  1. Don't know if there will be much interest in this, but I set up a Yahoo group called West Michigan Geocaching. Figure this could be an informal place to share information, ask for hints, and just keep in touch. The benefit of this over using a traditional forum is the ability to send out group messages to the member ship, and get responses from people who don't regularly visit the forums. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/westmichigangeogaching Membership is required to try to limit the amount of spam. Happy Caching! Jim - undiscovered
  2. Read the log by Superfly... GC163N0 Out for a pleasant afternoon of geocaching: $0 FTF on a new cache: $0 Turning around to find 8 police officers with guns pulled: Priceless Sounds like everything ended well though. -Jim
  3. Dang it! I missed it by 4 minutes. Well, count that as a vote for gaggle. -Jim
  4. I get to retire in 30 years and burned up all my sick days... no skipping for me. -Jim
  5. Is this the picture? When you are posting on the forum click on the little picture in the format bar. This will bring up a little window that will allow you to put in the web address of the picture. Use the instructions StarBrand posted on getting the address of the picture if you need to. Feel free to PM me if you need more help. -Jim
  6. You were on Trailgator's list up above, so don't feel bad I'm afraid to put anyone's name down, because then they'd probably disagree with me. I will put: Lep Keystone CyBret Because I've been suspended by them and I also agree with them most of the time You do realize that Keystone and CYBret are the same person, right? Really? I did not know that Well, I guess that adds credibility to my list then eh? LOL!!! Don't believe everything you read in the forums!
  7. I get really pis$ed when I find a flyer for a strip joint in a cache and it DOESN'T include a coupon for a FREE drink!!! Amen! Sample med's are always nice! I think that trade shows give out awesome freebies that are great to trade in caches. Sure it is advertising, but heck, everything you buy has some kind of logo on it, so technically every thing is an advertisement.
  8. I did a search and couldn't find the one I was looking for. Apparently there is one in Northern Ohio that has never been found... I believe it is on an island or something. It's been there about two years. -Jim
  9. Yeah, it looks like he went back out to find one. Welcome aboard, remember to have fun. -Jim
  10. I have an etrex Legend and Garmin GPS12. The GPS12 seems to get a little better reception in wooded areas, but the vista should work fine. I believe that it is more of a case of personal preference and your ability to operate the gps easily. Have fun. -Jim
  11. "obtain" "require" "successful" "stumbling" "advancing" *Spell check complete* Matthew 7:3 KJV Did you read the scripture before you placed it one the board?? I was only trying to clarify that my reference to the posters poor use of spelling and grammer was meant to be constructive given the context of thier post. It was not meant to be a personal attack in any way, and it appears that my comment took on a life of it's own and appeared to make to poster feel the need to defend themselves more than was necessary. Please feel free to spell check this and any of my future posts and I will make a better effort to try to spell even better. Have a nice day. -Jim
  12. Merry Christmas to all. Please remember to hug the ones you love and not do bodily harm to the ones you hate. Merry Christmas to the police officers, firefighters, and other emergency service workers that have to work today to help keep us safe. A special Merry Christmas to our troops fighting for us overseas. -Jim
  13. I am glad that I could be of assistance to you on all levels. -Jim
  14. It seems that my original comment was taken as a personal attack and not as the contsructive criticism that is was intended, and has created quite a discussion while I have been down for the count with back problems. If you are wishing to attain a professional position as a land manager that will reqire you to write any type of report or communication, you will be much more successfull if you take the time to proof read and spell check what you have written. An inablity to use written communication effectively may be a major stubling block in obtaining and/or advancincing in employment in any field. I recieve written communications on a daily basis, and am less likely to give priority to one that is poorly written or one that isn't easily understandable. Again, I wish you luck in your pursuit of your career, and being able to take constructive criticism will take you along way. Have a happy and safe holiday season. -Jim
  15. It took me a bit of time to decipher what you were trying to say, but I think I got the gist of it. It's interesting that you find that the geocachers have the most problems with the rules. I guess the hunters in your area don't illegally hunt on private property or on lands closed to hunting. I guess hunters in your area don't poach, jacklight and hunt out of season. I guess hunters in your areas don't shoot up road signs, trail signs and park use signs. They do in my area. I guess people don't camp in your area where camping is not allowed. I guess campers in your area don't build illegal fire rings. I guess campers in your area don't leave trash behind. They do in my area. I guess hikers in your area don't venture off trail. I guess hikers in your area don't litter. I guess hikers in your area don't cross private property. I guess hikers in your area don't create unauthorized trails and "social paths". They do in my area. I'm not saying that because other user groups break