll are making this cachemate sound really good! I need to update my pda, as I sold my old one on ebay. I couldn't see it anymore! Even at 28, my eyes are getting me!! LOL Yes, we have a popup - and it too can be a challenge parking. But we are planning a longer trip for the spring, and I thought it would be fun to do some caching on the way. Thanks for all the tips! we are about to leave to go camping and caching. We just purchased another pop-up (this is our 4th! LOL). We are so excited! See you all later - have a great holiday weekend.
  3. Do I need to know the zip codes of the cities we are going through to see the caches on the way to a state park? What is your system for getting the most from your weekend of camping and caching? Thanks!
  4. I love to have a book for everything. A good source on any particular subject. Many times more than one book. I'd love to know lots more about geocaching, but have limited time on the computer. Can someone suggest a good geocaching book? There are so many on Amazon - so I wouldn't know how to distinguish the good from the best. Thanks!
  5. Thanks Keystone & Renegade! As for the knife being garbage, it wasn't. It was a nice knife and we would have kept it except we all aready own a slew of them. It just needed to be cleaned up. It was fairly new, it had just been left out a little long and needed a good sharpening and cleaning - something I'm sure most any geocacher would gladly do if they wanted one. I'll definitely edit the log. Thanks so much!
  6. Oh No!! We found a rusted pocket knife the other day on the way to a cache adn thought it would be okay to leave it for someone to clean up and use if they wanted to. I hope I don't get kicked out. It didn't even dawn on me. We live in the country, and our 9 yo carries a small pocket knife because there is always something that needs to be taken care of around here. I'm wondering if I need to plan a trip out there next week and get it out of there. The probably is, it is 45 miles from our house. Gas!!!! What should I do??? I'm freakin' out here!!
  7. We are up to 7 finds and are contemplating our first placement. Where do you all get your supplies? Is there a forum for ideas for placements? Or do you just go by what you have found so far? Thanks!
  8. I'm with you Briansnat! I think cemetaries are incredibly interesting. There is nothing about them that freaks me out and I don't think it is disrespectful. So many people nowadays are so stinkin' scared of death, that many times this is why they avoid them. It doesn't bother me that my children find an area that is quiet in the cemetary to run around and play in. And as long as there are no plots around that area, that's fine. Do you think if these people could look down they would not remember their childhoods? Like I said, I don't walk over plots (unless they are just right on top of each other and there is no other way around), nor do I let my children. They respect the fact that people have buried their loved ones there. But, to go in there and see all the LIFE that is there! The fact that these people once lived incredibly interesting lives, is so incredible to me. And to see how long or how short some of their lives were is intriguing. When I see a stone that shows what wars that person faught in or that it was a mother who loved her children - that makes me ponder on my own life and what people will say about me when I die - what will be on my headstone?! There is a song called She Loved. It's about the wife of the man that started the Salvation Army. It is a beautiful song about how this woman loved everyone that she came across. How this woman clothed men who couldn't afford a coat, and warmed their hearts with her laughter, as she told them of God's love. She loved her husband and children so much so that when she died, they engraved on her headstone - She Loved. Disrespectful? No! Life giving and enriching? yes!!
  9. we bought the legend today and so far I'm very impressed. I did have some trouble getting better than 30 feet today, but it was overcast and rainy, and I'm sure that had everything to do with it. Because earlier in better conditions, I was getting 7 feet.
  10. we bought the cobra gps 1000 yesterday. But we can't get it to work with any of the software to download waypoints. So, we would like something cheaper - we paid $230. I guess ultimately we would like something with WAAS. What would you get if you wanted to spend less than $175?
  11. Oh my goodness!! This person must only geocache full time!!! Wow!!!
  12. After I posted that about the Texas Geocaching Association - I looked and looked through their site and they don't list any caches. Geocaching.com is definitely extensive and I dont' think we could ever do all the caches in our area on there - not to mention the ones that will come up when we go camping! Thanks for the clarification!!
  13. Does anyone get coordinates from other places besides Geocaching.com or is this the only place to "be"? Found out there is a Texas Geocaching Association. Thanks!
  14. Xbox... Yea, I guess. they have gameboys, but they have games like spirit, and lego star wars! LOL Yea, I guess. they have gameboys, but they have games like spirit, and lego star wars! LOL
  15. we found the legend at walmart for 138 or amazon for 132. I think we are returning this cobra and going with the legend.
  16. today we found a cache in a cemetary. We are a Christian family and we feel like we have taught our children well about what comes after death and that our bodies die and disintegrate, etc. My kids were saying the weirdest things like - I hope those bodies don't reach up and grab us, I hope they don't come alive, ooohh, uuuggg. LOL all this weird stuff that I don't know even know where they got!! But I guess they will get used to walking in cemetaries, because we have a lot of caches around here in them!!
  17. We are thinking of returning our Cobra and going with the legend, but we want to make sure that we can use one of the softwares with the geocaching.com site to dowload waypoints and info into it. Amazon has a great price on this one!
  18. When I go to my search and check off all the ones that I want to dowload, it automatically wants to download them in loc. I want to download in gpx, because apparently they have more info. I'm a premium members, but I can't see where I get to choose. Thanks!
  19. So far, we found 3 out of 4 caches! We were so close on the 1 that we didn't find, and I think it was just something we missed, or it had been moved or taken. We'll see. We like what it offered for the money. I was just wondering if anyone else had any experience with it. Thanks!
  20. tricky, tricky!! We found one today that we were about to give up on. We were looking for something completely different! Our 9 yo (who is not very attentive) found it - and it was a big self-esteem booster for him!! Loving the game so far!!
  21. Thanks El Diablo - can you be a little more specific though? Since I'm VERY new to this - just started learning today. I dont' know what the scale is. Would 3 be hard or easy to find. How difficult is the terrain in 1.5? Is that a semi flat surface? Thanks so much!!
  22. We will be getting a gps in the next week and I wanted to know what my home coordinates were. Do I need a gps to find this out? Thanks!
  23. So the size of the micro tells me what size the container is? Like some of them say 1.5/1.5 and some say 3/1.5 - what does this mean?
  24. I'm new to geocaching - i think that means I'm a Neocacher??? Anyway, I was searching for caches in my area and there is this micro thing. I have no idea what it is refering to and would love to know before we get started!! Thanks!!
