  1. I'd agree with this. A good coin is a nice item to find.
  2. Depends on your stamina I suppose. If you try it within a 16 hour stretch, you'd have to average 1 cache every 8 1/2 minutes or so. I'd say you near a power trail for that. Some people split up, I know, but personally, I don't care much for that.
  3. This seems less like helping new people, and more about pushing specific agenda points, but here's my answers. 1. Yes, ranging from once a month to once every two months, depending on how busy I am. 2. Yes I expect them to sign. No, I don't verify unless I have a specific reason to do so. 3. Yes 4. N/A, mine are pretty easy to find. 5. Only my own. I'll only take something out of another's cache if I find it to be dangerous or inappropriate. 6. No 7. N/A, haven't done this. My understanding is archived caches are not considered when approving a new one. 8. YES, big believer in this, particularly in parks. 9. Not so far. 10. I don't really worry about anyone's stats other than my own. 11. I use google maps with distance calculations, taking into account multi and puzzle. 12. In some cases, lack of knowledge about what it is, in some cases theft of the bug. My feeling is the two step process isn't a big deal, but that's just me. 13. Rarely, in my experience. 14. Only sent one, didn't do it. I don't think sending a copy of a bug is accepted, no. 15. Not really. 16. Nope, seems clear to me. 17. No clue here. 18. Again, no opinion. 19. No. 20. No data to determine this, you'd have to have statistics on abandoned caches. Anything without that is guessing.
  4. No, you may not dig to hide a cache, no exceptions to that rule based on permission, private property, or any other factor to my knowledge. Sorry.
  5. Does the cache have any Groundspeak or geocaching.com indication at all? It may be a cache for another website. Also, it may have been submitted and rejected, and the cache owner simply never picked it up. Seems like a fishy drop without permission.
  6. In some areas, if you do a hide in the woods, there's a good chance of poison ivy/oak. People like hides in the woods, do they include the warning.
  7. Actually, the worst thing that can happen is geocaching as a hobby gets a bad rep with your local officials. This can have negative impacts on a lot of people. The Virginia ban on geocaches on VDoT property, which is enforced, was created by a feud between two geocachers. My advice, if you're in doubt as to whether it's allowed or not, and you think asking is a bad idea, then you're right to move on to another location. Just my two cents.
  8. Could always lay false trails all over the area! And be sure to put piles of sticks on the false trails. :-)
  9. Check this page: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/default.aspx and look for the downloadable cache note. That's what I laminate and use.
  10. I wouldn't suggest using the site at all. After all, these are temporary, private caches. Just place your hides, record the gps coordinates, and have it as a handout. I don't believe they'll approve caches like that here.
  11. In similar threads, I've seen links to a cache that's a building you walk into. Not sure if there's one bigger than that.
  12. Keep in mind on thumbs down measurements, many people who are opposed to the basic idea of challenges are simply thumbs downing everything in the area. To make the comparison more valid, you should compare to the number of geocaches created during the same period for an area, recognizing that this is a sideline to the primary purpose, so one would expect it to be at a much lower level. I neither like nor dislike challenges, so I'd say I'm relatively unbiased.
  13. Don't know of anything downloadable, sorry. Most places around me where you might be towed for parking, a window sticker or sign wouldn't make any difference, they'd tow you anyway.
  14. That's not generally encouraged, as ir can attract animals, who migh damage the cache. I've left dog toys before, just use unscented ones, not food items.
  15. I doubt the reviewer is throwing up objections for some nefarious reason, and as stated, we can't really evaluate why unless you share the specifics. I'm a new cacher with four hides, I've never run into a condescending attitude from reviewers or here on the forum. Judging from your reply, your issue may stem more from attitude than low cache count.
  16. I'd only record it if I dropped a trackable, something like that, and I'd record as something other than found.
  17. So the assumption is the margin of error is fixed (relatively) for the day?
  18. That seems good to me, but I don't really track it. I do enough number crunching on the job, geocaching is an escape from that.
  19. Looking at the caches, I'd agree, you need more attempts with dnf's. On the climbing one, no one has yet said they actually climbed looking for it. Perhaps they have, but it helps the reviewer if it's all recorded. So far, that has one comment indicating the cacher looked, but didn't want to climb, and comments about contacting the CO.
  20. I've seen a couple of people post on the forums that they hide caches under a different name than they find caches. Also, quite a few people don't register finds online, so I don't believe a minimum number of finds will work. As for the 000's, statistically that's no more unusual than any other specific number. I'd say let those be archived, and I'm sure your local reviewer will be more cautious about posting any from that particular cacher in the future.
  21. Depends on the reviewer, I suppose, but probably not. However, Groundspeak has said that precedents are NOT used when approving a cache, so giving those really won't help.
  22. If the hole was dug by anyone with the purpose of hiding the cache, no. If the hole was dug to put in a new drainage pipe, and as soon as it's in, you hide a cache there, I'd assume that's ok.
  23. So far, I've never taken anything from a cache, although I try to leave something fairly often. I try to stay stocked up on items from the dollar store or target that are either useful or fun, and the caches I own, I try to keep stocked with decent quality items. But for the most part, the items I've found are junk, which I just remove from the caches I own. Not sure why people do it, putting decent quality swag in caches still makes the just about the cheapest hobby I've ever had. But I don't worry too much about it, I just make sure I'm happy with what I'm dropping in.
