  1. Anywhere bookmarks are posted? I'm looking for Asheville, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and I 40 from TN/NC line heading east? Leaving on Saturday bright and early for an overnight trip. Planned to cache all the way from Fayetteville to Gatlinburg. I have pretty much everything from Fayetteville to Ashevillle. Need Asheville area all the way to Gatlinburg. Thanks in Advance, ABNSweetP
  2. If anyone knows who to contact regarding the keychains that were released in 2005 (I think as that was when 2 I konw were found) please email me - melissa@iassistonline.com or mboyd20@nc.rr.com. I found a keychain last summer and then placed it in another cache that has gotten wet and the new retriever can't read the contact info to let them know where the keychain is currently. If you have info email the 2 addresses above. Thanks, AbnSweetP
  3. Been caching since aug 05 and our 6 YO daughter LOVES it. There are times she doesn't want to go/isn't in the mood but when she is, she doesn't stop! She's decided she wants her own account and I have to go through our notes and log all the finds she's been with us on - we just reached 100 at years end and she's been on most of those with us - she'll have thousands by the time she's 18! And she's going to be hiding her first cache very soon as soon as we can find a great location. It's a cool game that the entire family can enjoy. But I never force her to go because I don't want her to end up hating the game.
  4. Lying, cheating, and fake logs seem to be a big thing lately. I keep hearing more and more about it from my caching friends around the country (USA). In our own vicinity, there are so many problems that we are about to the point we stop caching in our local area and only do caches when we travel. Cachers around here just can't keep to the rules or use their common sense. We have found a cacher who we have proof on about 12 caches that they have supposedly visited but has not signed the physical cache log on the date they say nor any date in the entire log (all these caches have original logs so have not been replaced). We have been told this cacher is an "upstanding member of the local cache community" and the 2 cache owners we contacted regarding this did not care and said they thought this cacher was great. I don't know the cacher personally and have no agenda. We also keep a monthly or bi monthly check on our 15 caches and delete any online log this does not have a matching name on the physical cache log. We are getting nasty emails back from cachers that we have deleted. Also, a group of about 6-10 people who know each other, they log each other in on caches even when the others aren't with them or they call and tell everyone where the cache is. We've also had about 6 caches muggled or archived since December because other cachers can't put back the cache as found or they move it to another spot. Or else they can't be stealthy...both of this is known from the log entries and in private emails to the finders. It's getting ridiculous. It's sad that our local community seems to not have a problem with people doing these things.
  5. I too am having a big problem with people in this area going into parks after hours. Recently a cache was posted at 3:30 pm, I got the notification at 3:45pm and as it was 1 mile from my house me and 6 year old daughter hopped in the car and went to the park to get it, we got there at 3:55 (have to drive over the mile to actually get to the parking) and walked to get it but it was almost 4:15 when I got within 20 feet of the cache...so I told her we'd have to come back at 8AM when they opened...since the gates would be locked (and the only other ways in were the railroad tracks or the paved trail that is dawn to dusk hours. Now there are signs all over the park perimeter that the park is monitored and is open from 8-4:30 and NO ONE is allowed on park premises after closing. Anyway, some dumba** local cacher who has no regards for rules/guidelines, as many in this area, logs the FTF and states that he found in the dark. Really upset my daughter as she wanted her first FTF and was going to do it before school the next day. I mean if we really wanted to get it sure, we could have stayed or snuck back in the park but I'm for the rules and I'm teaching them to my 6 yo...it was hard to explain why this cacher did what he did when she asked. Just venting....
  6. Y'all seem to be happy to meet others out on the trail. I'm the opposite...I am out there to be by myself or with my family for quiet. I don't want to talk to you if you come up on the cache I'm at. We are usually very stealthy (one look out, one signs the log while the 3rd trades the items) and can slip away before we are noticed. We've sat a few feet away under cover while others were at the cache and they never knew. If they do happen upon us especially before I sign the log, I just walk off without signing until they've gone. We really prefer annonimity. That's the thing that drew us to this sport...something we could do that would be fun and didn't involve interacations with other persons other than the occasional crap we get from online communications - we were blasted because of one of our log postings for no reason...it had nothing bad and no spoilers but they didn't like what we wrote so we've reverted to just posting Found Cache/Signed Log in the cache logs both at the cache and online. Anyway, that's my way :-)
  7. Not sure if it happens often but in the past 3 months we've come across 2 of these. One was a micro placed in the base of a parking lot light and the ground crew logged that they had noticed some activity at it different times and decided to check it out...thought it was neat AND the other was a not so nice note from the property owner asking someone to remove it so we did since no one else had bothered and let the cache owener know.
  8. Doing this since August and only 1 run in with a cop as he was locking the park gates and we were coming out while waiting for the other 3 cachers with us to come. In this instance I didn't tell him what we were doing because of his attitude but it's a call by call situation. I carry this brochure and wallet card with me as added insurance. http://www.geocacher-u.com/resources/brochure.html We're pretty stealthy and always have a cover when looking for urban caches, i.e. talking on the cell phone, getting something out of trunk, hood up etc while one retrieves the cache the other is keeping an eye out for muggles. 9. Just another thought on this to expand my original post (I'm new to posting in forums...cant you tell) You don't have to actually cross the highways on any of them that I've noticed unless you park in the wrong area because most of them are placed near the on/off ramps so you can park on the side of the ramp or on the side of the road above that crosses the highway. But I won't attempt these because I'm afraid it is illegal to be on this area. I don't need some state highway patrolman or county mounty hauling my butt off to the local jail...LOL Hubby tried one last month and I slid over to the drivers side and made it look like I was just stopping for a cell phone call...spent over 20 minutes appearing to be on the phone while he looked and every car (and must've been 100 cars) looked at me! I know if I am driving down the highway or interstate and see someone off in the woods between this area (and I've seen plenty of hitchers and homeless camping in these areas around the country when travelling) I am leary of what they are doing and I guess that also is antoher reason I won't do it... I don't want to meet up with someone who is less than honorable in intent. Anyway, thanks for the replies thus far
  10. I have a question I can't find an answer for any where. It's probably been right under my nose but I haven't located it. It'll also settle an argument between myself and a couple of other cachers. Would a cache (of any type) placed in the large land areas between an on/off ramp and a highway or interstate be considered "legal"?
