  1. Actually it might surprise some just where some of the map/chart data does come from. Much of the marine chart info used by one particular company originates from Russia (Navy). Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go
  2. It is not so much the "grade" (as such) but the manner in which some different receivers are used. Most survey grade receivers are dual frequency but again it's how they are used. There is basically very little difference in accuracy between a so called survey grade receiver used in the same manner as say a simple handheld. One is $20,000, the other $200 but any SPS navigation accuracy difference is not really worth talking about. However put "2" survey grade receivers together and depending on the methods used then one will start to see some difference. BUT there will be limitations based on generally Time and/or distance and it's more to do with the way the equipment is used. Then there's some $200 handhelds that can actually output raw data, which if recorded over a sufficient period of time and post processed would produce quite accurate results for a single frequency receiver. Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go
  3. No not initializing for initial position (and possibly date/time). Initializing simply makes things start worker quicker than simply turning it on and letting it find things by itself. Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go
  4. Some "net" history CAN BE FOUND HERE but there's 2 people who contributed more than anyone else to the "capability" of the sport, Dr Ivan Getting and Dr Bradford Parkinson. Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go
  5. Download the GPS300 MANUAL, good place to start for the basics. Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go
  6. There's nothing to indicate there was any satellite availability issue at that time for the location in question. However availability on the ground could be affected by many other issues, which might give that impression. There does appear to be some other funny issues on July 27 around this location but satellite availability wasn't one of them. Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go
  7. So many updates, so many on the same day and all appear to have common WAAS related changes. Always interesting when so much software gets changed like this, sort of makes one wonder a little. Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go
  8. The things some people believe , unbelievable but off course it's a joke, nobody would believe that , but then .... Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go
  9. It's not quite that easy but it can be as long as you watch the signs. Going north from a north latitude then as you have it add it on. Going EAST(+) from a WEST(-) longitude then that will reduce the longitude. W118 42.619' moved 0.255' E becomes W118 42.364' Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go
  10. The GPS. Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go

  12. And while they're at it, they (includes many makers apart from garmin) should also give the poor users some flexibility in defining masking angles. But then that might reduce the number of satellites in fix and of course everybody knows that the more satellites the better the fix , well that's propaganda for ya. Cheers, Kerry. 13. No Australian datum's are weid , just different as all datums are. But yes we can apply single conversion formula to much of Oz as much of the old data are contiguous data sets, unlike the US. Actually the problem with NAD27 is that it's so disjointed and variable being based on so much data variations over the years that there simply is no one single formula that adequately handles the conversion. GPSr's do a rather rough converison and some even have a dozen or so "different" NAD27 transformations to cover the US. Distortion grid model handles this type of conversion far better (and the official way) than any single formula ever will, but I suppose it will depend on just how accurate you want your straightforward conversion to be. Do a search for NTv2 (National Transformation version 2), which might give you some background into the principle of grid shift systems. Cheers, Kerry. 14. Really one has to wonder about this thinking that the decision is between simply 2 makes? Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go
  15. It will make some difference but wouldn't call it a big difference. Not sure if there's a software revision that extended the format but might be worth looking into. You'll minimize the impact if you round up or down and not simply drop off the last digit. As if that was 24.147 then input is as 24.15 etc. Cheers, Kerry. 16. Will depend a little just where in California you are but somewhere between 10 & 15 degrees, probably more like about 13 but will depend on local obscura. Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go

  19. quote:Originally posted by GEO*Trailblazer 1:? Just say's made in the U.S.A.,Meets all Goverment standards. No Brand Name. 630-670 nM NO make and model makes it difficult to understand how you "project angles to reference points,And Azimuths" especially being a "laser level" and all. So how do you do this? Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go
  20. The GPS is working in numbers that to many are meaningless. Basically if a GPSr is raised vertically about a certain point (forgetting the affects of a few other issues) the underlying coordinates change in all 3 directions (XYZ) but the conversion to Lat/Long/height only affects the height (if raised vertically and all other things equal) and the lat/Long being horizonatal coordinates effectively stay the same regardless if one is on the ground or 1000's of metres above the ground. What your seeing is normal and has nothing to do with changing height. Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go
  21. Power lines can, depends on the voltage but I'd be looking for other reasons first. The wall could also be an issue (and/or) depending on how close you were to it and the affect it might have been having on a critical part of the sky, at that particular time. Could also be totally unrelated and be interference from some other source. Without looking at and eliminating first the affect of the wall as an obstruction it can be difficult to put the finger at any specific cause. Cheers, Kerry. I use it to project angles to reference points,And Azimuths sometimes, yes you could use it for that as well but have never encountered it here. What make and model do you use? Cheers, Kerry. 24. quote:I already know the answer to it is that so? then apart from dropping these big sounding terms at least go away and check what deflections of the vertical are. You see TB you have a very short memory but mine tells me that once not all that long ago I spent a lot of time (obviously wasted time) trying to talk to you about much of this but all you dis was keep going around and around and around in circles, with no clear direction or intent. This is one such case and if you want some more of this rubbish then one only has to look http://ubbx.Groundspeak.com/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=5726007311&f=4016058331&m=4316009691&r=69160454#69160454 Cheers, Kerry. 25. Some of the land laws have no direct relationship to all this stuff about what has and hasn't changed as if that was the case there would be some major upheavels. And by the way I've never said anything of the sort that now we have a better system of measurement that this should affect land boundaries, that's garbage. You know the poor old earth is getting tired, slowed down 13 seconds in 20 odd years, time is changing not a great lot one can do about it either, same as this country keeps moving 60-70mm every year, nothing we can do about that either except realize it's a fact and be able to work around it. What you need to realize is that there's a lot more reasoning behind what you see as some type of conspiracy. quote:? This line North from the 5th P.M. has an observation of the steady move of Polaris, West,Annual Westward slippage, and also the magnetic field has moved approximatly 7.5 degrees West in 150 years of observations, what is now,and you will correct me, deflec99,this being the delection angle of the vertical adjustment of the NAVD National Vertical Datum. why would anybody even bother touching that one but put simply you have absolute no idea what defelction of the vertical is and for someone to suggest that it has moved 7.5 deg west in 150 years is obviously well out of their depth. Listen here TB vertical deflections of the vertical are measured in arc-seconds and in no way shape or form even get past the 1 minute mark, 7.5 degrees BS. As for your inferral about taking discussions off point, you should adopt the principle of getting to the point, get my point Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go
