  1. We have a 62 and it's our favorite GPS. We also have an Oregon 450. Accuracy is just about as identical (between the two) as they come - regardless of what 'stuff' they both have. Hand to hand out-in-the-field experience has shown us, they're the same. If you're into splitting hairs & atoms, measuring the wind speed, exact wind direction, the rotational axis tilt of the earth at that exact moment, speed of the earth, plus your left hip is heavier than the other thus over compensating for how you are standing with GPS in hand.... Well then, you might have an accuracy problem. But for me, it's been a pretty dadgum good GPS!! Do some googling and reach reviews.... You can't go wrong.
  2. That's exactly what I would've done. Emailed him/her and kindly requested they EDIT their log to get rid of the spoilers. I would specifically explain why I do not want spoilers listed. He/She has the opportunity to abide by your request....and failed to do so. DELETE. In some cases, I'll be nice and email them again and say....I just deleted your log. Feel free to log it again without spoilers. Thanks And if they do it again, I'll just delete it a 2nd time and never tell them I did it.
  3. We have a Nuvi 2450LM that we use - and we also use GSAK to put caches on them. You're already familiar with the Garmin units & the usage of GSAK to put geocaches on them. I've had only a couple different Nuvi models and I'm pretty certain....they're all still the same in how they are setup/programmed to accept geocaches into them. There are a gazillion different ways to upload geocaches into them and they all act differently depending on how you upload them. So - the 'method' for doing it stays the same (more or less). My 2450 will show the caches on the map depending on the ZOOM level. And again...depending on how you upload them into the unit plays a big part in the results you get on the screen. As for the units themselves...... You don't need all the bells & whistles (music, photos, fm transmitter, bluetooth, etc). A larger screen for sure - but not too large that you can't mount it in your vehicle. The Lifetime Maps are always nice too (but will jack up the price of the unit). Shop around....I did a very quick google search and found a 2450LM for $100 free shipping. http://g.factoryoutletstore.com/cat/24539-53314/Garmin-Nuvi-2400-Series.html?cid=82942&chid=4272&gclid=CKPY_uvIirwCFQPNOgodSlMAyg There are other models that are even cheaper. Go to Garmin's website, read the full descriptions, do a little research....and shop around.
  4. If you are a premium member, then you should read-up on "pocket queries" Pocket queries are a method of grabbing geocaching data from the geocaching.com and putting it into a file format to upload into your GPS device. http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=118 Pocket Queries are then uploaded to your GPS units. Depending on the GPS unit you buy, could vary in how you upload. But most require you hook up to your home computer via USB. http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=347
  5. 1) I never met a cache I didn't like. Some I like more than others. 2) All caches can be 'likable' if they're maintained. 3) Variety is the key to success to enjoying the hobby. 'Unlikable' caches make those 'likable' ones look even better. 4) There are no classes, tests, or skills required to hide a cache. It is not a competition and we don't have winners or losers. 5) Respect your fellow geocachers. Not everyone has the ability to live up to your own high standards 6) If you find yourself nitpicking at every cache, then you're obviously not enjoying the hobby. Time to find another hobby.
  6. Yup...probably facebook. Our own local group has a private facebook group page. It's a great way to plan geocaching trips, advertise our monthly get-to-gethers, ask for hints, tips...etc. Afterall - most of the folks in our local group have become personal friends and facebook helps us keep in touch without having to sift thru a nationally targetted forum. I like Faceook to communicate with my friends, family, and geocaching folks. You can set things up to SEE everything....or limit what you see. I don't fully understand how it works, but I have most of my friends turned off (notifications/not following). I only see the important stuff from my closest friends & geocachers. I've been visiting forums for many many years for various hobbies....Forums are great as a reference tool to ask questions or just chat/kill boredom or whatever. But....when forums get TOO BIG and have TOO MUCH traffic, you get overloaded with posts and people get stupid & lazy. They don't want to use the search button or google to answer their questions. You end up getting s***-tons of the same question over & over again when you can find the answer by using the search button. If you have a facebook account, then you know how annoying some folks can be posting EVERYTHING. Facebook is just easier to see the 'important' stuff VS a forum that you have to sift thru EVERYTHING.
  7. See your other post... http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=318769&pid=5339750&st=0entry5339750
  8. The only way you can delete them from your GPS, is to download a new file. I'm going to assume the caches you want to remove are the 'found' caches? Re-run your pocket queries (without found caches) and download the file to your GPS. It should be named the same and totally replace the original file.
  9. Using GSAK seems to be the way to put caches onto the Nuvi.. (as POI's or Favorites). There are multiple different ways of doing it and get multiple different results. After several different evolutions of doing it different ways... we've settled on using the GSAK Export Garmin POI function. It's been a while since I've done it, but I believe we save this file on the desktop and drag it onto the Nuvi. One of these days, when I have time (holidays) - I want to document the process we use. We used to use GSAK, a macro, POI Loader...but that became inconsistent and problematic (for some unknown reason). My husband likes the export - as it's quick.
