  1. How about if I (Oatway) hide a cache on my own, but my wife (Mav) finds it some time later without my help? My reasoning for counting it as a find is that to Mav, it is a new find, regardless of who hid it. Then again, on caches where one of us has found a cache solo, and then the other finds it later we have just posted a note the second time. I'm not one to really care about numbers, but I'm curious what people would think is the proper way to handle this, since I may be hiding one tomorrow without her.
  2. I'd be a little bit wary of placing a cache on my own private property only because I don't want my neighbors getting used to seeing people wandering around my property and thinking nothing of it. I'd rather that they be suspicious of someone on my property and call the authorities if they see a stranger wandering around without me present.
  3. For three feet, I'd just fudge the coords. If you can get someone to within three feet of the cache, they should be able to find it. But it is a funny story! I'm hiding my first cache tomorrow, so I'll have to keep that in mind.
  4. I just bought my first GPSr last weekend, the eTrex Legend and I am quite pleased with it. For me the difference in price between the eTrex and Legend was only CDN $30, so I figured I'd go for the Legend. Anyway, it's nice to have even a basic map included. And yeah, 8MB of memory isn't much, but until Garmin puts out a unit with way more memory than their current top of the line units, I figure the Legend will do me just fine. Don't know if that helps you any.
  5. Just didn't know if other compasses might increase counter-clockwise, or have a different direction as 0 degrees (We use east as 0, and increase counter-clockwise when drawing using AutoCAD at work) Good to know it's a standard thing. Thanks!
  6. I'm fairly new to geocaching (found my first cache yesterday). I'm going for a cache today that has the following in the write-up: "from the waypoint...the cache is 21.6 meters distant, on a bearing of 96 degrees magnetic" My question is this: my compass calls north 0, east 90, south 180, and west 270. Is this a standard thing with all compasses (or navigating in general), meaning that a bearing of 96 degrees would be roughly east (or more accurately, just slightly south of east)? Just wanted to check before I head out, so I'm not walking a circle with a diameter of 43.2m untill I find the cache! Thanks.
  7. So I ended up going with the eTrex Legend. It's got the features I think I'm going to need/want for geocaching and hiking and stuff. I think I'll always prefer to have a paper map, and magnetic compass with me when in unfamiliar wilderness, so the mapping memory wasn't too critical (I had beeen looking at more advanced units). I probably could've gotten away with a more basic unit, but the price was right on this one. Regardless, let the fun begin!! And thanks for your help everyone. (I'll be sure to check out the Edmonton link too.) See you around.. Oatway
  8. Thanks a lot for your help!. (I knew that the Legend only used Serial, I've just been looking at so many numbers and acronyms this week researching the different choices out there that my brain's going numb!!! Can't wait to get the hard part over with and on to the fun part - geocaching!)
  9. I'm new to GPS and Geocaching.. buying my first receiver this weekend. With the eTrex Legend can you connect to your PC with a USB cable and transfer data to your PC to free up space on the receiver? If so, what type of file would it be on my PC, and what software would I need to open/use the information. Or is the USB cable used just to transfer data (Maps) to the receiver? Thanks for the help!
