And to top off the confusion, there is a "new" GTM 20. The newly redesigned model has the traffic circuitry built into an in-line "pod" or bulge on the cable near where the connector plugs into the cradle. It also apparently does not have the LED indicators (power and data sync) of the older unit. See here for an image:

I hear reports of this unit being worse in performance than the older GTM 20...and you also have that in-line bulge near the cradle to try to conceal as well. The bulge also supposedly contains an external antenna connector (no sign or mention of an actual available antenna anywhere)...that's just one more cable to have to deal with.
The older model has the traffic circuitry built into the 12v plug itself, the power and data sync LEDs and does not have the in-line circuitry bulge. See here for an image:
There is no mention anywhere of these product design changes...you'd think Garmin would at least designate them as v1.0/v2.0. The part number is the same yet the units are totally different. Buyer beware...

I never knew it was there. It shows on my 24K Topo MicroSD card.
You should also be able to search for the tide info on the unit in addition to selecting them from the map. They will be listed under Tide Stations.

The nuvi 7x0 (or any other nuvi for that matter except for the 5xx crossover) will not receive tracks, even if it was created by the unit itself. The track aspect of the nuvi is one-way only...from nuvi to PC.

I have also been using GPS for years and years (first units were Magellan GPS 315 and Garmin eMap) and feel your pain. I feel today's nuvi line is indeed the most dumbed-down autonav GPS unit around. Beginning with the first nuvi 350, features that were standard in hand-held GPS units (like the 60 series) have been stripped out leaving the unit dumbified. All subsequent nuvi releases have more features removed with others added (from the ones that were stripped out initially). To put it simply, Garmin has come up with an ingenious way to keep the nuvi line "fresh" and that is to add new features from the hand-held feature pool while removing others, creating a "new" model every six months. Each new nuvi released does have something "new" but always has something removed from the previous model. True, some very useful new features have been added (like Lane Assist) but of what practical use is viewing rendered buildings in 3D on the map screen (newest model's "3D Buildings" feature)? I can already see the building in true life right where I am...why do I need to see it in 3D on the GPS screen? At the same time, the map display is going the way of -removed- features...street and other useful detail has been removed at certain zoom levels (I assume to keep your destination/route more focused). So removing useful street detail and the ability to display city names on the screen are now unimportant while displaying 3D Buildings is? I don't understand that "logic" at all. On the newest "high-end" models, your waypoint names are not even displayed on the screen anymore; all you see is it's icon. You would assume that a model being a year newer (nuvi 765T) with a much faster processor would be able to draw the same amount of map detail that the older model (nuvi 760) did...your assumptions are dead wrong.

Bottom line is that a seasoned GPS user (such as yourself) will likely never be happy with any nuvi model that is out there if you're looking for features equal to hand-helds as the nuvi is indeed designed for ease of use (get you from point A to point B ) with virtually no user configurability. You have to look at the new units from a new perspective (what it does NOW) rather than how it compares to the feature-rich hand-helds (or what you think it SHOULD do).

IMO, they really need to cut back on number of models. It confuses the public to death.
Agreed. The same holds true for the nuvi line with currently 34 models...that's down from about 40 just recently. Maybe they can continue the trend...
Hopefully they won't discontinue NEW models as fast as they did with the nuvi 850/880. Those models only lasted 6 months before being discontinued just a few days ago.

The unit said "nuvi 200" but the UI said nuvi 205...
Curious, seems if they have the new GUI, then internally it would say 205, 255, etc. not 200, 250, etc.
When I mentioned "The unit said nuvi 200", I was referring to the retail package, not what the OS stated the unit was...I don't know what the OS says on these rebadged units.

The "new" 200's do indeed have the new UI (as do the other rebadged units that are out there). Actually, some users who received "new" nuvi 200's in other forums questioned whether or not they actually had a 200 since the UI was totally different than the screenshots posted and even the screenshots in the online user's guide. The unit said "nuvi 200" but the UI said nuvi 205...

I see your point & I agree. Actually according to the Garmin website, the retail price for the 200 is $199.99 while the 205 is $189.99 so the 205 is not even being discounted at all under the 200 label.

It could be that Garmin can't discontinue the 200 yet as it's not actually that old. Maybe they are out of 200 build components and rather than doing another production run of "true" 200's they've simply rebadged since it's actually cheaper for them to do so.
This is all just pure speculation (with a ton of logic)....only Garmin knows the real reason why. I personally feel it is simply cost-saving measures.

