Sort of the opposite of a 'discovered it' log. That would be cool. 'specially for those of us who use a TB or coin for tracking personal mileage.
  2. In my area I've noticed a couple places where the geocaching google maps are wrong. Not simply out of date. In one place it shows a golf course where there has never been one, and nearby it shows a high school where there is actually a state substance abuse treatment hospital (a.k.a. Spin Dry)
  3. In cases where it is discovered that a cache and a letterbox are in extreme close proximity, why not try to get together and make it a hybrid?
  4. The public PQ idea is only a win for users if its cheaper than a regular PQ. Something like, you can download 10 pre-generated PQs per day or the 5 regular PQs you get. The limitation is, you're stuck with whatever someone else has already run.
  5. So my numbers are off. It would still reduce the number of machine cycles by 99% if they could cache the GPX file when the first person generates it and then for the other 99 just ship it out. Of course this only works if you have 100 people who are all happy using the same PQ. Maybe what we need are public PQs, in the same manner as public routes. On the subject of routes, I can say that the advent of "Caches Along a Route" has eliminated my desire to download PQs that cover huge areas.
  6. You say that like its a BAD thing. I'm only kidding. You can put the pitchforks and torches away now...
  7. Sounds like a cool app! I wish my pocket PC weren't busted.
  8. If there are 100 people in an area that run 5 maxed out PQs every day that adds up to 250000 database hits. If Groundspeak pre-generated a PQ containing 2500 waypoints every day and just shipped it out to those same 100 people, that would save 247500 database hits. It seems to me that if they planned it out right, they could have a huge net win by making canned PQs available, at least in some populated areas. The problem is, I get the impression that Groundspeak has an aversion to having people maintain offline databases of caches like that. Whether it makes sense to us, or not, policy is policy.
  9. The first 3 caches I ever found were all micros. They all brought me to local parks that I might not otherwise have noticed and 2 of them had local history lessons attached. I like that sort of cache, whatever size it is. Other micros I've done that I like are cleverly camo'd "hidden in plain sight" caches. I think it takes a lot more creativity to hide a micro in plain sight where 1000 people are going to pass by evey month than it does to trek into the wilderness and bury an ammo can under a pile of sticks where no one else will ever go. I won't go out of my way for a lamp post micro. I have found a few, but only when I was already there for something else. (edited for formatting.)
  10. Is anyone else bothered by the fact that the cache size is not displayed in iconic form on the cache page? The cache type, difficulty, & terrain are all icons. Why not size? Location of the size information on the cache page also perplexes me. I would prefer to see it either up near the cache type icon, or along side the terrain/dificulty icons. And last, if the cache size is not specified, please TELL ME that the cache size is not specified. The current practice of not displaying anything if size is unspecified often leaves me wondering if I looked and missed it or if it's really not there.
  11. I bought a $15 USB to Serial convert from gomadic.com and it works just fine on my Windows XP laptop with my Garmin GPS. I also bought the connector to build my own serial cable. I cut the tail off of an old serial mouse and soldered the connector on the end. $3 for the connector from gomadic and $1.50 for the mouse at a surplus shop and I had a cable that would have cost me $40 from Garmin.
  12. Hmm... Yea, I guess it is more of a website issue than a TB issue. Oh, and I have tried clicking the "recalculate distance" thingy. That didn't make any obvious difference.
  13. I have a geocoin that I log in & out of every cache I visit to track my mileage. Recently I was looking back at the history and I noticed one point where I logged it out of a cache in Green Bay, WI and the next cache I logged it into is in Minnesota. I am certain that those caches are nearly 300 miles apart yet the coin history page only shows 24.7 miles moved. What gives? Here's a screenshot of the history log since I couldn't figure out how to link to it:
  14. Is it possible, in GPXSonar, to load a gpx file, set a filter, and then export to a new gpx file only the filtered caches? I know how to do this with GSAK on a PC, but it might be nice to be able to do it in the field on my pocket PC. At one point I thought it was possible but I tried to do it recently and couldn't figure it out again. Can someone set me straight?
  15. I use gpxsonar on an Axim X50. It works beautifully. When you bring up a cache listing from GPXsonar it should launch the web browser and display the cache almost exactly like what you see on the live website. Try copying the gpx file directly to your ppc, without filtering it through Easygps.
  16. Actually, after I wrote that I went home and double checked. Now I'm not sure that you can export from GPXsonar. I may have given false hope. Sorry.
  17. My Geko is about 1/2" longer, a frogs hair thinner, and just about as wide as my cell phone. (not counting the phone's antenna) I like the fact that I can easilly slip it into my pocket and carry it around for opportunistic caching. As someone mentioned, the batteries last for about 8 to 12 hours but thats longer than I last for a day of caching so it's no big deal.
  18. Whoa. You must write pretty darn fast. How do you keep the pencil from bursting into flames? Personally, I hate essay questions. It would take me a few hours to write a few pages, at best. I would never do it in the field.
  19. Oh, good. A geocaching doilie. (edited for speeling)
  20. They added the Gustav variant geocaching logo, too.
  21. I found a neat website that generates customizable "Seal" graphics like this: You can customize the text, colors, border, and the central emblem. They offer a wide variety of emblems including the Gx logo. I also e-mailed to suggest the Gustaf geocaching logo. Once generated, you can download the graphic and use it freely. Their FAQ says this: Here's the site: http://www.says-it.com/ If you look at my profile, you can see what I've done with it. I plan to use the seals to make my own sig tokens. I had to manually edit in the Mustang image. They don't have the capability to upload your own graphics.

Nice looking coin. Too bad the spinny bit didn't work out. I was hoping that would work out and someone would use that technique to produce a working circular slide rule geocoin.
  23. i pondered that very quesiton, myself, not long ago. I looked up the frequencies that GPS and XM radio use and they are vastly different. It is unlikely that an antenna tuned for XM frequencies is going to work well at all at GPS frequencies. That being said, if I had a GPS with an external antenna jack, and an XM radio antenna, and the connectors fit together, you can bet your bippy that I'd plug it in and try it anyway.
  24. here's a virtual TB logged into a virtual cache. TBG9EW
  25. I wonder if it would make sense to have an incremental "My Finds" PQ. In other words, have a second button that generates a PQ containing only my new finds since last time I ran it. My old finds are never going to change. Why keep running the search on the old ones over and over again. I would think that this would save a few database hits. heck, it could even be set up kinda like the weekly new cache notification. Every week it automatically sends me a gpx of my finds for the past week.
