  1. Thanks for all the input. I suspected it was purely a matter of personal preference, but I was curious as to which way most people align themselves on the issue. The fact that I had second thoughts about it tells me that, perhaps on a subconscious level, I tend to side with those of you who do not log discoveries. The only times I have logged a discover is when a coin is placed in one of my own caches (I would feel pretty cheesy taking it from my own cache) or when I visit a travel bug hotel but don't want to be greedy by taking them all. The icons are cool, but I like the idea of having them reflect something a little more meaningful. As for the event, we had a great time. Not having much of a collection yet, we did not participate in any trading. I bought a couple of coins, and some of the vendors were kind enough to give us a couple as gifts. Sadly, we did not have the opportunity for a compass rose. I was afraid my daughter would get bored, but for most of the time she had fun. What I enjoyed most was meeting many of you face to face. At this point I am not sure I want to jump in to collecting geocoins on any grand scale, but I am toying with the idea of having some of my own minted. I don't have any good ideas yet for a personal coin, but I do have some thoughts about coins based on our local region that might appeal to a general audience.
  2. My daughter and I just attended our first event, which was Geocoin Fest. There were quite a few geocoin TBs there. My question is whether to discover a whole slew of coins or not. Up until now, every icon on my trackables page reflects a coin I have actually encountered in a cache (some I discovered but left for the next person, most I have moved along). I realize that an event counts as a cache in a sense, but there is still a difference. I'm curious to know what most of you think. Does everyone do this? Is it frowned upon for any reason? I have a bunch of tracking numbers, but have not logged any yet. I checked a few of the numbers, and most had only been discovered by one or two people so far which made me question the act. Thanks for your thoughts.
  3. The guy I talked with seemed to be aware that other people were having the same problem. Send an e-mail to postmaster@charter.net and request that they stop blocking e-mail from GC.com. I have sent one, and in another thread I requested the GC folks to contact them as well.
  4. I have had the problem that a number of people have mentioned in other threads about not receiving e-mails generated from geocaching.com. The issue is with Charter high speed internet service. I had them reprovision my cable modem, which seemed to fix the issue (a few days time will tell for sure, but I did receive both test pocket queries). The technical support person did request that someone from geocaching.com contact Charter at postmaster@charter.net to see about having the geocaching.com server removed from their spam filtering. Can we get some follow-up on this?
  5. Exact same scenario for me....Charter high speed internet and Outlook. The problem is definitely with Charter. After reading through the above posts, I called Charter support and got the problem fixed by having my cable modem reprovisioned. He was not sure why that would be a problem, but it did resolve the issue. He also asked that the Geocaching.com technical team contact Charter to have the geocaching site taken off of their spam filtering list. I will post a request for this in a new thread. If you have this problem receiving pocket queries with Charter, call their support line and ask to have your account reprovisioned. Thanks to all the help from everyone via the previous posts!
  6. Since the first coin focused on the Eastern part of the state, I like the idea of highlighting the coast. Maybe a theme of "California Dreamin'", with one side depicting a beach and surfing, while the other side has something centered on Hollywood. In one sense, many people dream of coming to California (for the sun/beaches), and Hollywood is kind of a place that makes dreams come true through film. I know it is pretty cliche though.
  7. Whew. I thought this might conflict with the Amgen Tour of California (cycling event), but that starts on the 18th. Hopefully I can drive down for both events and meet everyone, then scramble back home to catch the tour which passes through my home town a few days later. I'll have to talk the family out of a ski trip that weekend...
  8. Wow!! These turned out exceptionally well, and did they ever arrive FAST! I ordered late and didn't think I would get the LE, so it was a surprise to see one on my invoice. Thanks for that!! It is so nice when people take the time to do things right. So many folks had a chance to give input on this coin that it truly is representative of our state in the sense of representing the CA caching community. Kudos to The Dillon Gang. Looking forward to the 2007 coin!
  9. Of 16 geocoins I have in circulation as travel bugs, 8 have not been placed back in a cache during the past two months. Of those 8, two "disappeared" from the cache they were last placed in and have most likely been stolen, and one "disappeared" from an event. All of my coins were drilled and had laminated mission tags attached, so this may not be as strong as a deterrant to theft as I had hoped. One of the allegedly stolen coins passed hands three times, the other only once. On a positive note, most cachers who have logged the coins have been very kind, posting comments about how much they enjoyed the coin and saying things like "thanks for sharing". Until I see how things play out over the next few months, I am not placing any new coins in circulation as travel bugs.