the rules, its OK for geocachers to do so too. But to single out geocachers as the user group that has the least regard for the rules is absurd. I must agree with briansnat here. As a hunter, I have never hunted on an established trail, and have moved dead trees and vegitation around to create a blind. As a backpacker, I have gone off the trail to make camp and find water or poop . However, this has been done within the regulations of the land that I was doing the activity on. I have seen others, while particitpatings in an outdoor activity, violate the rules. This does not make the activity itself harmfull, just a handfull of participants. If the participants of these activities, including geocaching, were responcible in their participation on the activity, then there would be no need to have rules in the first place. It isn't the park's fault if a camper burns down half the woods because of having a campfire in violation of park policy, as it is not GC.com's fault that certain cachers wish to bend or ignore land use rules in the practice of their hobby. It is a shame that we as humans cannot respect each other enough so that we leave the area as good or better than when we arrived so that others may also have the same opportunity to enjoy it. I hope that if you are successfull in your quest to become a land manager, you don't judge entire groups based on the behavior of a small percentage of users who don't have enough respect for others to use the land in a way that minimizes impact and leaves it nice for the next person. -Jim
  16. I appreciate your arguement, however you may be taken more seriously if you spell check first. We all need to be responcible when placing or hunting caches. One of the things that draws many of us to the hobby is the chance to get into the outdoors and visit places that we may not have gone otherwise. Wise use of our natural resources will ensure their use by our children and grand-children. I can understand the concerns of many "environmentalists", however it is up to us to not provide them with ammunition to justify their accusations. -Jim
  17. Is this going to be another one of those track-in-the-box type threads again? -The sight doesn't work today, I waited till the last minute to download my waypoints, now it's everybody else's fault and if you disagree with me I will resort to stomping my feet and pouting? Give it a rest dude, you will just have to take a day off from 'caching. By the way, does the smell really go away if I blow dry my cherios? I could never figure out how to do that. Only 15 more shopping days till Christmas. -Jim edited to fix smiley problem
  18. Easy killer. They do the best they can with the resources they have available. For a great majority of the users the use of the site is free, and they ask for very little in return. I can understand your frustration, but failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency on their part. Try again later, it should be working. If not, consider it one of the many challanges of geocaching. -Jim
  19. Ok, so somebody knows his name, and it made for an interesting story. I still don't get what all the concern is about.
  20. Happy Thanksgiving everybody. I am most thankfull for turkeys on this wonderfull day. -Jim
  21. From somebody with relatively few posts and even fewer finds... I will be generally less likely to oppose something somebody with a large amount of posts/finds says as they have more experience. I tend to listen to those with "more time in" than I do and try to learn from them. It doesn't mean that I worship those with more seniority, but give some credit to what they say. Of course, my Dr prescribed me a narcotic, muscle relaxer, and anti-inflamitory for my back yesterday and I may just be "drunk posting". In which case please disregard anything I have said and blame it on the drugs. I love you man.... -Jim
  22. If he didn't want his name in the paper, then he shouldn't have consented to an interview.
  23. OK, I've fought the urge long enough. Here is a thread that Jusl89 started on Extreme Geocaching, in which he claims to be from Eire, PA (His spelling, not mine). Looks like somebody was on a fishing expedition, but lost interest and moved onto more fertile waters. Now onto the death by cactus thread... Why does anyone from Pennsylvania care about killer cacti in Arizona? Maybe, with your 1000 unlogged caches, you could enlighten we humble servants of the frog. If you were allowed to hide a cache near the trains, the cacher would notice that there are tracks there and would deductively reason that there is the potential for a train to come by as is the case with the lovely cache you have brought to our attention. There are cactus and a road nearby, any reasonable person would notice said items and use caution when near them. I'll bet you are the same person that they created "Caution: contents may be hot" labels for the coffee cups at McDonalds. I believe you have answered your own question and have created a fictitious account in order to come here and create problems. It is ashame that you have had to hide behind a mask and are too cowardly to come here and start problems openly. Have a nice day. -Jim
  24. "My name is Jim and I'm a geocacher..." It's not like geocaching is something to be ashamed of. Yes we all enjoy our privacy, some more than others, and I typically don't tell people my nickname when telling them about the hobby. However, if the world were to find out my true identity, it wouldn't bother me a bit. I've always had the belief that if you get your name or picture in the paper, it is your turn to bring the doughnuts. -Jim Geocaching Anonymous Founder and 12 step recovery program director.
