GPSBabel can also then send the resulting route to your Garmin, but it worth mentioning that on the handhelds, multipoint routing doesn't work the way you want it to work in an automobile; you get straight lines between the caches and not turn-by-turns. That's just a limit of the handhelds.
As others have mentioned, the various dashtops handle all this much better.
Nah, my handheld is GPSmaps 76Csx, it does auto-routing with turn by turn, audible tones to give you a heads up for upcoming turns, and even recalculates automatically if you miss a turn. I believe the 60Csx does this also. What I like about mine is it's shock resistant, waterproof and something most handhelds don't offer, it floats. (I like to go boating with my GPSr) I think combining streets and trips with GPSbabel to get my desired "traveling salesman" route figured out I'll be good for taking a group of cache points and letting the computer figure out the best route to hit them all.

I was afraid of that. Anyone know if you can create a route using streets and trips then export it to the garmin?
Also, is there anywhere I can find a FAQ with helpful tips on getting the most out of my Garmin with City Navigator for geocaching? I know the basics, but I want to know what I'm missing.

I too think palm should be included. Even older palms can do GPSr. I had a Handspring Visor version 3.x I hooked up my Garmin etrex via serial cable and was able to use mapping programs on the palm.
Of course now I have a TX which has the capability of bluetooth GPSr.
Still, I think it's sad that this new game essentially leaves out the VAST VAST majority of cachers who use the various handheld GPSr's. Are you getting kickbacks from Microsoft and Garmin to increase sales of their newest gadgets? I mean what other reason could there be to add a new game that would require over half of all current players to run out and buy completely new hardware to play? Sounds kind of gimicky and more like a promo deal for particular hardware companies.

OK here's what I'm wondering. How do you go about taking 10 waypoints for the caches you want to find on a particular outing and get the Garmin City Navigator NT 2008 to arrange them in the most direct route? Can it even be done by the software, or do I have to go through and manually arrange them in a particular order?
In case it matters I have a Garmin 76CSx and Mapsource City Navigator NT 2008
Also, is it true Mapsource is coming out with a new release of City Navigator, and that 2008 isn't the newest? (when I loaded it up I did notice that it said the maps were 2007, though it called the software City Navigator NT 2008)
Thanks for any help. I already searched through pages of search results, maybe the various key words I used weren't good enough, or maybe I'm asking a question that's so stupid no one else has asked.

First you need to aquire either EasyGPS (no hints) or Geocaching Swiss Army Knife (partial hints). ok?
Ok I have downloaded GSAK...will this also show me size, difficulty, last found in the GPS?
If you use GSAK to send the waypoints to your GPSr, it is easy to get the name of the cache, and even part of the hint using the codes in the "Smart Name" feature. You can arrange these codes anyway you want and use the ones you find most useful. This is the code I use for the Waypoint name:
%smart=6 %con1%typ1%dif1%ter1
This includes part of the Name, the Size of the container, the Type of cache (Traditional, Multi, Virtual, Puzzle), the Difficulty and Terrain (based on a 10-point scale).
To get part of the hint, I use this code in the Waypoint Description blank:
%Name=10 %hint
So do you have to Use GSAK to send the way points then? It will somehow change the GCXXXX to a more meaningful name?
Garmin should allow more characters in the description blank. My 76csx has room for a full paragraph worth of letters, more if you could scroll, but all it will actually let you put in there amounts to a few words.

I've had the Legend for several years, worked fine until it took too many falls. (stuff happens)
So this Christmas I got a Garmin 76Csx. I really really like it. It's bigger, yes, but that also means it has a bigger screen. Wow does it acquire a signal fast. I can easily handle one handed operation, the buttons are above the screen not below like the 60 series. I find it easier to navigate single handed than on my Legend, I like the rocker (though it did get some getting used to) and I like the layout. I would find the 60 to be cumbersome with the buttons located at the bottom of the device. I am so eager to upgrade my mapping software from my old Roads & Rec and get City Navigator for auto-routing.
Another nice thing, I boat and this thing will float.
My price was $305 with free shipping from Amazon. Could have gone with the 76cx and foregone the digital compass and barometric altimeter for $280. So far as that barometric altimeter goes, I am not impressed, keeps thinking I am changing altitude when the weather changes.
You want small go Vista, you want rich features, go 76Cx or 76Csx. You want the rich features and to have it look more like a radio, a little more awkward button layout, same overall size and doesn't float go 60cx or cxs. I think what the 76 has done form factor wise was take the basic setup that the 60 has, put it in a different case and that blank space next to the antenna that is now enclosed...that provides the flotation. Just a hunch, because except for the way the cases are the insides are the same, and the 76 floats, the 60 doesn't. Both are same height and width except at the top where the antenna is.

I'm finally going to replace my old Garmin Legend. I'm getting another Garmin and I noticed that they now have some new feature called Geocaching Mode. Just what does this mode do? I'm looking at the 76Cx if that makes any difference.

raised within 30 miles of Salem up to age 15 (except one year at age 3 in Prineville), from 15 on have lived in Salem since. (except a year in Keizer which is right next to Salem, and 3 days when I thought I'd move to Madras, Oregon) My dad was also born and raised in Oregon, my mom is a California transplant, but she moved here with my grandparents when she was 5 so she's almost native.
My wife also was born and raised here in Oregon.

While in certain areas it would not be a good idea, particularly in parks and so forth....but so far as packing a machette or any other legal weapon or tool, you have the right to keep and bear arms, so long as you are not concealing it, you would be within your civil liberties.

I read that story...first...the girl in the picture isn't blonde, but the girl writing the story claims to be blonde. Second, I searched every cache on the site, and that user has not logged a single find. This is definately a sham. I mean fine, you want to start up a site, ok, cool, but don't go creating fake entries, fake stories, and so on, that's just plain dishonest.

Gonna have to get me some of those! There are still stickers in my socks after three washings from an outing a couple weeks ago...more keep working thier way to the surface of the fabric, the things are full of them. Plus it sounds like these things would help reduce problems like stining nettles and scratches. I mean, I hate having to wear long pants, especially for only a short part of the hike. Besides, I rarely wear long pants once the average daytime temperature is above 60, I much prefer shorts.

The Fungus among us.....sadly the only thing they really can do, and must, is get rid of the infected trees, if they don't it will only continue to spread, and they will lose even more trees. It may be ugly for a while, but hey, the other option is to end up with a huge area of uglieness, caused by dead trees all over the place. Frankly I am willing to bet the safety issue is actually a secondary issue, rather than a primary issue, but one folks can better relate to, most folks probably don't understand why you'd have to clear cut an area to save an area.

I prefer the 30 cal size (7.62x54 NATO...also known as .308) But I also have some larger sizes, including some large plastic ammo cans that originally contianed 25mm shells...still water proof and all, and open on both ends.

You want the coolest PDA around....check out the Sony Clie NR70, uses the palm o.s., plays MP3's, videos, big screen, highest resolution and sweet color. So far as a GPS goes, don't get a modual of any sort, get a real stand alone GPS. I like the little etrex's compact, shock and water resistant. Good gadgets. You can link one up to your palm device if you like.

Yeah, no way I'm paying a monthly fee for a program like Geocache Navigator. It's truly a service for people with more money than brains. I'd pay for a program like that, maybe $20 tops. But a monthly fee? No way.