  10. I recently ran into one of my own Geocoin TBs someone had placed in a new cache. I went ahead and logged a "Discovered It", but noticed that the coin icon is not listed under my trackables in the Moved/Discovered column. Is that a bug in the system, or can you not "discover" your own TBs? Just curious.
  11. Finally got out and did a little bench marking. FV0322 1938 N N FV0313 1940 N N FV0326 1957 N N FV0142 1957 N N FV0146 1939 N N FV0147 1942 N N FV0144 1927 N N
  12. Okay, I'm now an offical member of the "33" club! Have not had a chance to play with it yet, but hopefully it is not too steep of a learning curve.
  13. Boy, by the time I had a chance to check my e-mail and looked these up, they were gone! It seems the whole "benchmark club" thing is a sham. As I recall, club members were to have first dibs on ordering. Yet, it looks like these were made available to the general public with the chance to join the club upon purchase. I had expected some sort of advance, private sale for a week (or at least a few days) to give club members first shot. Never received any e-mail about advance ordering. I am very disappointed in how this was handled. The coin looks great, but the "club" has proven to be empty of any real value. Not a lot of point in collecting the series when you have already missed the first one. Count me out, thanks.
  14. When will a decision be made about the icon?
  15. Looking into a metal detector. Costco has a few models. Any input on the Bounty Hunter or Famous Trails brands? What model do you use or would you recommend for a beginner (nothing fancy required)?
  16. Just the other day I was thinking how nice it would be when, down the road, I can retire and travel all around the country sightseeing and geocaching. It would be neat to find many different geocoins in the various locations and log them. Then, after reading the recent threads on coin ownership and seeing how much one Moun10Bike coin fetches on e**y, it dawned on me that I have it all backwards! What I need to do is retire NOW and travel all around the country snatching up "abandoned" geocoins and selling them to the highest bidder. The income from the sales will fund my retirement, and I'll essentially be paid to do what I enjoy most!!
  17. Scratch everything and just put a big mugshot of Ahnold on both sides. Also, the correct spelling is "Cauliforkneeuh". OK, seriously... I would have to agree with much of what has been suggested. On the front, lose everything except the Whitney image. Put "FROM THE HIGHEST PEAK" at the top, and "CALIFORNIA" at the bottom. On the back less mules and enlarge the wagons. Just keep the background and the wagon, and maybe some simple text like on the front stating "Death Valley" and the elevation. Put "TO THE LOWEST VALLEY" at the bottom, and "2006 GEOCOIN" at the top. I don't think any coordinates are necessary. Keep the tracking numbers on the front to fill in where the Whitney landscape stops. Replace the bear paw prints with the Geocache symbol, and use them on the front as well. I like the colors blue and gold. I'm also not sure why "peaks" and "valleys" are plural. I think the singular case is simpler and makes a stronger statement. Motogrrl has some really good advice. Save everything else for themes on later editions. Thanks for taking input! I am looking forward to this coin!
  18. 10 in 400 caches (20 pages, 34.5 miles), of which 3 are mine. The other 7 are all USA coins.
  19. I am only activating the coins I actually circulate as travel bugs. Call me silly, but I like the idea that the icons on my trackables page mean something. The only icons under my "Found" column are coins that I have actually encountered in a cache. None of them are my own. Likewise, the only icons in my "Owned" column are from coins that are actually out in the field. I have others that are unactivated which I collect as works of art you might say.
  20. I have a two stage multi-cache, and the second cache disappeared fairly quickly. After further inspection I decided it would be best to change this cache to a traditional type (single). The first cache is in a good location and should not be problematic. I want to revise the cache and reactivate it, but the revision page does not allow a change in cache type. I have sent messages to the admin who approved the cache initially asking how to get around this, but have received no reply. I suppose I can create a new cache, but I want to keep the same name and coordinates. What is the best way to fix this?
  21. I just had to show you this photo. Unfortunately I could not get the benchmark and the wildflowers in the picture together, but here are the wildflowers where I was out today. Just awesome!
  22. Two more today. Rippin' right along! FV0857/1942/N/N FV0859/1942/N/N
  23. have to get an email out to Aaron and find out. I think Brian at GS will do batch up loads of Icons on Fridays or so. That way we will see 4 or 5 icons come up at the same time. Richard anybody have any luck with the custom icon appearing yet? Yes, mine is showing up now. Ditto!
  24. Is there a delay on the custom icon showing up? Mine just lists as a PC icon.
