  1. Has anyone had success in getting email support from Magellan? How long did it take? I've been having poor reception since early June (typically 3-5 satellites versus 8-12 before that). My Meridian also reports receiving the Eastern WAAS signal. I find that highly unlikely given that I live at 49 degrees north on the Pacific coast. I sent them a question two weeks ago about testing my Meridian. One week ago I sent them another email asking when I might hear from them. Today I sent another email with the same question. No response so far, except for the automatic response that they received my first email. Ernie Gorrie The Tropical Dream Maker http://www.dreaminmexico.com
  2. Once in a while I forget to match up the baud on the Meridian and the serial port. I believe the Meridian will take up to 19K, but the software will only permit 4800 (or is it 9600?). Ernie Gorrie The Tropical Dream Maker http://www.dreaminmexico.com
  3. This isn't a geocaching question, but it is a GPS question that I figured someone here might be able to answer. I'm planning to take a Meridian Green to Mexico next month. While there, I want to walk or bicycle the village, download the data to a laptop and be able to produce a map of the village based on the output. I understand that I can do that with OziExplorer, but I don't need full-featured software. I just want to perform this one service for the village with my new (first-time GPS owner as of a week from now) GPS. Is there some kind of free software that would allow me to accomplish this? Or will I have to shell out the C$129 for OziExplorer? Ernie Gorrie The Tropical Dream Maker http://www.dreaminmexico.com
  4. I'm planning the purchase of my first GPS... probably a Meridian. Are rechargable NiMH AA batteries practical for this unit? It seems a bit ironic to me that GPSs would be used a lot by hikers and campers who (hopefully) would have an environmentalist bent, yet they may also be required to put non-reusable batteries into their GPS unit. 5. I'm planning my first GPS purchase after mucking about with my nephew's eTrex yellow for a week. I was vacilating between the Vista and the Meridian Platinum, but now I'm starting to think that the plain Jane Meridian seems to make the most sense for a Canuck. Here's my thoughts. The Vista and Platinum both provide the compass/barometer... but do I really need these? The Vista has a better Canadian basemap, but is it really going to be satisfying? Will I end up paying for the Canadian map CDROMs? The Gold and Platinum have large US basemaps and no Canadian basemaps, but I can buy the plain Jane Meridian with the (soon-to-be-released) Canadian maps CDROM with an SD chip. Then when it comes time to drive from Vancouver to Mexico, I'll be able to buy the Meridian extended map for the US. I think I've got this figured out, but am I missing something?
