  1. & yes, it's a city with a freeway.. But I live in the mountains & while it is truly beautiful here, I miss the sky..and I've visited NYC twice, (hopefully will again) there's good memories for me there. So, I like it
  2. For you, I'll post a photo from one of my caches. View is of the helix and The City. Cache is in a playground in Weehawken, NJ. About the only place that you get this view. Worth the visit? It'd be worth the visit for a quarter of that view!
  3. Any chance you could find a better chain? I once saw the awesome job WriteShopRobert did attaching tags to a toy car. He used "Nylon Coated Steel Leader Wire" from a fishing store, crimped. It looks extremely secure. In this case, it looks like the little tag on the gecko would break first. An alternative would be to use stainless steel aviation-type wire with aluminum ferrules. Agree, the chain is weak. In general this trackable doesn't seem to be designed for long life in the field. We didn't upgrade the chain because after all, it is attached to a piece of plastic... We were just hoping to add something that would allow more people to realize that the tiny thing was in fact a trackable! That's true. Doesn't it seem like even if it didn't break that the tracking code would get worn off? I've seen a couple travel bug tags that you had to look at with enough light because it was well worn... I wonder how long these will take to wear away.
  4. We like the idea of being able to find out what the next people in line are like, so we can surprise them with a coin that they may really be fond of.. Very nice concept.
  5. Thanks for the idea. This is our first travel bug we're sending out, so this was very helpful. Here's ours if you are interested: TB4735Y Although we have no picture up, & haven't taken it anywhere, because we haven't picked anything to attach it to yet.. But we had fun with the first steps! It may make you smile.
  6. What are ya'll attaching them to? (Ideas?)
  7. Not at all. The few caches I've done in New York City, and Philadelphia are some of the best caches I have ever done. Many of my caches are placed to bring you to an interesting place (usually great views). This also attracts a large number of muggles. ("DNF. Tried waiting out the wedding parties having their pictures taken.") My opinion is that bringing you to these great places is why they are a great places for a geocache. Yes. They do, on occasion get muggled, and need to be replaced. But most finders thank me for the view. (Is this the place to put a picture of NYC taken from the top of the Palisades in Weehawken?) I completely agree. Some are just put out because they can be & they're another cache to find (& I'm fine with that) but there are those out there that seem like they will be mundane & have muggles everywhere but you happily find that you were wrong. The other night while we were caching we went to yet..another..lamp post but when I turned around to get back in the car there was a sliver of city lights visible through the trees down the valley. Beautiful! & completely caught me off guard. I love those!
  8. Then you obviously never heard of the Kentucky Soccer Mom's "I did the deed here in high school" series. I just laughed so hard I had tears! Hilarious!
  9. Well, if I don't have the one that I originally requested by the time the next batch is offered, I'm going to put in another request. Thank you. I'll do the same, then. Got mine today. How awesome! I'm going to check the mailbox here in a little while *fingers crossed*
  10. Well, if I don't have the one that I originally requested by the time the next batch is offered, I'm going to put in another request. Thank you. I'll do the same, then.
  11. *sigh* there's always one... "FREEBIRD!"
  12. Thanks for editing, I should have been a bit nicer but the combination of beer and just coming off the Vancouver Canucks board set me up for being a bit of a, I'll let you fill in the blanks. (PS: this is an apology) Neil Armstrong had so much help getting to the moon but he is known as the first man on the moon and even though Aldrin was there with him he is not co first man on the moon. As far as the definition of first to find goes there can only be one, in your case it would be you, thems the breaks for the other guys. My son comes with me sometimes and although he doesn't have an account and doesn't sign the log book if he was the one that found a new cache before me I would not claim an FTF. I realize anyone can claim anything they want and that's fine, just to me FTF is pretty black and white with no room for interpretation and coFTF is an oxymoron. I can imagine you tripping your own son as you race to be FTF. Seriously.