Too many nuvis with too many slight variations. Having parts consolidated for manufacture makes things alot easier and cheaper. Why have a different 200 main PCB and a different 205 main PCB (different parts, different chips/components) when you can have only one? In the end, both Garmin and the end-user wins out here. Garmin has less parts to manufacture/stock/inventory and the end-user actually gets a better unit than what they're paying for.

So are you saying that everything sold as a nuvi 200 now is actually a nuvi 205?
Not necessarily...if you purchase from new stock, I would say yes. The trouble is, some retailers still have and are still selling old stock. One visual way to tell for sure if the unit is rebadged:
Original nuvi 200: SD™ Card slot
Re-badged: microSD™ Card slot
So, if the nuvi 200 in question has a microSD™ Card slot, this is a rebaged 205 now being sold as a nuvi 200 since the original nuvi 200 had a standard SD™ Card slot.
This rebadging also reportedly applies to a few other units but I can't recall exactly which ones (likely the 200W).

That's correct. The first nuvi 200's that were released do not have the sat constellation screen, despite pressing/holding the sat bars.
The newer nuvi 200's are actually nuvi 205's, just rebadged as 200's, likely to consolidate & reduce Garmin's inventory/parts/manufacturing nightmares due to having so many different nuvi models. The original 200's also had only 1GB of memory for the "lower 48 states" mapset. Updating to the 2009 maps required the user to delete all unneeded voice/text/help files to get the update to fit in the 1GB memory. I would assume the next map update will likely not even fit and the user will have to remove a state or two from the mapset to fit it on the unit. Now with the rebadged nuvi 200's this is no longer an issue with the increased memory of the unit.

Sometimes firmware "updates" introduce more problems while fixing others. On v2.30, I had never seen a shut down. However, after updating to v2.50, I have seen a few, mostly while switching between the traffic map and the normal map. I've never had a problem with powering the unit back on after the shut-down.
It could also be a hardware issue, despite this being the second unit that does this. It almost sounds as if the unit is overheating, then shutting down. After a cooling period (your stated 15 minutes), it starts back up. I've had to return two different 765's due to jumpy touch-screen issues (many other users are also reporting bad touch-screens so it's not an isolated issue).
I would call/contact Garmin and see what they recommend. It could be either buggy firmware or bad hardware. Buggy firmware can be corrected, bad hardware cannot.

If so, you may want to bypass that form and email tech support directly. You'll have to include your unit info (serial # and firmware version) in the email along with your issues with the product. I have -always- gotten quicker results by emailing tech support directly.

Just off the top of my head & admittedly a long-shot but try changing the shut-down sound in the unit to a different one, cycle power a few times and then change it back to your default sound. It won't take but a minute or so to try.

You can change the menu/interface colors but this won't help you. You do have the option of setting the colors for marine use & daytime/nighttime color mode. You may want to try one of these as it may help...but likely not.

You may have already done so but I thought I'd mention it anyways...have you cleaned the battery contacts in the unit? I don't mean simply wiping them off with a cloth...use a pencil eraser and clean them thoroughly. They may look clean but in reality, may have enough invisible oxidation on them to prevent the batteries from making proper contact, especially if the batteries were in the unit for an extended period of time.
I once had a Magellan GPS 315 that had a problem with invisible oxidation on the contacts that periodically needed to be cleaned. The first time it happened, I thought the unit was toasted since the batteries I had installed were brand new. Once the contacts were cleaned, it powered right up.

I don't know what's the story with their car navigation GPS's but as far as I'm concerned, I'll try a different brand next time. I don't hear anyone complaining about them. So basically they're losing customers trust and damaging their own reputation.

There are long-standing issues with the nuvi series that Garmin simply ignores...one example is current units not being able to display when the internal battery has completed charging. This simple ability worked just fine on the nuvi 3xx/6xx series but has been broken ever since. Brand new models released (the 7x5 series) still cannot accomplish this simple task that has worked just fine in the past.

First thing you should do is update the unit software if you haven't already done so. The only way to do this is by using WebUpdater (no direct update download for these newer units)

Try v2.8.2 just released. It may help even though the changelog states that it's "not required"...silly to release a new version that supposedly does nothing and is not required for Windows.
