  1. Hi guys, Just getting back into things after a winter hiatus and found this app - very cool! BTW - Geo - thanks for provinding the CAB file option to download. I found this on my "non-partnered" PC, downloaded it to the SD card, and then installed from there. It really helped! Now - my question - This application seems so complete, is this just something I'm missing? Will the application log your field notes to the cache on GC.com when you next sync or is this an option? I don't see how it can right now since I haven't seen anywhere to enter a password, although I did find the username input. Maybe I've just missed it? Other than that, this app rocks. The only thing we've found that I'd change if I could is that when closing a cache detail view in pocket IE, we've had a tendency to close GPXSonar as well. It'd be neat if the window close control could be moved, but I don't have any idea how or if that's possible. GEO - Thanks for a great app! Tim the Technojunkie
  2. Interesting topic! I navigate in a couple of phases.... I use the GPS in "north-up" mode when I'm just heading toward the general area... Once I'm close, I switch to "direction of travel up" mode, so I can visualize my orientation to the cache/address/etc. Tim KB5OGH ================ I just need a fix!

  4. I would like to complain that I have no complaints about the website! There should be something that honks me off, but I just can't think of it! Dang! Tim KB5OGH ================ I just need a fix!

  6. Hi all! I have a gently used Garmin Etrex (yellow) plus a home-made data cable (p-franc connector and serial cable) looking for a new home. It's in good shape - you can tell it's used, but no significant scratches, gouges, etc. The data cable works great (if I do say so myself...). $60 - Anyone interested? Email me - tsaman@nospam.att.net - (be sure to remove the nospam part.....) Thanks, Tim Technojunkie Tim KB5OGH ================ I just need a fix!
  7. I use "ol' yeller" (Garmin Etrex Yellow)... Got it for work awhile back and just haven't seen a need to upgrade. It does what I want and helps me find caches just fine, thank you. Yeah, I'd love to have basemaps, and an integrated magnetic compass, and other cool bells and whistles, but you know - for geocaching this is sufficient. I'm always torn when purchasing equipment for field use between buying the best and then worrying that I'll screw it up or buying too little and then wishing I hadn't. When I bought this, it wasn't the least expensive model out - at the time the store had several other models that were a little less expensive (older, closeouts). I chose it by choosing a midrange model - not the cheapest, not the most expensive, but somewhere in between. I've been very happy with it all in all. My two cents worth! Tim KB5OGH
  8. So, reading this thread got me to wondering about the legalities and viability of urban legends regarding damaging or destroying coins (once I had heard that it was legal to modify/damage/destroy pennies, but to damage/destroy/modify any other coin was illegal). I did a little searching and found the following: quote:Section 331 of Title 18 of the United States code provides criminal penalties for anyone who “fraudulently alters, defaces, mutilates impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens any of the coins coined at the Mints of the United States.” This statute means that you may be violating the law if you change the appearance of the coin and fraudulently represent it to be other than the altered coin that it is. As a matter of policy, the U.S. Mint does not promote coloring, plating or altering U.S. coinage: however, there are no sanctions against such activity absent fraudulent intent. So, it seems that if you don't try to present it as legal tender once modified it doesn't really matter! (Found this quote in relation to coin jewelry....) That's my 2 cents worth! Tim
  9. This has been sold! Thanks for looking. Tim
  10. So, being optimistic I purchased this a little while back and discovered in short order that my laptop is WAY too slow to run it..... Yeah it meets minimum specs, but.... Anyway, I have for sale a copy of Delorme's Topo USA 4.0. You can find details on their website here. This sells new for $99, I figure I'd take about $75. I prefer PayPal for payment. Questions - email me! Thanks, Tim
  11. Hey guys, Whilst searching for a decent GPX viewing application for my Ipaq I saw your thread and thought I'd chip in... You know, a review I read over on pocketpcpassion.com (I think) didn't really mention much in the way of significant updates with the exception of wireless networking and a few cosmetic things. My old 3650 is running PPC2002 and I'm content with it for now. When it can't do something I really want to do I may consider upgrading... Have fun! Tim the Technojunkie KB5OGH

  14. So - Bret I take it you didn't get a chance to catch one at the time of the other thread? (Of course, in November it was probably just too doggone cold!) There's usually 3-7 per week of varying magnitudes near my house... And then there's all the other sorts of stuff that's floating around up there - rocket boosters and all sorts of junk - that you can sometimes see... Fun stuff! Thanks for the linkage! Tim KB5OGH ================ I just need a fix!
  15. I love this idea! I've been a bit of an astro-nerd for a few years now, and you're right, the iridium flares are quite spectacular... That being said, off we go to the nether reaches of possible implementation...... The path for a particular iridium flare can be several miles wide depending on the minimum acceptable mangnitude limit you set in order to qualify for a "hit" or find. For the greatest magnitude - you're right - you'd need to be in (or very near) the center of the track, otherwise you may still see the flare, but not at the greatest magnitude possible! However, I wonder how we could standardize/confirm the observations to allow logging of a hit/find..... Subjective observaton can vary significantly, so perhaps a magnitude limit wouldn't be the best criteria.... Maybe a link with Heavens Above to confirm the observational data... If you enter these coordinates and this time it could show a find (or not) as appropriate? Based on that, HA provides an estimated magnitude based on the location you enter.... Maybe that's how we qualify the finds.... Must be mag -4 or better to qualify based on the location and time you enter. That would give you a generalized location down to a couple of square miles I would guess and would be possible to implement..... Interesting idea! Good luck! 16. My wife and I have discussed the fact that once I've been somewhere before, the path from A to B is pretty much solid! Now, I may not know where I'm going enroute, but I can always find my way back once I've been there, and then that path/location is pretty much part of my "basemap", so to speak. It's kind of like when playing Command and Conquer or many of the other real-time strategy games - once the map is unhidden, it says unhidden! While driving, I often reply - "Oh yeah, I know where we are - I was lost here once..." - meaning of course the first time... Location specific memory - it's a grand thing... 17. Now where did I put.... So, a few months ago I decided to try to catch a cache over lunch. It seemed to be a great day for a walk. I found the cache quickly and managed to get it re-hidden and back to my car in good time! Now just to unlock the door.... Yep - there they were - still in the ignition. About 20 minutes of searching turned up a bunch of sticks, an old screwdriver, and that was about it. (I figured I'd find some wire or a coathanger somewhere....) After having no luck with the park guys via cell("So, you're WHERE?"), I finally worked the window down enough that I could flip the door lock with a long crooked stick. Just call me Macguyver! (It's much more funny in retrospect than it was at the time....) Tim KB5OGH ================ I just need a fix!
  18. How did the bears get ahold of the hiker's GPS in the first place? (Yeah, an expository question, granted... But it maybe helps the rather obtuse humor of the cartoon?) Ha. Tim Tim KB5OGH ================ I just need a fix!
  19. Well, it was a dancing bananna, but what the heck was it dancing with and what the heck was it saying? It seemed rather sad, actually.... Tim KB5OGH ================ I just need a fix!

  24. that if it's a park sign you should have the "OK" of the park management before affixing anything to their sign.... A nicely printed label not withstanding, it's not our sign, so I would think that permission to attach something to it would be appropriate. Makes a good chance to tell them about the benefits of geocaching for their park! (Cache in, trash out - you know...) If it's a public safety kind of sign/lamp post (traffic light, light post, stop sign, etc.) I don't know that I wouldn't suggest looking for another place to point people to... My two cents worth... Tim KB5OGH ================ I just need a fix!