  10. Give it some time....sometimes there is a poor and/or lack of 'connection' to Groundspeak for a variety of reasons. It'll clear itself up in due time. Close the app and reopen it and try again. It has nothing to do with your APP but everything to do with the 'connection' to the internet.
  11. Lieblweb

    2 owners?

Create a TEAM account on here... ( team cache tofu ) Create a gmail account. Setup the gmail account to forward to both of you. Setup gmail account as your primary email on your team account Both of you would have access to the team account AND the gmail account. Both of you would be required to maintain caches, maintain gmail account & maintain cache pages.
  12. I'm in... Gotta buy a TB tag!! Do you need the information for the goal? In my case, I'm just picking a cache as a goal and I can pickup the TB when or if it arrives in it. The less personal information on the cache page the better.
  13. Can't argue with that...and to elaborate on that: Be totally honest. Because, if you lie....they will have suspicions to haul your a** in. Police are PEOPLE. Buck up...and talk to them like you would anyone else. It's even better if you can show them the container and log book. If you have a dark history and a reason for them to haul you in...then, maybe you shouldn't be caching at night!!!
  14. It's your vision and whatever you dream it to be. Once you get a better picture of the details - I would post another thread (with a more specific title) to hopefully gain more folks to volunteer. It would be neat to have a listing of all the TB's (webpages) and their start & ending location goals. And to see how many make it there. Would we know - ahead of time - to whom they are trying to reach? That in itself - would be neat to 'get to know' the person to whom you're TB paling with. Good Luck!!
  15. Never heard of iGeoknife before....interesting. Sorry I can't answer your question, but I will be watching this thread to learn more about it.
  16. So....in a sense.... this is kinda like a PEN PAL (without the postal service)?? I think its neat and I'd willing to participate. You would need to come up with detailed 'instructions' of how its going to work or else you'll be bombarded with questions. For instance: 1) People sign up with you 2) Does each person need a TB to play? 3) Is it a paired exchange? Person A to Person B and Person B to Person A. Or Person A to Person B, then forwarded to Person C and to Person D...etc. However you think it should be run....Assuming the TB's don't disappear, map out the path they should take so you'll know ahead of time what to expect and/or any problems that might be uncovered. And if some of them do disappear, does it change the dynamic of the progression? (did all that make sense?
  17. It's just a suggestion and something for them to think about when making a purchase - to make sure they know exactly what they are getting. I'm directionally challenged, so I tend to 'need' (ask my husband) the 3 axis compass. My husband can easily orientate himself accordingly (I think he has a map in his head) - but even he didn't like the Explorist GC that we bought. Like going backwards in technology....
  18. Yes.... The rule of thumb is...If a TB or coin has been 'Marked as Missing' for a year....you can re-release them. I currently have two TB's that are re-releases. If I have a TB copy tag, I will reuse that. Otherwise, I've just stamped the numbers on a piece of aluminum/steal & added a cheapo traveler. Done. I have two more TB's that I could re-release anytime. The TB's that I've re-released....I will change the name slightly - adding "II" so I know in a quick glance that they are re-releases.
  19. It's already been done....(more or less) There are many TB's (and groups of TB's) that are in a RACE to reach certain destinations. It's an unknown whether or not they reach their destinations at all.... I'm sure some of them make it and some don't It's a neat idea and you could easily do it. Just don't get discouraged with it (or the game) if it doesn't turn out the way you'd expect it to.
  20. I'm in love!! LOL OMG, I had to google 'sand spur' because I had no idea what that was - and I'm laughing really hard right now. In our neck of the woods - Burn Hazel. OUCH!!! But yeah....I totally agree.
  21. Your first step, is to understand pocket queries and creating a route. However - this doesn't necessarily show you 'distances' that you are looking for. Another tool - is GSAK. GSAK is a very powerful & somewhat complicated software that does all sorts of things. It works with and utilizes the pocket queries that you create to do more with them..... If you're a techy kinda person and have time....you could learn it. I personally only dabble in GSAK and haven't done much of anything with it. My husband does all sorts of things with it ...(over my head). GSAK is one of those 'must haves' in geocaching - especially if you're addicted to the hobby.
  22. Try your local gun shows...... always lots of ammo cans there. I'm just not sure how much (you could haggle though).
  23. I hate the cold weather.... but when there's a geocaching goal in mind, the moood srikes you, and the cache is overall easier in the winter (without the snow) - we've been known to do it. In southern PA, we don't see much snow but it can get cold. If there are harder terrain or bushwhacking involved, we'll tackle them in the winter to avoid ticks & poison ivy. This picture doesn't look like it but...it was 22 degrees out. Took my jacket off so I could reach around in the water for a container. My husband and I took turns in the water.