  13. I am too late for the cointest, but that's ok. a. I am 1/4 of the RhinoInAToga team. My name is Nichole. There is also my husband, Jeff, My stepson, Michael, & my nine month old daughter, Fallon. We started geocaching in April '11, the day after my birthday, when my husband's niece & nephew encouraged us to join in the game. They thought we would enjoy it, & they were absolutely right! . If you see our user name in the forums, it will most likely be me as I am more of a "computer bug" (as Jeff says) than my husband. b. I am a stay at home mother. I have varied interests, from hiking, fishing & kayaking to reading, scrapbooking, & jewelry making. (Of course geocaching is the family obsession) I am never without my daughter. c.I have been reading a lot about coins & bugs & rules & guidelines on these forums. We are planning to attend the 2011 Geocoinfest. However, being a four person family, we have a tight budget. So I suppose the best question for me to ask right now, is how much money should one save up if they would like to start a small collection of their own, starting with the geocoinfest? Never having been to an event like this, I don't know how expensive they are. Looking at the websites that sell them, there's a wide range of prices. So just an estimate for a decent start to a small collection would be great. Thanks for the opportunity to introduce ourselves in a unique way, even if some..er..one?..of us were/was late!
  14. I don't know if I'm too late for the cointest, but the thread is fun, so thank you for it anyways. Light side: My 13 year old stepson was caching with us one night. It was about 1 a.m. & we were downtown. He has earned his way into having a "turn" to find caches on his own. (We take turns because it works better for us, having a nine month old that stays in the car asleep. Also the reason we mainly cache at night) So, this is one of the first caches he's allowed to go for alone, while we watch from the car. Well, he goes to stick his head underneath a dumpster looking for this container (I later explained to him that these are moved at least once a week & therefore wouldn't hold a cache) Once he has his head good & wedged underneath there, a law enforcement officer sneaks up behind him. We do nothing, but smile, because we want to see how he handles this. The officer says in what must have been his deepest voice possible, "Son, what are you doing?" You should have seen him jump! I was afraid he was going to rack his head on that dirty dumpster! He stammered out, "I-I-I'm geocaching! M-M-My dad can explain it better! *throws pleading look at his dad*" Ha Ha! Turns out most of the LEO's downtown not only know about geocaching, a few participate. So the LEO laughs & says, "Did you find the one at the police department?" My stepson refused to look for that particular cache by himself anymore & I helped him find it. The LEO kept an eye out for us the rest of the night, & he must have told the caching LEO about us because we met him the very next night. He's been a pleasure to run into whenever we're out since!
  15. So if you already requested one when the newsletter came out, you just have to wait & see? Or do you need to ask for one again? I think I remember seeing something about requesting only one per user name... Not saying that the previous poster should not have received 2. That's just lucky, I don't hold it against them. Just asking if I need to request again.
  16. a chuckle. And maybe some extra geostripes. I was just reassuring the original poster that I was just playing. They can play the game however they wish & it might even give them some advantages in the long run. My previous remark was all in fun.
  17. Actually, all jokes aside, we wouldn't mind taking you with us sometime (if you lived near us). The urban caches, with its cleverly placed & camo'd nanos & micros (when they are well thought out), have proven to be more difficult for us than the others. So someone with a practiced urban eye on your team is not a bad thing. We would have to give you some he*@ for it though
  18. You might even be one of the lucky that aren't allergic to poison ivy or poison oak. You don't know until you touch it. There might be a bug on it, though. O_o
  19. "Sir: what are you doing to that lamp post?" Ha! Yes! When I was a muggle I would have noticed someone climbing one! & how about that awful ear-splitting screech they can make if you don't lift the skirt just right? ...that didn't sound right...
  20. I was going to avoid this topic because it just seems belligerent, but another poster described Co-FTF's in such a good way, it's worth repeating. Co-FTF'rs are the other people in the GZ zone that are looking for the cache at the same time as the FTF. Therefore, they are eliminating zones which do not contain the cache. Thus making it possible for the FTF to be the FTF. I thought that was a very good explanation. They worded it better, of course. Also, there are groups of geocachers that often, if not always, hunt together. Husbands & wives. Mothers/Fathers & children who may also be old enough to have their own user name. Uncles/Aunts & Nieces & Nephews... As you can see, there are valid reasons why there could be a Co-FTF. As the CO, you can choose whether or not you wish to honor Co-FTF's, second-to-finds, or even honor FTF at all. I would not personally get all high-&-mighty about it on my cache page, as those are the types of caches we tend to ignore & never seek. But a short sentence or two (nicely put) about how you wish to only honor one FTF is no big deal. Also, if you're going to get angry about someone being Co-FTF on a cache which you yourself wished to be FTF, your goose is cooked. That is totally & completely up to the CO, & the CO alone. It's best to learn how to be a good sport in advance.
  21. Abba! Haha! I have to question all of your choices now!
