  1. Wow. Thanks for taking the time to write such an informative reply. I appreciate it and I'll look into the subject a bit more deeply now.
  2. My GPS says it's reading from Satellites 17, 22 and 28. Which satellites do those numbers refer to? They don't seem to relate to the NAVSTAR GPS Operational Satellites. And which one is the Satellite of Love?
  3. Discovery is moving at a helluva lick. It's only taken a few minutes to travel the length of Australia. Those guys must have an amazing view.
  4. I've opted for a slightly different approach . I bought a pda with a built in gpsr and preloaded Destinator software. I've added a few bits of software and I'm in the process of trying them out. Destinator, although quirky and somewhat unstable, does the business most of the time for on-road navigation. For geocaching I've found that Beeline takes care of almost all my needs. However, this is still early days for me and I have a lot more experimenting to do. Nothing I've played with has made me want to leave my legend c behind. I'm quite chuffed that I've been able to type and send this through the wifi connection of my pda
  5. Hawk's Neb (Bute) by Billy Twigger GCM8JW It's called "Hawk's Nib" on the OS map... ...and while you're there you might as well get Rockfall (Bute) by Billy Twigger GCM8K0 which isn't named on the OS map but is an interesting feature nonetheless... ...and since you've come this far you might as well pay a visit to the sublime Terracotta Warriors (Bute) by Billy Twigger GCN1K8 which is nothing to do with the topic but hey, you're on Bute, what else are you going to do?
  6. Thanks all. Where's the HoF and what did we do to deserve a place there? By the way HH, you'll have to visit the Kelvingrove Art Gallery whan it re-opens. They've a haggis on display there, not unlike the one in your avatar.. I'll send a pic when I can get one.
  7. Hmmph! What's the betting he'll be the next guy to pick up my travel bug. If the last one ever gets around to releasing it, that is.
  8. GPS with local maps Walking pole Small rucksack containing: Compass & map of the area we're hunting in. Palm IIIc for paperless caching Head torch Spare batteries for GPS & torch Buff (hat, sweatband, neck protector etc.) Ziplock bags Small penknife with scissors Gloves Waterproof jacket Fleece Sandwiches/pork pies/Snickers... 9. IMO setting caches shouldn't be an obligation. A hastily set cache, or a cache set for its own sake could easily prove to be a hassle both for the setter and the getter. I would rather see caches that are set for the location and/or the puzzle than for the need to simply get one's cache out there. Even a relative novice like myself has come across a few caches that are, quite frankly, simply there because they're there. Personally I will always favour quality over quantity.
  10. Why not try emailing Clyde directly and explain your situation. If you give him your old email address I'm sure he could help you.
  11. I'm afraid I may have needlessly upset Team Maddie UK in a previous thread. As you rightly pointed out this is a difficult medium for communication and true intent is often difficult to judge. I was being playful, and yet I deliberately left out the smilies which would have given you the clues to this. Please accept my apology. By way of an olive branch I hope you accept this link in the spirit it is given, and I hope other geocachers will find it useful and fun. http://www.acronymfinder.com/
  12. I presume that Kulcha is an example of this contracting nature that you speak of. Hmmm. I wonder how a foreigner who was not aware of the meaning of the word would find out. Of course, if it were spelt correctly, he/she could perhaps work it out from its latin roots. ie. cultura Again, let us not lose sight of the purpose of language and the roots from which it came. Martin "Kulcha" is merely a bit of whimsy. If you get the reference then fine, but it's not essential to understand my name as long as you get my meaning. I'm not sure that you did either. Just for the record "Kulcha" is as much a reference to the Irish "Kulchie" as it is to "culture". Never mind, I forgive your presumption since you are unaware of the roots of my language and where I come from.
  13. When in France you should learn to speak French. When in Germany you should learn to speak German. When in Cyberspace you should learn Netspeak. It's just good manners and there's no need to be ignorant of the meaning of acronyms when you can easily Google for them. Internet acronyms have evolved (are evolving) to save time needlessly typing out long sentences. Acronyms are widely accepted in all walks of life and if you don't know the meaning of NASA, LASER or HTTP then you're expected to find out. I suggest that the accusation of laziness should be directed toward those who refuse to do their research rather than those who embrace our expanding, and contracting, language. IMHO

  19. Dear forum posters, As one who suffers from an affliction known as "a sense of humour" I was about to request that hilarious posts are flagged up with a special warning (eg: CAUTION, CONTAINS NUTS) or banned altogether. Unfortunately it's too late since I died laughing at the "rubber gloves" thread. I bet you all feel sorry now.
  20. "Taggart's View" is in the South Side - about 10-20 mins by bus from the city centre. "The Warriors" is a quick virtual just a short walk away.
