  1. Thanks for posting this procedure now that it's been tested to work. Also thanks to Rhialto for coming up with the idea for this (having to remove a battery to get the unit to get into the 'now able to power on' state). This will hopefully help some of the users experiencing this glitch. Maybe Garmin should also be notified of this.
  2. What I'm wondering is if 'Dakota Jim' has a newer firmware version than 2.20 / 2.10 that corrects the WAAS bug since he received a replacement unit very recently, direct from Garmin. If so, then the update will likely be released very soon.
  3. What firmware is on your Vista HCx replacement unit? Others here including myself have software (firmware) v2.20 / GPS software v2.10 Also, 'captain454' had the power on/off problem that he resolved himself by doing a hard-reset on the unit. See post #61 above.
  4. See my post #17 on the first page of this thread. Click here
  5. I have both the Vista C and the Vista HCx and the screen sizes for both are identical. You should have no problems with the item if it's being specifically labeled for the Cx. The only difference in the eTrex series units are with the original eTrex black & white units (and their brothers) where the screen size is slightly longer and narrower than the eTrex C (color) units. To simplify, all the eTrex B & W unit screens are identical and all the color unit screens are identical.
  6. MapSource will take care of all of it, including replacing the existing .img. You just select the maps and click the "Send to Device" icon. The file named 'gmapsupp.img' is the 'supplemental' mapset that is currently on the SD card and is the mapset you are seeing when the GPS is operating and this SD card is in the unit. This is NOT the basemap which cannot be overwritten. Be sure you want to actually delete this mapset before uploading any maps to the unit. If you want, you can backup this file so you may use it again just in case. If you upload any new maps to the unit, this file *will* be overwritten so be forewarned. MapSource does NOT warn you of this. Be sure and read the link that 'fratermus' posted in his reply.
  7. Be sure & let us know if a hard reset fixes your power problem. so it looks like this is the only MAJOR problem with the HCX? if so, do you think it would be okay to purchase the unit and just get the download for the patch when they fix the problem? i just don't want to buy a unit with a problem that will have me send the unit in to get fixed when i can just buy a fixed unit. The power problem that 'captain454' is having may very well be isolated to his unit only. I have yet to hear of anyone else having the same problem but I'm just going by the info on these boards. If this problem were widespread, you'd definitely be hearing about it here. If the problem he's having is corrected by a hard-reset, then it would be a total non-issue. Regardless of the problem 'captain454' is having with his unit, I would not hesitate to order an HCx if I did not already own one. That's just my opinion... Edit: looks like while I was posting, the captain's problem was solved by the hard-reset.
  8. Be sure & let us know if a hard reset fixes your power problem.
  9. The microSD/TransFlash cards (either pre-loaded from Garmin or blank which you will load maps onto yourself using MapSource) can both be used with the x units. I'm sure Garmin would love to sell you their pre-loaded cards but you're free to use either or both. Since you already own City Nav, you will have to purchase an additional unlock code to use it with a new unit. Topo needs no unlock code.
  10. Anyone to try this? Can we still read the temperature of the unit? I just verified that this diagnostics mode still works and yes, the internal temp of the unit can still be monitored.
  11. Oh great... Looks like I threw away a $30 rebate with last weeks garbage since I tossed out the packaging with the UPC code. I'm usually really good (alomost TOO good) when it comes to keeping product packaging but for some reason, I figured I simply would not be needing it for anything. I have the Amazon.com receipt along with with everything BUT the UPC code/packaging.
  12. captain454, Please fill out and submit a bug report at the Garmin website. Hopefully they will acknowledge & address the WAAS bug and may be able to help out with your power-on/off problem. You may want to call them though about your power problem since the email route can take a couple of days.
  13. That's correct. I have no power on/off issues but the WAAS bug is indeed verified here on my end.
  14. Did you start having this problem before or after the firmware update? Sounds like after (correct me if I'm wrong). If it was after, it sounds like a bad firmware flash. If the unit cannot be powered up at all now, there's really not much that can be done & I'd say a call to Garmin is in order. Like Miragee said, Garmin is usually very good about these kinds of repairs.
  15. The Vista HCx has a built-in electronic compass and barometer. The Legend is the same as with Vista with the omission of these two features. Hint: the Garmin page here lets you compare units...just checkmark the ones you want to compare and hit the "compare" button.
  16. Mine came with software (or firmware) version 2.20 & GPS software version 2.10. I checked earlier today using webupdater to see if anything newer had been released but nothing so far.
  17. Ok, your WAAS problem is now my problem. I have verified that WAAS is indeed being reset to "disabled" after a position lock, then a power-down/power-up sequence. Looks like you found a bug. I'm still not seeing this on my unit. You may want to check your battery contacts along with the contacts in the unit to make sure they're clean. I've had power glitches in the past on different units and cleaning the contacts seemed to remedy them. But then again, yours may be doing something beyond a "glitch".
  18. I'm not seeing this on a shutdown/power up instance. WAAS *is* being disabled but here's what I'm seeing...if the unit cannot get a fix on any WAAS sats for a predetermined amount of time (that amount of time is unknown to me), it then proceeds to automatically disable WAAS in the system setup menu. Maybe you can verify this... Here's how I am seeing this. If you plug the unit into a USB port, it will not automatically power on (the same as with my Vista C), but will power on while plugged in to the USB port by using the on/off switch. It's verified that it is indeed using external power by the "electrical plug" symbol on the Main Menu screen and by pressing the on/off switch. If I unplug the USB cord to the unit, I get the "lost power" message and the unit proceeds to run on battery power. If I then plug the USB cord back in, it goes to external power. It all seems normal to me. You may want to verify your USB port(?) One thing I noticed is that the unit will not continuously record barometer readings while the unit is powered off (also know as "pressure trend recording"). I don't know if this was something that they omitted in the Cx units (both the Vista and 60CSx) or if it's a new "feature". Anyways, the Vista and the Vista C were both able to do this but the HCx does not. I sorta miss this on the new unit...
  19. Sputnik 57 is correct. The tide table data is in Topo 2008 and also in the original US Topo version (but not in the 24k National Parks version) and an early version of MetroGuide (v3). It's also in all versions of Blue Charts. Also note that Garmin doesn't officially disclose (or not that I've ever heard) if the tide station data is included with the mapping data in any particular product with the exception of (naturally) Blue Charts.
  20. It might be better to use a new sock (or at least wash the old sock if you're gonna use it).
  21. The webpage is correct, but only in that there are no tide tables built-in or pre-loaded on the unit. The unit does indeed support tide tables but as I stated elsewhere in my posts, they have to be user-loaded to the unit by uploading map data that contains the tide stations. This is where the webpage is a bit vauge and misleading. Be assured that if you have the map data with tide stations, the unit *will* display tide tables.
  22. That's the usual scenario for new unit releases from Garmin. The manual usually takes a couple of weeks to be posted on the unit's product page.
